I absolutely love the sample of "Ghost Rider" by Suicide in this song. Oh, damn! I never retained the knowledge that they were the original artist that the Rollins Band covered on The Crow soundtrack. So I listened to the Suicide original for the first time tonight, and while it was obvious what M.I.A. took, I went ahead and listened to "Born Free" for the third time. And she didn't so much sample "Ghost Rider" as she looped it and built a new song on top of it, like she did with The Clash's "Straight to Hell." The first listen didn't do much for me, the second one was while watching the video, which caused a huge shift in my reaction to the song, and by the third listen, I actually liked it and may end up charting it. I'm a casual fan, in that I only like "Paper Planes," but I've had a burned copy of Arular for 3 years now. I tried to listen to it 2-3 times, but it really didn't do anything for me and it just seemed like she was being hyped for her musical ambition and life story than the actual resulting songs on the record. I pulled it back out last month, after reading that she was gearing up for her third album, but I don't think I made it the whole way through. I'm definitely more open-minded to it, now that her hype has finally subsided between album cycles. I'm trying to appreciate her more before the new disc comes out. Unfortunately, I just streamed the first half of Kala for the first time tonight and I had to shut if off and listen to something more enjoyable that didn't demand so much of my attention and patience. Is this going for adds? It'd be so cool if this went for adds, but I have no clue if stations would pick this up the way they did "Paper Planes". Yeah, I don't know. I'd love to see "Born Free" go for adds, but even if it did, I'd be pleasantly surprised if it racked up a triple-digit spin total in any given week. (Which might be enough to crack the Alternative Top 50 at the rate that chart is going, but that's another story...) Though MTV could never air "Born Free" without essentially neutering it (and understandably so), what I'd love is for the video to face off against Lady Gaga's "Telephone" at the VMAs this year and take the Video of the Year prize. "Telephone" pretty much had it in the bag (and still might, knowing MTV) before this came along.

Huh? Sum 41 had a #1 with the second single they released. This list looks made up. You look made up. He just posted all 22 of Korn's charting singles, their entry dates, and where they all peaked. He has all this information at his fingertips. And to prove you wrong, so do I: "Fat Lip" didn't make it to #1 on Radio & Records' Alternative chart. Sorry. It spent 3 nonconsecutive weeks at #2. First it was shut out by Tool's "Schism." Then it was shut out by Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal."

Just to go back a few posts, the reason why "St. Anger" tanked had nothing to do with critical reception. It had to with the fact that most Metallica FANS hated the song, and they didn't pick up many new fans with it either. When your fanbase doesn't like the single, chances are, it's pretty much f**ked. I liked "St. Anger." And "Frantic." The whole album, while I like it okay, doesn't have much replay value. And that's just because the songs were so goddamned long. I'm not always in the mood for epic Metallica songs that actually have guitar solos, but when you don't have any solos, your songs need to be shorter, otherwise you're just repeating the same parts ad nauseum, which is what Metallica were guilty of, bizarrely. It's like, with no solos, they felt like the songs weren't long enough. (Although "St. Anger," at 7+ minutes, and "Frantic," at 5+ minutes, never made me check my watch.)

I want to like this band's original music, as I've known who they are for over a decade now, but I haven't been exposed to any of it, and one listen to this didn't leave a memorable impression.

I didn't. We already have an Evanescence. And Amy didn't exactly light the world on fire for very long the last time around and that was 3 years ago.
(And, yes, I know the story of this band.)

www.vimeo.com/11219730 (9-minute video) Holy sh**. :o :o I was literally clutching my hair with both hands after a certain point (you'll know when) all the way to the end, which cuts off abruptly with no resolution (which is probably the point). If Rage Against the Machine were still making new music, they'd probably have made a video this provocative a long time ago. Oh yeah, by the way, there's a song in there, too.

No way this band would've made the chart, let alone been signed to Reprise Records, had Kings of Leon not blown up last year. Good god!
I can't think of a more open-and-shut case of a record label pushing a copycat act in the wake of something successful. Holy. F*cking. Cow.

