Pop Singer-Songwriter Kim Petras Signs With Republic Records

Republic Records has signed singer-songwriter Kim Petras, who will drop a new single tonight called “Future Starts Now.” The track is the first single from her upcoming debut album and the first release from her newly inked partnership with the label.

Petras comments on the new single, “I felt so anxious at the start of lockdown, because for me the most anxiety-inducing thing is not being able to work and do what I love. ‘Future Starts Now’ came from trying to stay present, instead of stressing about the future and all the lost time.” Petras recently teased the new track with a debut performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Of the signing, Wendy Goldstein, Republic Records’ president of west coast creative, tells Variety: “What Kim Petras has already accomplished on her own is unprecedented. She became one of the most disruptive and dynamic global superstars with incredible songs and an amazing vision. Our goal is to augment what she’s personally built and make history now.”

According to the announcement, Petras coped with lockdown by focusing on writing an album that captures all the excitement of Paris, a place where she has always found happiness.

Shortly after moving to Los Angeles at the age of 20, Petras released her first single, 2017’s “I Don’t Want It At All,” and her first Top 40 hit, “Heart to Break.” After a string of singles including “Feeling of Falling” (with Cheat Codes) and “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up” (featuring Sophie), Petras released the project “Clarity.” Its lead single “Icy” landed her on “Good Morning America” and Petras was selected by Ariana Grande to appear on the “Charlie’s Angels” soundtrack. Concurrently, she dropped her Halloween-themed full-length project “Turn Off the Light,” which includes standout tracks “There Will Be Blood” and “Close Your Eyes.”

Of “Clarity,” Variety wrote in 2019: “’Clarity’ pushes sturdy pop songcraft as successfully as any pop release you’re likely to hear this year. It rivals the giant leap for womankind that Lorde took from her 2013 debut EP ‘The Love Club’ to her full-length debut ‘Pure Heroine’ some six months later.”

I am ready for you to call me a prude but this definitely isn’t the sound or content I want from her and the explicitness turned me off, not on. It just seems like cheap production and songwriting?

I also felt like she did a much better job with this sound on the Halloween album / Charli XCX (superpower bitch !!) has done it better.

I’d like something closer to Got My Number, Icy, Hillside Boys.

I have respect for her but this isn’t it. Treat me like a slut is a bop though, and the tweaking power bottom I used to be in my early 20s was indeed enjoying it.

Also, coconuts and hit it from the back should have been tacked on here. They fit and I don’t want them to be on her next album.

This EP legit made me LOL. Probably nothing I'll ever return to for repeat listens, but it is catchy.

Question, though... why is she still working with Dr. Luke if she's on Atlantic now?

She chooses to work with Dr. Luke. It's always been voluntary which is why it keeps being a hot topic with her. She signed to Republic through his imprint Amigo Records last year. And she goes through his publishing company as well. So they'll probably continue working together for awhile.

The EP is causing some controversy in different circles around the internet. I see people call it "pandering to the lowest common denominator gay" and are criticizing an EP about sexually exploiting women being produced by Dr. Luke.

These... are hot takes... but also I do see the points being made. Personally, I'm not turned off by any of that, but what I am turned off by are the songs in general. I don't care about sexually explicit material ("WAP" was one of the most successful songs on my personal chart in 2021/2022), but the songs really do come off as try hard and generic. I want more like "Future Starts Now," "Do It," "Icy," "Personal Hell," "Malibu," etc. from her. Not this. But I'm also aware that this is clearly a small side project and is no indicator of where she's heading in her career, so I'm content for now still bopping to "Future Starts Now" on my current playlist.

Apparently there’s some trouble with the label.. basically an entire scrapped album has leaked in recent days & Kim tweeted (then deleted) something yesterday along the lines of not caring if people listen to the leaks because she’s not being allowed to put out music anyway 😬

I always believed her fanbase was strong enough to carry an album anyways but her label doesn't seem to think so considering the performance of the singles and the EP

I just gave the leaked/scrapped album a spin. It's a perfectly solid pop album, what the hell happened there? I can't see any reason they wouldn't release that as is.
