I was just reading a Kelly Clarkson interview and this part rang so true to Rob's current situation, too.
Smith asked, "Do you feel picked apart at times?"
"In my twenties, yes, I felt that pressure all the time," Clarkson said. "Everybody always had something to say -- musically, physically, what I was saying disappointed, whatever.
"Once I hit 30, I don't know what happened, but like, I'm cool with, if you think I should do that, that's awesome, that's great for you and your world, but this is what's happening in my world, and this is what I'm rocking musically, this is what I'm rocking physically, this is what I'm rocking emotionally. You can either love it, or you don't have to. There's plenty of other artists out there to love."
That's kind of my feeling on parts of this thread. There's music out there for everyone. If you don't like Rob's stuff anymore, that's okay. I'm sure there's lots of other music out there that you do enjoy. I think this pop album is going to be something that Rob has always wanted to do. So at 43 he went for it. If only a few fans come along for the ride, I'll think he'll survive. Me - I'm going to go watch that video again. Best video for me since Mad Season (also directed by Phil Harder). I've always loved that video.
Peace out!

Kyle - I really don't think they'll come out with a new single this summer. Trust You is looking to have a good shot at top 10 on HotAC. She's So Mean only peaked at #6? and they held on to that single for a long time. Rob isn't Katy Perry where 5 singles are going to be released. It takes a lot of money to send a song to radio and I think this is doing well enough that Atlantic will be content. I could be wrong but I've followed these boards for a while now for more artists than just Rob and without the big pop hit - multiple quickly released singles don't happen. Now, if this doesn't hit and the album is out of the top 100 in a month or so...I could see a ballad come out for Christmas sooner maybe than planned. A ballad for Christmas time is probably the strategy any way. I just hope it performs better than Overjoyed. I never got into that one but I can see why it was released. MB20 had had success with that single approach before. Sorry, I should be saying insta-grat instead of single. Just releasing a song and not pushing it to radio. I understand what you are saying though Sidenote, found this channel on YouTube with a bunch of Great Unknown songs on it (It has high quality versions of One Shot, Wind It Up, and NLYTM from live shows) : www.youtube.com/channel/UCDqDiRITRR2VWMFFrn2vVnA

idolman88 - I don't know how you can say 3 comments on the yahoo board make anyone who thinks this is a good video "in the minority." Search @thisisrobthomas on twitter or look at his facebook page and you'll see tons of positive reactions. I've had Hold On Forever stuck in my head since I downloaded it, and of the new songs I have heard, it's at the bottom of my list. Hoping they release #1 track as the next single instead. Yeah I think I was just half asleep when I posted that. Really can't judge a minority by 4 comments. Sorry.

Just heard Hold On Forever...this is not anything like Ever The Same, but it is quite good. I think it is a song that would have performed as well as Mockingbird, it's solid, but still, it's very NOT Matchbox Twenty although it is a great song. It will definitely please his fans, but it's not the big hit that would get people talking as the first release.
Really hope Trust You catches on and becomes big, but I feel like the promotion is really, really, lacking.

Oh man...just saw the Trust You video...there is no way at all VH1 plays that thing. It is borderline horrible. I hate to be negative but everything about this whole Trust You thing seems half-assed, and even worse, it is just not very good. I think people are frustrated because this isn't RT at all, it never has been, and even worse, if you are going to try to go the pop route, make it good and as you would say in one of his tracks "go big or go home". The video is just him singing with go-go dancers....COME ON. I would think some posters on this forum could literally make that themselves?
I just don't understand any of it. On another note, bullet is falling and is only at +250 right now...we might get a second single after all by August, I kind of hope so. Because RT seems like a good dude, excellent songwriter, voice sounds as good as it has ever, but this whole Trust You thing just doesn't make sense at all.

I don't see them releasing another single to radio in August. Even if "Trust You" struggles on the charts from here on out, I see the label stubbornly moving forward with it. If it does tank, then this album is in trouble. There's always a chance that the second single could do a lot better, but usually if a first single tanks the second one doesn't do any better.