Streamed this tonight, once I saw it made the Alt Top 50. Verdict: Eh.

I don't understand what several of you see in this song. I don't see it as any better than the first 2 CTE singles (in fact, I like it the least). I find it fairly tiresome and plain.

No clue what this sounds like, but in my head, I expect it to sound like "Boys on the Radio," the gorgeous album cut on Celebrity Skin. If Rolling Stone hadn't completely overhauled their website, rendering all their album review links obsolete, I could say for certain, but I seem to recall the reviewer likening "Boys on the Radio" to a sunny drive on the Pacific Coast Highway in a convertible.

This song is slowly growing on me. I made my Top 40 late Thursday night, but by Friday, for sure, this song would've made my imaginary Hot 100 and will be in consideration for next week's chart.

I like the fact that this song has a subtitle now instead of simply being called a suburb nobody outside of California will have ever heard of.

Haha. First time I've been described as such I must admit You're a fan of this track I take it? Sorry, but I just find it fairly dull and repetitive. Yeah, man. There's a delicate beauty to it if you have a long enough attention span. 01. That's What You Get A+ 02. Decode 03. Brick by Boring Brick 04. crushcrushcrush A 05. Misery Business 06. Third one to Alternative I meant. I'm aware of ''The Only Exception''. What a boring track! You're a boring track. I could see this doing as well as "Brick By Boring Brick". I can't. "Brick by Boring Brick" didn't get as high as "Ignorance," and the album's only getting older. (And goddammit, my station played "Decode" a fair amount, "Ignorance" a little bit, and "Brick" not at all. >:() Personally I haven't been as impressed with this album as I was with the first. Hayley sounds much better on the Airplanes track IMO. You mean "...as I was with the previous one." This is their third album. And unless the B.o.B. song is waiting for me on All Access's "Cool New Music" page somewhere, I can wait until dude's album comes out next week and just buy it. Between "Nothin' on You," Lupe Fiasco, Hayley Williams, T.I., Eminem, Rivers Cuomo, and DJ Muggs, it seems like a slam dunk.

u know, I read that they chose Odd One over Riptide as the second single. Since my Alt station played the hell out of "War," I keep forgetting this is actually only the second "official" single to everyone else. How did I get so lucky. 2 months later and I'd already forgotten all over again that we're officially only on single #2, here.

Recurrent when it has enough spins to be #15. Is there a 20/ 14 rule now?! No, it's just a fuck-up in only the second week of the rule. >:( "Bad Romance" is clinging to #15 on the Pop chart this week. Fun fact: Lady Gaga has three songs in the Top 20, even with the new 20/15 rule in place. Might as well. She's about the only pop artist making consistently top quality songs lately.

I really want to like Jack Johnson more, but I heard this song for the third time or so this morning (and first on the radio), and while it didn't do anything for me the first couple times, it still didn't this time either. Plus, I still couldn't tell you a thing about the song 10 minutes later.

There's something wrong with the format when a band like Story of the Year can't get any airplay whatsoever. And what's wrong with Onerepublic? Our local alternative station played Apologize. If they hadn't hooked up with Timbaland for a remix, they'd be perceived in the same category as The Fray -- not a band that draws much pathological hatred. Actually our alternative plays the crap out of 3OH!3 as well -- I discovered Don't Trust Me after hearing it 3 times in one day on 93.3 here in Colorado. See, now that you've taken the time to open up and write more than a quick disparaging sentence, I can respect what you have to say now. You've fully demonstrated that you can be a reasonable person with intellectual contributions. I actually agree with you 100% about OneRepublic being a respectable band.

Never heard of them before now. Not bad. I don't know that it's necessarily too heavy for active rock, but it doesn't have a strong melodic hook. And to be honest, that first melodic line in the chorus feels a little weak. Singer reminds me of Pete Loeffler, Ben Burnley, and Alex Varkatzas, all mixed up.
The stuttering guitar bludgeons like heavier Sevendust, and it's a technical song, so I can see why this would be right up your alley, Jamie.

