Why do you think that? I think it's surprising, but a great choice.

I love this song and I think it is a bold choice by Carrie. It is a big shock, sure.. but it is a beautiful song, and it shows the world that Carrie CAN sing traditional country if she chooses to.
It is risky because some of her own fans are unhappy by the choice... but I think once you wrap your head around the idea, you will see that this is actually a GREAT decision by her team.
Carrie needs to continue to show diversity in her song choices as she has done so far, or she will be labeled a belter like Martina, etc. It is good to show that she can sing a soft, pretty song like this, as it shows the prettiest side to her voice. I think it is a good call for a Winter song. I would hate this for the summer, but it is great for this time of year.
I admit I was like most of you, hoping for a fast paced song next like FOTF or GOOTT. But, maybe they are saving a fast paced song for the summer, as the last song off CR before the new single drops for Album 3. Maybe they wanted a slower song for the winter.
I Told You So: should peak by April or so. Single 6:? could be FOTF or GOOTT, released by May, peaks by August.
Lead Single from Album 3: Drops in August, poised to peak when Album 3 comes out in late Fall.
That scenerio would be perfect, IMO. We would all get our fast paced song for the summer, so everyone wins.

i would bet Carrie would still release another song after this. its only been a year since her last album. hopefully GOOTT or FOTF will be the 6th single.

^ I think so too.. because if I Told You So peaks by April, that is a HUGE gap before her new single would drop from Album 3.
You have to have a hot song on the radio in the summer, in my opinion. So it will either be Single 6 from CR to close the album with a fast paced song, or, the new single from Album 3 might come earlier then we expect.
Either way, this song is just a winter song to kill time until a hot summer song will be released. Her label is not stupid.

This has been confirmed as Carrie's newest single in tonight's edition of Country Aircheck.
It goes for adds on February 2nd, by which time it will undoubtedly be in the top twenty.

I hope you guys are right about there being a 6th single as I think there are definitely a few potential summer hits left on this album!
Plus I don't see them finishing up album 3 that early...

exactly... Carrie hasn't even started writing the album yet. I can't imagine they would be done in time for a release until late October, early november, like she has done every time.
I just think her team knows you need an upbeat single for the summer. So it will either be FOTF/GOOTT, or, an upbeat single to lead off the new album.
ITYS is perfect for the winter though.

i love this choice. not my fave song of the album but it greatly defines where carrie wants her career headed.
but carrie fans better brace themselves. if this doesnt hit #1, there will be tons of talk of how carrie's career is on the decline.

If "Stay"can become a critics favorite, why not ITYS. I'll give Carrie the benefit of the doubt releasing this song. It is a risk(or not), but what the hell, go for it.

I am not one to be stuck on the numbers. I just like the music I like and enjoy following a few of the artists who make that music. But I would really like to see this song go to #1, not because of the streak but simply because of the #1 party. I think it would have the potential of some great pictures of Carrie Underwood and Randy Travis, since he is the writer. And the press could be fun to watch, and I just really like the song.

Well that even happens when her songs reach #1..lol I'm really excited about this release and I don't care if it doesn't get to #1. I just can't wait to hear this beautiful song on the radio! Also, I think it will bring in a whole different set of people and maybe, if the song does well, get more traditional music back on country radio.

If that were true, Taylor Swift's career would really have been on the decline after missing #1 three times...

I think her fans will know she is not on the decline if this song misses number 1... but the critics and naysayers will be out in full force like bloodhounds, waiting for this day for so long... the day Carrie misses number 1. lol
Thing is, it could definetly get to number 1... so I am not worried. :)
It is a beautiful song and whatever happens, it was worth the risk.
The more I listen to it, the more I love it.

I think people are worrying too much lol. The critics are not going to bash Carrie for not going #1...its not like they all cant wait for a song not to hit the top spot...thats absurd

Maybe I just feel it was a horrible single choice because I find there are songs on Carnival Ride that need to be released (Flat On The Floor, Get Out Of This Town, You Won't Find This). I have always found this song boring, even the original.

I just don't get what any of this matters. Of course you want a song to be commercially successful, as it's financially better for the artist and it makes it easier for you to hear the song. But whether it's #1, #2, #3 — what difference in the world does that really make? For example, most people I know consider LP&TWCT to be some of Keith Urban's best work, yet none of the singles from that album made the top. As a fan of Keith, I could honestly care less. It's great music, and that's what matters. As someone already said, 99% of fans don't even follow the charts. If you're talking about missing the top 20 or something drastic, then that's a big deal, because that has obvious ramifications for future work. But as long as it's popular, and considering it's Carrie it will be, why does the final number matter? It's about the music, and for me, this is a great song and I love the statement it makes. If you don't like the style of the song, that's perfectly fine. But imo, any dissent over ITYS should start with that, not over whether it will make it to #1 or merely be top 5. Someone mentioned Stay in this thread... I think Stay is, by far, the most influential and important country song of the last few years. It didn't even spend a week at the top of the Billboard chart.