Just noticed this bullet just dropped to +118. My god, we could be looking at a negative bullet by the end of the week and just knowing how the charts work, this could fall off the entire chart by end of July.
Is it safe to say we are talking about the flop we envisioned a little over a month ago? Time for single number two but knowing how his record company has managed him and M20 the past 15 years, who knows what is on the table. I could go on about the mismanagement, as I know a few other posters could as well, but I don't have the energy to right now. At this point, you just have to feel bad for RT. Too talented for the disaster of what this single is.

I don't understand why they aren't promoting him more, I remember this same thing happened when North was coming out.

For all of those who have been on the board for a while, regardless of you like RT or not, but familiar with his music, explain to me why Atlantic Records did (or did not) do the following:
On Yourself of Someone Like You, they milked it, made videos for every release, and more or less, nailed it with the order of release, job well done. Everything was fine until after If You're Gone, which ended up being one of the bigger hits of last decade:
- While I love Mad Season, I think they could have waited a bit to release it, and put Last Beautiful Girl out before it, which I believed to be a little more radio friendly. I can't nitpick too much, but they didn't even bother with a music video, looking back, it's like they started to give up after Mad Season.
- On More Than You Think You Are, I still don't understand why Disease was released first, they weren't going to win back hard rock fans. Unwell should have been out first, but who can complain, it did extremely well. Bright Lights was a great song, but released WAY too early. I recall Unwell still being Top 3 when it was released, and I believe they didn't even have a real video for it. Lastly, knowing RT was going solo, why wouldn't they release "The Difference", aka If You're Gone 2, and as good, probably even before Bright Lights. Their was probably three other songs on album that would have fared better, but I'll never understand why The Difference wasn't released.
- Rob's first album, why the heck wasn't Ever The Same released prior to This Is How A Heart Breaks (why was that even released at all?)
- Rob's second album was solid, the whole AAA sound seemed promising and what I was hoping to see with direction as usually a crossover to AAA means critical acclaim, but they didn't go that route. Really think a real release with video fore Meltdown would have been smart, but what do I know. He even had good praise on this album from critics, but maybe it didn't sell as well?
- North...I don't know what the deal was with that. Album was half good, half horrible. The concept of letting other bandmates "join in" gave it a real weird vibe. Parade was such a solid song, but they didn't release that either. Put Your Hands Up? Who approved that to even be cut?
I could go on...would really love to hear others chime in.

Per Rob about on hour ago on Facebook...
The video started in my head. I wanted a 70s inspired concept heavy performance video. I went online and found picture after picture of different looks. Colors, images, things I wanted it to look like. Then, the first and only director I called was Phil Harder. We had worked together a couple times before. I knew his style and that he knew exactly what I was talking about. Then he came in with more looks and ideas and took it to another level. It's different than anything I've done.
Love it or hate it I think you have to at least acknowledge that this is what Rob wanted - song and video.
As far as the other stuff goes, I don't think MB20 was ever a big priority at Atlantic but I do think ROB was a big priority on his first album and I think it probably did what they were hoping for. Where I think Rob made a mistake was taking what I think amounted to four years between album 1-2. He toured with MB20 in between and they had their GH album. IMO, he should have just released the GH with no new music and worked on his second solo album. I think the gap really hurt his potential as a solo artist. I'm not Rob but I have been a long time fan and we all know that he wanted to keep the band together with his buddies. I'm not saying that he should have broken the band up but I think if he wanted a solo career he should have hopped into album two to keep up his momentum from album one. Instead he had a long tour with MB20 and probably short changed his writing on album two. Just my .02 on the period that I think Rob really needed to cement his status as a solo artist.
One other thing, he has always been with a very small management company, Lippmann Entertainment. Only other big client is George Michael. I think this didn't help MB20 or Rob has they didn't have the pull that the big PR companies have.
And, this is probably the most important thing, MB20 and Rob apparently have turned down a lot of opportunities when they were big that maybe they should have taken. You may think I'm crazy but I swear I watched a video once where Rob said that they were asked to do the Superbowl Halftime after their big break through but the band was exhausted from years of touring and they declined. Now, they may not have been the only band playing that year but were asked. We all have heard that Rolling Stone only wanted Rob on the cover - not the entire band - so he turned it down. They never asked again and have pretty much trashed him since. They haven't licensed their music for any commericals, etc., etc. This all starts to add up over time. I'm sure they had very good reasons at the time but sometimes I think Adam Levine has it right - sell yourself and your music as much as you can while people still care.
Edit - What I'm talking about is Rob being more a household name than he is now. He DOES have a solo career but he's playing theaters and not arenas - that's what I mean. And that's okay - not everyone is going to be Justin Timberlake but I think at one time Rob had that kind of potential/buzz behind him. He just choose a different path for himself. Now us fans can't be too disappointed that at 43 radio isn't jumping all over his new stuff. :) He has had a VERY good run at radio.

