Jennifer Lopez Shares a Special Tribute to Selena Quintanilla 23 Years After Playing the Late Icon
News you'll want to do the washing machine to!
Believe it or not, but this Saturday marks the 23rd anniversary of the beloved film, Selena. As many know, Jennifer Lopez portrayed the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.
In honor of the movie and the legendary singer, J.Lo shared a touching tribute on social media. Making the homage even more significant? March 31 marks the 25th year of Selena's tragic and untimely passing.
"Join me today in #CelebratingSelena," Lopez captioned her social media posts, alongside a 3-minute video that honored the La Reina de Tejano. "I can't believe it's been 23 years since this incredible movie came out and 25 years since her passing."
J.Lo added, "Selena was such an inspiration to me and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her. As an artist, this movie truly was an experience I'm going to remember for the rest of my life. Please share your memories of Selena and the movie with me below."
In the 3-minute video, Lopez shared throwback interviews of her honoring Selena and clips from the film.
"I just go right back to the beginning of the movie and the first day of shooting, and really trying to find the essence of who she was," Jennifer said in the video clip. "She was an artist and she was singing by the time she was 9 years old or younger."
She explained that a lot of "studying" went into her role of portraying the Texas native. "Learning how she sang, all her mannerisms, how she danced... that became really important," Lopez expressed.
For the Hustlers actress, this movie forever changed her life.
"God sent me that role for a reason," Lopez can be heard saying in a separate interview. "So I could always have her as an inspiration."
Last April, Jennifer opened up about playing the late Mexican American singer and how she prepared for the movie.
"It was a beautiful time in my life and it taught me so much about life," the World of Dance judge said on Apple Music's Beats 1 show. "I was young, I was 26 when I played Selena... I didn't realize, at the time, the responsibility that I had, all I wanted to do was do her memory and that moment justice."
With everything going happening with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, J.Lo's special tribute to Selena has people feeling muy excited. You can watch the video above!

Selena Quintanilla's Second M.A.C Cosmetics Collection Is Dropping This Month
Sequels are rarely better than the original, but the highly-anticipated M.A.C Cosmetics x Selena Quintanilla collection would like to have a word. Returning for round two in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the late Tejano singer's tragic death, the new M.A.C x Selena La Reina collection is bigger and better. The latest collection is inspired by the singer's instantly-recognizable image—yes, including the studded bra.
Everything you need to re-create Selena Quintanilla's fresh-faced look is part of this collection. The Tejano icon's makeup look was never complete without a red lip, so M.A.C gave fans a metallic red matte lipstick named Queen of Cumbia as well as three other lipsticks—brown, pink-nude, and peach. For Quintanilla's sunkissed glow, the collection features a rich-gold Skinfinish powder.
While the inaugural collection featured eyeshadow pots, the highlight of the new collection is the eight-pot eyeshadow palette with colors that "range from warm nudes that compliment every skin tone, to some rich-toned earthy browns," explains Gisel Calvillo, the senior national artist at M.A.C Cosmetics. One of the eyeshadow names even nods the iconic line from the Selena movie, in which Jennifer Lopez (who played the late-singer), told the crowd, "Me siento muy...excited."
What's even more special about the second collection is the packaging, which comes in a glossy black case with rhinestones fashioned into the silhouette of the singer's signature studded bra. "This collection is so special to me because it celebrates Selena’s 25-year legacy, and I wanted the packaging to be fun and memorable. The true inspiration behind the packaging is Selena’s iconic rhinestone bra and really led to the holographic feel for the rest of the collection, so it pulled everything together,” Suzette Quintanilla explained in a statement.
M.A.C Cosmetic's Selena Quintanilla collectors vault has already sold out. However, you can still pre-order the collection online, or wait until it all goes live on April 21 on maccosmetics.com and select retailers on April 23.