I don't understand why everybody thinks this is going to miss #1. As hot as Carrie's career is right now, I don't think this should have any trouble making it to #1. In fact, I think it will follow the current trend and spend 2 weeks at #1, equaling the run that Randy had with the song in '88.

If this reaches #1 then Country radio REALLY REALLY loves Carrie. Or maybe it would mean country radio REALLY REALLY loves country music. (I know, what a concept!) Seriously, there's an enormous group of country fans out there that I don't think some of you are even aware of.

Some of the people posting may not like it because it isn't POP country but more Traditional Country music. Personally I love how Carrie covers this song and I love how Carrie makes the decisions and wants to show that she is a true country artist not like some other country singers now.

Someone mentioned Stay in this thread... I think Stay is, by far, the most influential and important country song of the last few years. It didn't even spend a week at the top of the Billboard chart. i know it shouldnt matter. heck, it doesnt matter to me. i'm a carrie fan, and ive been pulling for the live version of ikyw, because its amazing, carrie sings it beautifully and i believe up to this day, its her best interpretive performance yet. and while its my fave, i can also recognize why its not a sure-fire #1 like all her other singles were - repetitive, too slow, boring, etc. but i wanted her to release that song not because of her #1 streak, but because i want more people to hear this amazing carrie song performance, because as a single, it has the potential to be performed/promoted on shows, get more radio airplay etc. i honestly couldnt care less if it hits #1. carrie has proved her radio hits mettle. what's another #1 that its gonna significantly achieve? it just adds to the numbers. same thing i feel about itys. when i heard it was a single, its an affirmation that carrie really wants to be known as a country music singer, show her appreciation to older generation country artists, that she couldnt care less about its total lack of crossover appeal and lack of help it will do to her album sales. of course she'd prob be happy if it reaches #1, but thats probably just the icing of the cake and not the be-all and end-all of the song's purpose. i just put it out there what might happen on the possibility that it doesnt reach #1. because thats how some people are going to see it, regardless of whether they have the correct perception or not. every carrie single that reaches #1 gets a lot of press because she has that streak going on. and really, some people are on a chartwatch to see when it will end. just as her streak gets press as long as it continues, it will also get press when her streak ends. and im just putting it out there that that's how some people will see it - shes on the decline, because to some, chart success is the only indicator of success. just like how to some, album sales are the only indicator of success. its just like when the yankees' consecutive playoff appearances stopped this past year. it got a lot of press, because it seems to be the end of a "tradition" and some people thought that might be a sign that the yankees are on the decline, after being a powerhouse for so many years....

Carrie Underwood Nervous About People's Choice By Amy Elisa Keith
Originally posted Wednesday January 07, 2009 04:30 PM EST Photo by: REUTERS / Steve Marcus / Landov
She survived Simon Cowell and American Idol three years ago. She's proved her staying power with two hit albums. Yet being up against Rihanna and Taylor Swift at Wednesday's People's Choice Awards is giving Carrie Underwood the shakes.
"They're both so big, and there's great competition. I'm nervous and so excited at the same time," she tells PEOPLE of being up for favorite female singer and favorite country song.
Underwood, 25, is also hitting the stage to perform her ballad, "I Know You Won't," complete with a full orchestra. "It's a really emotional song about a guy who just wont call. We've all had that happen, right?"
Living up to her fashionista image, the country singer will be donning three different brightly colored gowns at Wednesday's show, to air live on CBS at 9 p.m. ET. "When I was trying things on the neon colors made me happy," she says of her dresses by George Chakra, Zuhair Murad, and Naeem Kahn.
In a special collaboration to mark both PEOPLE Magazine and the People's Choice Awards' 35th birthdays, a special award will be given to the Favorite Star Under 35.
But win or lose, it's all about the fans. "It means so much that the fans are still supporting me and that I had fans before I even had a career," says Underwood. "They've been there with me the whole time."

This is the perfect opportunity for Carrie to sing IKYW, I KNOW it will be amazing. I've seen her sing this in concert and live, it's just breathtaking!
