It's only a matter of time Z100 starts playing this. The reason? Surprise surprise, Z100's sister station WKTU is already spinning this:
WKTU 35 35 MARTIN GARRIX Animals 19 17 2 0.3406

As mentioned in the chart thread, this will be #40 tonight if Lupe Fiasco gets purged. :)

SUNDAY PUBLISHED 1/12 UPDATE:
CHR/Pop: 44 41 MARTIN GARRIX Animals 899 691 208 6.862
Rhythmic: 51 44 MARTIN GARRIX Animals 364 396 -32 2.688
Ugh! It was close. Seems that next week will be inside the Top 40. Being said that, I don't remember if it was posted before or not, but if that happens, would it be the first instrumental (*) song to reach the Top 40 on CHR/Pop?
(*) I know it's kind of debatable because "Animals" includes the lyric: "We are the f*cking animals" on it, but it's mainly instrumental, I think.

Anyway, I hope "Animals" could still climbing to surprass the #33 spot.
(*) Alternate link. The official one is blocked in my country :'(

I believe this is the third, after "Sandstorm" and "Levels", but like the latter, it has minimal lyrics, whereas "Sandstorm" has none at all.

Updating this since I posted a short response from my phone last night. There were instrumental hits at CHR/Pop in the 70s, 80s and 90s too. If we're talking about (non-disco) dance music only, the earliest I can think of that was a dance instrumental is Robert Miles' "Children" (#17 CHR/Pop in July 1996). Some others that went Top 20: Love Unlimited Orchestra - "Love's Theme" (#2 CHR/Pop 1974) Walter Murphy - "A Fifth of Beethoven" (#5 CHR/Pop 1976) Meco - "Star Wars Theme" (#1 CHR/Pop 1977) Chuck Mangione - "Feels So Good" (#4 CHR/Pop 1978) John Williams - "Theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (#13 CHR/Pop 1978) Herb Alpert - "Rise" (#1 CHR/Pop 1979) Chuck Mangione - "Give It All You Got" (#12 CHR/Pop 1980) Vangelis - "Chariots Of Fire" (#4 CHR/Pop 1982) Harold Faltermeyer - "Axel F" (#3 CHR/Pop 1985) Kenny G - "Songbird" (#6 CHR/Pop 1987) Kenny G - "Silhouette" (#16 CHR/Pop 1988) David A. Stewart & Candy Dulfer - "Lily Was Here" (#12 CHR/Pop 1991) Kenny G - "Forever In Love" (#9 CHR/Pop 1993) Clayton + Mullen - "Theme From Mission: Impossible" (#11 CHR/Pop 1996) I was going to include MFSB's "TSOP" which hit #3 in 1974, but that had a few background vocals (although I guess that's fairly similar to this and "Levels"). The same goes for Van McCoy's "The Hustle" (#1 in 1975). Those are the instrumental hits I can think of off the top of my head (there were definitely more). So basically, there were major instrumental hits in every decade the CHR/Pop chart existed with the exception of the prior decade.

Heh, I opted not to go back that far, though I had no idea "Children" was also a dance instrumental (I've never heard the song).

For what it's worth, it may have missed on Mediabase this week but on Billboard's mainstream chart this comes in at #39.

"Animals" will, certainly, not be the first instrumental to hit the top 40. But they have gotten, increasingly, rarer. There was an 11 year drought before "Levels" charted in 2012. I've been keeping track of the pop chart since 1991. Here's rundown of all the instrumentals I can think of that have made the top 40 since then. Several have already been mentioned.
David A. Stewart featuring Candy Dulfer - Lily Was Here (#12, 1991) David Sanborn - Bang Bang (#21, 1992)* Kenny G - Forever In Love (#9, 1993) Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen - Theme From Mission: Impossible (#11, 1996) Robert Miles - Children (#17, 1996) Kenny G - Auld Lang Syne (#40, 2000)** Darude - Sandstorm (#33, 2001) Avicii - Levels (#34, 2012)* Martin Garrix - Animals (TBD, 2014)*
* Has minor vocal bits, but is, technically, considered an instrumental ** The "Millennium Mix" of this song was sent to pop with sound bytes from the 20th century; I wouldn't consider these "lyrics".

*shrug* I didn't think we'd get exhaustive on this...but there is one you're missing. "Southampton" (#39, 1998). ;)

I f**king love "Children" by Robert Miles. This (and "One & One"). Plus, "Children" has one of the most recognizable melodies ever.

Surprised no one mentioned Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme" in 1985. The instrumental went to #2 on CHR/POP chart. I love both "Sandstorm" & "Children". And I like the mashup between the two songs called " Children of the Sandstorm".

With "Perfume", "Unconditionally" and "Alone Together" crashing to the core, this will probably spike up in position in the next few days. Shakira just passed him, and nothing else behind him is gaining more at the moment.

It should get near top 30 next week with this jumping over Chris Wallace and going over FOB and Flo Rida later on.