Me too....Who put the doggie in the dog house....lol, seriously bad lyrics that was just too fun to not like. You did, baby, you did. It had such a low-key, flat-out weird sound to it, too. You'd never guess "Mmm x4" and this one were done by the same band. Lyrically it kinda reminds me of that memorable scene in The Fugitive, where Tommy Lee Jones rattles off every type of "-house" he wants searched for Harrison Ford.

Deeply saddened to read the news this morning. I own all their studio albums, except the first two, which I do have on my hard drive, but aren't necessarily worth purchasing. I got to see them play live twice. Quite the opposite of Curtis, Type O is probably one of the most popular bands across the largest number of my high school friends. Like, I'm having trouble thinking of another band a particular rough dozen of us would agree on more.
Their epic, morose, and often beautiful music was full of bone-dry, often black humor. Live, Pete was always cracking smart-aleck insults at his bandmates and at the audience. I mean, just go to Wikipedia and read the overviews of each of their albums and you'll get an idea just how funny Peter and the guys really are.
Bloody Kisses and October Rust are pretty much their best two albums.
If I were to make a collection of their best songs, I'd choose:
Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity Christian Woman Black No. 1 [Their signature song] We Hate Everyone Love You to Death My Girlfriend's Girlfriend Wolf Moon Everyone I Love Is Dead Creepy Green Light Everything Dies I Don't Wanna Be Me Dead Again Halloween in Heaven

Coming from a guy that's listening to Ke$ha. Ke$ha makes horrible music. I don't know how you can stand listening to that crap without banging your head on a wall. "Tik Tok" hit the Top 10 on my personal chart and "Blah Blah Blah" is currently in my Top 30, soon to get shafted because America shortchanged it and has already moved on to "Your Love Is My Drug." (To be fair, I can't watch the "Tik Tok" video, though, and am scared to try any others, because it's so clearly calculated and phony, and not genuine at all, obviously conceptualized by somebody with no clue how to convey any authenticity to the dumb lyrics she's singing in the first place.) Another sucky song compliments of the Band of Donkeys. Seriously, fuck off already. "Is There a Ghost" and "Detlef Schrempf," ftw.

In addition to "Mmm x4," I really enjoyed "Keep a Lid on Things," which my secondary Alternative station played frequently back in 1999.

They already had this idea for "This Too Shall Pass" and were planning it before they filmed the marching band video. From what i've heard, they only did the Marching Band video because they had pressure from their now-former label EMI to create a video for the song before the album came out. They had alot of problems with EMI, mostly dealing with the fact that EMI kept removing the embedding off the band's Youtube videos. The band's singer Damian Kulash Jr. wrote an op-ed in the New York Times explaining their problems with EMI shortly before they decided to leave the label. Thanks for sharing all that.

Also, they don't exactly have Epic Records money behind them this time, either.
At this point in their career and based on this song's performance thus far, I don't see them having any more notable radio hits.

For anybody that owns or has heard the new album:
I haven't listened to it since January, but I always thought the intros and/or outros on some of the tracks, while strange and unsettling (the desired effect), were rather unnecessary.
I put the album on last night for the first time in three months and had an interesting revelation, one I partially confirmed today.
The intro to "Beautiful and Strange" sounds an awful lot like Danny riding his big wheel around the Overlook Hotel (over the hardwood floors and carpets/rugs).
The outro of "1000 Mile Journey" (before the music fades in) sounds an awful lot like Jack playing catch with himself against the wall of the big room he was in.
So I put on the DVD today and while the film score drowns out a lot of Danny's big wheel, it's pretty safe to say Mudvayne either re-created that sound or they sampled an excerpt and built it into ambience of their own.
The evidence is clearer with the sound of Jack's ball hitting the wall. They don't rip it straight from the film, but they take a chunk of it and chop it up and EQ it to suit their own desired effect.

I think the 21st Century Breakdown ship has sailed at this point, at least for Alternative radio, and any new single sent will be lucky to crack the Top 50.