Trump supporters gather at Selena Quintanilla statue despite family's cease and desist letter
photo gallery:
With her red Trump-themed mask, Mary Delany smiled for the camera as she posed in front of the Selena Memorial statue in downtown Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday.
Delany, a Portland native, was decorated head to toe in red "Keep America Great" gear and was joined by her two service dogs — Rocky and Maggie. Both dogs were decorated with a giant red, white and blue mum.
"We really wanted to support Trump and we think he's the only one who needs to be in power to restore our government and restore peace to our nation," Delany said.
Delaney was one of 50 Trump supporters who gathered at the Queen of Cumbia's statue to show their support for President Donald Trump.
Selena Quintanilla's family takes legal action after Texas man plans Trump event at her statue Some attendees were decorated in "Make America Great Again" gear, donned U.S. flags, carried rifles on their backs and carried signs that said: "the silent majority stands with Trump," "Make America Great Again" and "No mas democrata somos republicanos," which translates from Spanish to English to "No more Democrats. We are Republicans."
The life-size bronze statue, which was unveiled in 1997, was created to immortalize the Corpus Christi-reared cumbia siren who was on the cusp of international stardom when she was shot and killed in 1995 by her fan club manager.
Every year, more than 30,000 people come from around the world to visit the memorial, according to the Visit Corpus Christi website. "The Selena statue is a symbol of the Hispanic community. I wanted to deliver a message that minorities who support Trump are not alone," said organizer Joe Michael Perez.
Perez, who is running for mayor of Corpus Christi in November, is known for putting a MAGA hat on the city's Selena statue in a viral social media post.
On July 7, the Quintanilla family sent Perez a cease and desist letter asking him to not host his political event at the statue since he would be allegedly using Selena's image for profit.
If he did not comply with the order, he would face legal action from the singer's family.
The Caller-Times, part of the USA TODAY Network, obtained a copy of the letter from Singh, Singh & Trauben, LLP, a law firm from Beverly Hills, California that represents Q Productions, Inc., Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., and the estate of Selena Quintanilla. "Without obtaining Quintanilla’s permission, you have unilaterally associated Selena’s brand and identity with Donald J. Trump, whose public statements, ideology, and political re-election campaign are neither endorsed by nor affiliated with Quintanilla in any manner," the letter states.
"This is a message. I'm not making money off of this. I refused to cancel this event because it was important to stand together as a unit to say Hispanics are here for Trump," Perez said. "I don't think they (the Quintanilla family) have a case. This is public property and we are here to exercise our right to freedom of speech."
As coronavirus cases continue to skyrocket in Corpus Christi's surrounding Nueces County, Perez said he was not worried about putting attendees at risk. "This event is outdoors and everyone here is aware of social distancing and some are wearing their face masks, but at the end of the day it's their body and their choice," Perez said.
Delany said she wasn't afraid to attend the Trump rally because she was taking the steps to keep her and her husband safe.
"I have my mask on and I am keeping my distance while I'm here showing my support for Trump. The only person I'm close to is my husband. So, I'm not worried," she said. While many attended the event to show their support for Trump, more than a dozen counter protesters wearing face masks and another 30 conducted a drive-thru protest against the rally in front of the Selena statue.
Some counter protesters in their cars honked and carried signs that said: "Leave Selena alone," "Selena = love, Trump = hate. The 2 do not equate," "Show some respect," and "What side of history are you on?" The two gatherings incited expletives, obscene hand gestures, and some confrontations from both Trump attendees and counter protesters. No one was physically hurt or injured at the event.
Wind Stalker, a Native American member of Coastal Community Defense, said he and several other counter protesters attended the event to practice their right to freedom of speech.
"We are here to oppose the rally just like they are here to support it. It's our right to free speech," Wind Stalker said. "The only reason we are armed is because they are armed too, and if somebody were to attack us, we want to be able to defend ourselves. But we are here to keep the peace and let others exercise their first amendment right." So disgusting, disrespectful, and foul..take that sh*t elsewhere..