Too talented for the disaster of what this single is. I still don't think Trust You is done on Hot AC. A lot of songs saw their bullets decrease in size the last few days because I think quite a few stations have special music programming for the 4th of July weekend. Regarding Atlantic's management of RT, it hasn't been perfect, but I feel like it was better than alot of other artists. I LOVE "This Is How a Heart Breaks" but it didn't go to #1 so maybe I'm in the minority on that one. Put Your Hands Up....yeah that was not good and sounded more like a RT song than a MB20 song if it was going to be released. Sometimes I think MB20's producer Matt Serletic needs to put his foot down and say "this is awful, what are you thinking?". I agree about North, I like the album but looking back it was a really strange mix of music.

Now us fans can't be too disappointed that at 43 radio isn't jumping all over his new stuff. :) He has had a VERY good run at radio. All of this is interesting, and I was pretty familiar with. I'll never forget, the first time I saw them in concert, Maroon 5 was an opening act with Harder to Breathe just hitting the radio. Rob came out and said, "Hope you all enjoyed Maroon 5, they are definitely more talented and will end up being a lot better than us, and will be the next big thing", and laughed. Thing is, if it wasn't for Moves Like Jagger, I think Maroon 5 would be getting about as much exposure as Michelle Branch these days... What I'll never understand, is Rob was critically acclaimed with Cradlesong, it sounded like he was really going at the roots, almost Americana, which I swear he said is what he enjoys musically (example, I know he is a big My Morning Jacket fan), so with him turning around and putting Trust You out...I just, I don't know, the song, and the video, it seems all so not him. Why not just become a AAA\Hot AC act, I mean that's where his fanbase is at and honestly, probably wants. The +118 bullet down for Holiday Weekend, yeah, you are totally right, he'll at least have two weeks of holding steady and we'll just have to see where it goes. I hope we are surprised and the album does great, is great, would be awesome. Hold On Forever should have been released instead.

Count me in as another one that loved This Is How A Heart Breaks. I actually thought that was a good choice as the second single. I just don't think Rob's lady ballad fans at HotAC radio ate that song up like they would have had Ever The Same been second. I guess that's what No Brakes was getting at.
Put Your Hands Up - yeah, not one of Rob's better songs. It shouldn't have made the album. I wouldn't have put the Kyle solo write song on their either. I liked it because Rob sounded great on it but the lyrics were just okay. But I will say as far as everybody wanting to be a writer in this band that I did like Paul's English Town. Good song and I liked the way Rob sang it so it was a win-win.

Yeah, I saw MB20 once when M5 was the opener. It's funny how things work out and you are right about M5 - The Voice and Moves Like Jagger brought back M5. I will give them credit thought for keeping up the momentum. Adam taking off his clothes every time he turns around is something that doesn't hurt him with the lady fans either. LOL!
As I said earlier, this is Rob's swan pop record. AAA here we come in the future if they will give Rob/MB20 airtime. Neither have had much chart success at AAA.

I do not have access to AAA Archives, but I am pretty sure they sent "Angry" to that format once, and that was about the only song that ever made its way over there, which makes sense.

This Is A How A Heart Breaks is still one of my favorite songs from Rob to this day. Regarding North- I know a lot of people weren't a fan of Put Your Hands Up but I think it would've been a good choice to release to Pop instead of the horribly written She's So Mean.
One thing I would note about MTYTYA. They originally intended to release All I Need as the 3rd single instead of Bright Lights. I'm kind of glad they made the switch because while All I Need is a good song. It just didn't seem like radio single material to me.

North was a disaster, however, I thought She's So Mean was better than it charted, lyrically, I don't know what to tell you.
I did not dislike "This Is A Heart Breaks", I just found the background vocals of the soulful women not only in that song, but found in other parts of the album so ******** weird and unnecessary. I am insane, but believe that is what started to turn people on Rob and that album. The chart run of Lonely No More was also one of the most bizarre in memory.

