I agree, I don't think Miranda has anything to worry about (yet). Her singles, besides "The House That Built Me", have never really been quick risers anyway. Add in all of the superstar lead singles taking off right now, and it's normal that she's experiencing a slowdown.
As for the song and video, they still really work for me. I still feel that it was her best choice to release at this point, and I can still see it being at least a top 5 hit.

I think a Top Ten hit is pretty much guaranteed for Miranda at this point in her career. Unless the song picks up, though, I can't see it reaching Top 5 at the rate it's moving.

www.theboot.com/2010/08/16/miranda-lambert-only-prettier-lyrics/Here is an interesting new article on the composition of "Only Prettier". I have to say that, as much as I love this song (I'm not even bothered by its production, to be honest, as I feel Lambert was opting for more of a dirty lo-fi sound anyway akin to left-of-mainstream releases), I feel Lambert is making something of an unfortunate blanket statement on skinny people in general. I can understand her motivation in writing an anthem that, in a culture that is obsessively image-centric, makes many whose self-esteem is shattered by false perceptions of being overweight feel empowered.......but I feel she is gravitating too heavily to the opposite end of the pendulum and is leaning too heavily on making the same mistake. Obviously many modeling agencies do promote (even enforce) dangerous dietary restrictions and lifestyle choices on their representatives and clients. That part is undoubtedly true. It's also true that anorexia is a growing problem at the same time the obesity epidemic is. But it is absolutely possible to be both "normal" and "skinny". I fit that profile surely. There's many who are naturally underweight who eat like horses but maintain their figures due to consistent physical activity regimens, dietary choices that are grounded in common sense rather than obsessively counting or focusing on what you CAN'T have, and, above all else, a conscious outlook and attitude toward life daily. I applaud Lambert from one end in the writing and recording of this track, but she's doing us all a disservice by lumping together all skinnier individuals as something other than "normal". What it all boils down to, regardless of your body mass index or figure, is if you're making conscious or unconscious lifestyle choices. And it stands to reason it's those in the former camp, regardless of where you are on the BMI map, that are "prettier" in general. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

^ Thanks for posting that, it was a great read. I think Natalie Hemby has made herself a comfortable spot on an imaginary list of songwriters I love. Both this song and "White Liar" are such great pieces of material.

I'm not so sure that this song will make the top 10. Its moving up on the Mediabase chart mainly because songs are going recurrent. As other songs continue to climb and receive airplay, Open Prettier may be left behind as it gets overtaken by so many songs that have/are coming out (Brad, ZBB/Jackson, Jason, Rascal Flatta, Carrie, ...).

^ Most of those songs are already well ahead of her. I see no problems with this reaching the Top 10. Getting it to #1 might be a bit too difficult, but I think its a bit of a stretch to say this won't at least crack the Top 10 eventually. Its likely to take a bit longer, but it should still be able to do it.

Taylor, Zac Brown, Kenny, Brad, Sugarland, and Rascal Flatts are all ahead of her now... and Miranda seems to be doing a little bit better lately. I don't think this will be a #1 hit, but I believe it will eventually come close to the top 10...

Agreed. I also predict that the high number of nominations should translate to a lot of awards for her. About time the CMAs gave her some recognition. I think this song is still likely to do quite well as is though, now that she's made a name for herself and this song is climbing quite well and the daily updates show a lot of promise.

Despite the less-than-stellar start, I don't see this abruptly wilting away like "Dead Flowers" did. Rather, I see this experiencing a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race approach in the vein of "Gunpowder and Lead" and "Famous in a Small Town", but with an accelerated push as it reaches around #10. This song certainly has much venom as several of Ms. Swift's songs, but I also happen think that it's much better than several of Taylor's similarly-themed songs.
I also expect this to reach the top ten, even if it needs another 8-10 weeks (or more) to get there.
Since 'Dead Flowers' was a flop, that unquestionably means that we'll get at least two more singles from 'Revolution', and the first of those two songs could conceivably set the table for her to take her career to the next level.
She won't catch Carrie in this year's race for the top female country singles artist over the course of the final twelve weeks of the 2010 chart year which ends on November 27th, but the 2011 race between herself and Ms. Underwood should be a blast to watch, barring some horrendous singles choices from either one of them.