Karol G, Natti Natasha, Ally Brooke and More Honor Selena Quintanilla at Premios Juventud 2020
Selena Quintanilla's legacy lives on. The iconic singer was honored at Premios Juventud 2020 on Thursday night, with stars like Karol G, Natti Natasha, Ally Brooke and more paying tribute in a heartwarming segment. The special segment, which also included Danna Paola and Greeicy Rendon, was produced by Abraham Quintanilla Jr. It began with a heartfelt introduction from Karol. "She changed the world with music, with an immense talent and with her undeniable identity as a Latina. She became a star that dazzled her fans, that constantly inspires and that always shines," Karol said. "She is our queen, the one and only Selena."
Then came a video of Quintanilla singing "Como la Flor," before Danna emerged on stage, belting it out in a white ensemble. Then, Natti shook it across the stage with a team of dancers to "La Carcacha," and Ally got her chance to pay tribute to her idol with "Amor Prohibido." Greeicy was next with "Baila Esta Cumbia," before Danna, Natti and Ally joined her, concluding the segment together with "Fotos y Recuerdos." Karol appeared again at the end to invite Quintanilla's brother, Abraham, up on the stage to accept two awards. Abraham dedicated the trophies to his and Quintanilla's parents and thanked the world for keeping her memory alive.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Quintanilla's death. The "Dreaming of You" singer tragically died in March 1995. While she was just 23 years old, her impact on music, fashion, culture and future generations was immeasurable. "I fell in love with Selena when I was 11 years old after watching her movie," Karol G said in a 2018 interview with ET. " she was always working with her father, because the same happened to me. My father was always with me, all the time. I started researching about her story, and todas las cosas que ella hizo [all the things she did].”
"I want to be a legend like her," added the singer, who has Quintanilla's face tattooed on her arm. "Not a person that passes and people forget about. I think she is, she still has number ones on Billboard and she’s still being nominated for awards and it’s been over 20 years since her death. She’s a legend and that’s what I want. Entonces ella de verdad es mi mayor inspiración [she’s truly my biggest inspiration]."
The following year, Brooke gushed to ET over her love for Quintanilla. “There's this joy that you feel when you listen to Selena," she said. "Her music is so timeless. I was actually listening to her music [recently]. It's amazing that you can listen to it now, 10 years from now, 50 years from now and it still feels so fresh and new. Her spirit shines through the records.”
"No Me Queda Más [can] instantly bring me to tears," she continued. "The passion in her voice and the pain she exudes through her emotions, it really touches your soul. That's one of my favorite records because that reminds me of home, San Antonio, being with my family and hearing the mariachis along the River Walk."
"She just had this exuberance," Brooke added of Quintanilla, who she said is one of her biggest role models. "I think if more humans were like Selena we would live in a completely different -- just perfect world.”
"She was the first Spanglish girl that I heard," Natti Natasha told ET. "I feel like she was such an icon and so talented in a raw way, and that's the way to go. She had a message to give and she projected that so well and she had a lot of trust in herself that’s what we need in this industry to keep on going. For other people to believe in you, you have to believe in [yourself first]. She was an amazing woman."

‘Selena: The Series’ Sets December Release on Netflix in New Trailer
“Selena: The Series,” a biographical drama about the beloved Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, is set to release on Netflix this December.
“The Walking Dead” star Christian Serratos will play the late singer, who was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, just days before her 24th birthday. The Netflix series will depict her childhood and rapid rise to fame, in addition to the difficult choices she and her family must make to further her music career.
Netflix released a teaser trailer for “Selena: The Series” on Tuesday morning, announcing its premiere on the streaming platform on Dec. 4.
The black-and-white teaser shows Selena on stage singing the song “Como La Flor,” with narration from her father Abraham Quintanilla (Ricardo Chavira) playing in the background.
“Do you trust your father? If you keep practicing, it’s all gonna pay off. Just watch,” he says. “And when I see you on that stage, I still the six-year-old girl singing in our backyard.”
“Selena: The Series” is created by Moisés Zamora, who is also an executive producer. Fellow cast members are Madison Taylor Baez as a young Selena, Seidy Lopez as her mother Marcella Quintanilla, Gabriel Chavarria as her brother A.B. Quintanilla and Noemi Gonzalez as her sister Suzette Quintanilla. The rest of the cast includes Julio Macias, Jesse Posey, Hunter Reese Pena, Carlos Alfredo Jr., Paul Rodriguez, Erika Buenfil, David Fernandez Jr. and more.
Selena has been called one of the most famous Mexican American entertainers of all time and is known as the Queen of Tejano music. Her album “Selena Live!” won a Grammy in 1994, and her posthumous album “Dreaming of You” debuted on top of the Billboard 200 chart, making her the first Latin artist to do so. In 1997, Jennifer Lopez played the singer in the biographical drama film “Selena,” her breakout role.
“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” said Suzette Quintanilla when the series was first announced in late 2018. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

So excited!!! Is this supposed to be a one-season series? I mean, will it cover her whole life? Me too, even though I don't have Netflix. It's probably going to be more like a mini series like "The Jacksons: An American Dream".