All this debating the ins and outs and woulda-shouldas of Thomas' career is missing the bigger point. The man has the career that he wants. He has turned down more opportunities for film, television & licensing than Adam Levine could even dream about. Could his label be doing more? Sure. But I've heard he's real particular as to what he'll do. The guy loves to write, record & perform and that's exactly what he's doing. Somewhere along the way he decided his personal life is more important than his public life and even if it's frustrating for his fans, and probably his label, you've got to admire his lack of ego.
Personally, I think he's a far better writer than any of his collaborators but even he has a few I'm not wild about. Big deal. Every songwriter has some lessor songs. I think the band made a big mistake including too many group written songs but they were smart to at least have Thomas sing most of them. Even Doucette said his song, Englishtown, was a much different animal until Thomas advised some major rearranging which really elevated it. Still , what made the band so successful was Thomas' songs and heartfelt stage performances. Diluting that just to ease other band members insecurities or creative frustrations is unfortunate but probably inevitable when you have a frontman as agreeable as Thomas. I also think he's trying to keep his band happy, but I think eventually solo will be all he does. In the meantime, to paraphrase Sinatra, he's doing his music thing his way and seems pretty damn content. We're the ones who want more.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm going to jump in on Put Your Hands Up, was not a fan of that song. It just felt like an awkward song coming from what they had previously released as a band. North was just a mixed bag of songs. Parade was fantastic, She's So Mean was catchy, but the lyrics really lacked. I Will, English Town and Sleeping at the Wheel were also great, but but what I found interesting was how I enjoy the bonus tracks from the deluxe version of North more. Help Me Through This, I Don't Wanna Be Loved, Waiting on a Train, I Believe In Everything, and Straight for This Life were all much better than what was on the album. Parade was the only song that I that I felt has the classic Matchbox Twenty feel to.
I will say I did enjoy The Way, the song that Kyle Cook did the vocals on, much like how he did the vocals for Hang on YOSLY.
Overall I still wouldn't say it wasn't a bad album though, I've listened to it in full many times. I think I just preferred the less-poppy songs on this album.

Kai - I do agree with your post 100%. It's just fun as a fan to discuss the what ifs now and then with other fans. :) You are right though. Rob meet Marisol between the first and second MB20 albums and he has said many times that family comes first. Nothing wrong with that at all.

One Shot is now showing a track time on iTunes (2:50). Could we be expecting this as a instant grat next week or soon?
I figured they were going to release I Think We'd Feel Good Together next.

Is that the one that was written with American Authors? Hopefully not.
Bullet is not recovering from Holiday Weekend, this will definitely get in negative a week from now.

Sad news...I hope she'll be okay. (Mari is Rob's wife for those of you that don't follow him on-line.)
From Rob on Facebook
Fans and friends,
By now many of you have read the press release and realize that Mari and I are going through a bit of a rough patch.
Last week, after an MRI for something unrelated, doctors saw what seems to be a lesion on the base of Mari’s brain.
We are being cautiously optimistic that this is something we caught early and can take care of in the near future but, as I’m sure you can all understand, we had to temporarily postpone some of the tour dates so that we can focus only on this for a while.
We are so thankful for all of your well wishes and really believe in the good that positive energy can do.
While this is all we are focused on right now, we will get through it and be able to share many more moments together and with all of you in the future.
Thanx for your love and understanding.
Mari and Rob

lmao you can totally tell that "One Shot" is the one written with the guy from American Authors. It sounds exactly like them. It sounds like a throwaway AA song (though most of their songs can be). Not a fan of it.

The more I listen to "Hold On Forever", I can't put together at all why it wasn't the debut single off of this album. It's something that sounds genuine RT, has a sound that actually sounds like it came from 2015 but could be timeless, and overall, so much better and not dependent on others. I don't need to beat a dead horse, but One Shot is almost as bad as the latest "new" single from American Authors, in my opinion, one of the worst debut from a follow-up singles released to Hot AC as a "Hot AC Single" this decade

Also, Trust You still has a positive bullet on Hot AC!
