BOYLE BACK ON TOP?
Yesterday’s Oprah Performance Could See Her Return to #1
January 20, 2010
Susan Boyle and Oprah Winfrey make a tough combination to beat.
The unlikely Syco/Columbia superstar continues her Dream weaving with an appearance on the daytime queen’s talk show yesterday that could well send her 3.3 million-selling album back to #1 after an absence of two weeks.
She’s probably the best bet to do so, with Interscope’s Lady Gaga probably her only competition at this point, though you’ll have to stay tuned as to what that sales total will be when more information comes in from our shell-shocked retail reporters still reeling after learning of Conan O’Brien’s exit.
The week’s biggest debut will be Merge’s Spoon, with their much-acclaimed new album Transference, subject of colleague Bud Scoppa’s Rumor Mill raves, which looks to be in the 45-50k range, the second strong indie debut in a row for WMG distributor ADA.
Another alternative success story, Columbia’s Motion Picture Soundtrack, release their major label debut, My Dinosaur Life, on track for between 28-32k, about the same total as Capitol/EMI’s 2010 Grammy Nominees collection.
Final entry, which could well make the lower portion of the Top 50, is Vagrant’s The Eels with between 7-10k.
The market was down 4% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and now down 4% year to date. And now for the good news…
Spoon 45-50k
Motion City Soundtrack 28-32k
The Eels 7-10k
YOUR WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: Susan Boyle could reclaim the #1 spot on next week's chart, thanks to her appearance on Oprah earlier this week. In a novelty—or a sign of the times—there will likely be two indie bands in the Top five, with Spoon joining Vampire Weekend near the top of the leader board. The wild card for next week's chart will be Hope for Haiti Now, the star-studded digital-only album from this weekend's benefit to support earthquake relief in Haiti. Pre-orders will begin on Friday, with the benefit airing Friday night. Organizers hope to begin delivering the album over the weekend. How fast the album can be delivered and how quickly the pre-orders are redeemed will determine chart position next week. Should this collection hit #1, it will be the first digital-only release to ever reach that pinnacle.

Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 60-65k