Selena Quintanilla's Husband Chris Perez Reveals What Ran Through His Head When He First Met the Singer“I’m a shy person by nature, and there was just something about her that she was able to pull me out," he says. www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/amp32713985/selena-quintanilla-husband-chris-perez-marriage/Twenty-five years after her death, Selena Quintanilla continues to live on in the hearts of millions, including her husband, Chris Perez. Like the rest of the world, Chris saw Selena’s rise to stardom, from a local Texas singer-songwriter to a Grammy winner on the cusp of crossover success. And the guitarist will forever be intertwined with her legacy because of their one-of-a-kind love story. In Netflix's upcoming show Selena: The Series, fans of the late Tex-Mex artist will get a closer look at their controversial relationship. As many know from the now-iconic 1997 biopic Selena, Selena and Chris never gave up on their dream of being together. In 1989, the two met when Chris joined Selena y Los Dinos as the band’s new guitarist. Although Selena’s father and manager Abraham Quintanilla had initial reservations about the musician because of his hard rock image, he quickly became an integral part of the group. When asked what he first thought about Selena, Chris had two words. “Beautiful and talented,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “I’m a shy person by nature, and there was just something about her that she was able to pull me out.” Despite their best efforts to maintain a professional relationship, Chris and Selena eventually confessed their feelings for one another in a Pizza Hut. Shortly after in 1990, they began secretly datingas Selena knew her father only wanted her focused on career and family, and she feared that if he found out about their relationship, he would try to put a stop to it. And she was right. Shortly afterwards, Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, told Abraham about Selena and Chris, and he tried to keep Chris away from his daughter. Although Abraham forbid their relationship, the "Queen of Tejano" and the guitarist continued their romance in secret. That is until Abraham finally fired Chris from the band, reportedly calling him “a cancer” to the family. “It kind of hurt his pride and his ego to find out that he was the last to know,” Chris said about Abraham to CNN. “When things got tense and things were said by him, it hurt me that he was saying it, but I didn't let it get to me because I knew deep down, he knew the kind of person I was.” But this decision may have been the last straw for Selena. She believed that the only way her father would accept them being together was if they got married. On April 2, 1992, Selena and Chris eloped. Within hours, media outlets announced their union, making the Quintanilla patriarch furious. “Selena and I decided that the only way to be together...was to run away and get married (at 20 and 22 years old) in secret. What a rollercoaster ride THAT day was,” Chris wrote on Facebook in 2017. Over time, Abraham came to accept their relationship, formally welcoming Chris into the Quintanilla family and making him part of the band again. But that didn't mean all troubles were behind the couple. Selena and Chris may have looked like the picture-perfect duo, however, over the years, the musician has been candid about their ups and downs, even opening up about contemplating divorce. “I think what it boiled down to is that we were young,” he told CNN. “We were married and together 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We had to learn how to handle that and that was both of us. It's not like she brought up the idea and I was fighting it because honestly I was right there with her.” Luckily, Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, shed some light on how different life would be if the two separated, and they decided to stick together. “We ended up patching things up and making a promise that we would never let that happen again,” Chris recalled to the outlet. “We started talking about a family.” But this next milestone never came to be. Days before celebrating their third wedding anniversary, Selena was murdered. On March 31, 1995, the founder and former president of her fan club Yolanda Saldívar shot the singer in the back with a gun. Selena’s death sent shockwaves throughout the world, leaving fans in disbelief. Selena is remembered each year on the anniversary of her death, her wedding anniversary, and her birthday. On these special occasions, Chris joins Selena’s family to celebrate the "Mexican Madonna." “The energy and her presence is felt a lot more that time of year,” he told KSAT this year. “[Her legacy] just keeps getting bigger and bigger and I think it’s an amazing thing and I’m proud to be attached to it in the way that I am.” In 2001, Chris remarried and had two children — a now-21-year-old daughter and a now-15-year-old son. He later divorced his second wife in 2008. And through it all, he hasn’t forgotten about his first love. “I’m proud of her,” he said. “Proud of everything that she’s been able to accomplish.”

Ugh. It's always tough to see footage highlighting her beautiful personality. Loved when she name dropped Andy Garcia and Cachao.