I don't necessarily think Swift and Lambert play to the same crowd, so it may not be the best comparison/case study. I would even argue they play to different demographics, despite Swift and Lambert only being six years apart in age. That said, I find both artists to be talented songwriters, though I do agree I prefer this over "You Belong With Me" because of the comparatively twangy production and added tongue-in-cheek grit from Lambert. I actually feel we might get only one more single after this. I'm hoping it's "Virginia Bluebell", because I believe, if Lambert was intending for this era to showcase her well-rounded artistic persona, that track would bring her full-circle and prove she can just as effectively deliver a sweet-natured, inspirational ditty just as well as she can deliver an achingly cinematic heartbreak rock ballad, a serious-minded twangy punchy mid-tempo, a devastatingly intimate acoustic ballad or a flirtatious, edgy and sarcastic up-tempo. Underwood and Lambert have two starkly different aims (not dissing either here at all). The former is more geared toward delivering commercially successful anthems many can universally relate to, while the latter is more inclined to the artistic development of her music even if it means sacrificing some potential radio success (Lambert undoubtedly wants to be successful, but she's also not as willing as most other artists to compromise artistic integrity to achieve such means, at least from what we've seen to date). That said, I just don't expect Lambert to size up to Underwood in that department. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

I'm also hoping that she releases that, if not simply for the fact that it, like THTBM, is a memorable ballad that should be a hit. If there's 2 more singles though, I hope "Heart Like Mine" is released, as I love that song very much. Her songs are climbing faster now so she should be able to release more singles than in the past, so thats good. I wonder when her next album will be released. My guess would be Fall 2011, but its a bit early to tell.

Well after this one has it's run I still think that "Me And Your Cigarettes", "Airstream Song", "Makin' Plans", "Heart Like Mine" and "Virginia Bluebell" could all be released and do well. "Love Song" probably would do the best off the album but I really hope it's not released. "Airstream Song" or "Me And Your Cigarettes" would be my first choices.

"Virginia Bluebell" is a favorite of mine, the simple acoustic type production reminds me a bit of "The House That Built Me".

I'd love for "Makin' Plans" to be released, it's flawless. The only concern, though, is that it's possibly too short for a radio single, only two verses then a minute or so instrumental.

"Airstream Song" next, please. That's her absolute best ever.
I'd be good with "Virginia Bluebell" or "Makin' Plans" as well.

Yeah, I'd like either 'Airstream Song' or 'Heart Like Mine' next. It's gonna be hard to pick the next single, though. There's still a handful of songs that I think would work well on radio.

Forget talking about singles after "Only Prettier"... "The House That Built Me" is still #1 on the Sirius/XM hot 30!

Just goes to show the growth of "Revolution" from the previous 2 albums. There's still several options they can look at for single #5... not a lot of filler on this album (and it's got 15 tracks!). While Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was a solid release, you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of options for a 5th single.
Personally, I'd go with "Me and Your Cigarettes" as the 5th single.

I don't entirely agree, as I do think "Guilty In Here" and "Down" could have done something, but I will otherwise agree that her softer, vulnerable material on the album, as well as her edgier material, lacked a nuance to it, where either would veer too heavily towards "Desperation" or to blind rage in the musical sense, despite the songwriting proving there's much more wit and depth than meets the ear. Seeing the song title sometimes makes me think "Me, Your Cigarettes & Charlie Talking"! Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

From the Country Forum Rules & Guidelines: 6. Stay on topic: Threads for singles should be used to discuss the single's chart run and the single itself. The threads should not be used to discuss subsequent single possibilities unless the current single has already peaked. The staff will allow some latitude for good tangential discussions pertaining to the artist, his/her/their career trajectory, or some historical significance the artist or single may have.

I really do hope this picks up :(. I find the chorus to be one of her best. The let's shake hands section with that lovely guitar to back it up really elevates the song and really gives it some character. That being said, all the new releases the past few months have caused it to get lost in the shuffle :(

I've been hearing this on the radio a lot lately. For awhile I wasn't hearing it at all, just "THTBM" and "White Liar" because of all the heavy recurrent airplays, I guess.
Hope this one does really well... sounds great on radio!

I'm not really a fan of this song, but I think it's doing well enough. It's closing in on the top 20 now, and it looks like the first rush of the really big songs (Sugarland, Taylor, Carrie, RF, ZBB, Brad) are all ahead of her now, with Keith probably passing her soon too. But this is the chart run I expected, more slow and steady. It's not in the same vein as "The House That Built Me" was...that was a phenomenal song that was so different, such a striking ballad, that it sort of caught people off guard, hit people in the hearts, got some momentum, and just took off. I think "Only Prettier" is still a hit, but as indulgecountry said, it had a lot of recurrent airplay to compete with (and still does somewhat), and a lot of other competition too. THTBM put Miranda on the map, but not every song is going to be a 4-week #1 mega-hit.

This song has so much twang and the subject matter is not that relatable. Its mainly been going up slowly due to songs going recurrent. So many songs have past Only Prettier since its release: ZBB/Jackson, Brad, Jason, and this morning Carrie.
Recent posts here have been on OTHER songs on Revolution. This song and the video has created no real buzz. Miranda's name and her many CMA nominations didn't help much. I doubt it will make the Top 10.
