Hope everyone had a nice holiday :)
#141 - Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix) - Los Del Rio | 1996
#140 - Good Vibrations - Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch | 1991 | Making you feel the rhythm is my occupationBefore Marky Mark, was there ever a male pop singer who was as heavily objectified as Marky Mark? While the 1980s had women in bikinis prancing around on beaches, on cars, and in strip clubs, you just didn't see men showing off their assets. Marky Mark changed that game to the (continued) joy of women and gay men everywhere in 1991. So ingrained is Mark's Calvin Klein imagery that it was replicated in a Nick Jonas photo shoot last year. No one else has managed to pull off a career quite like Mark Wahlberg though - from cheesy rapper to underwear model to Academy Award nominated actor - he had a most unusual path. As for the song, well, it's really sold on the power of Mark's sex appeal, but the groovalicious voice of Loleeta Hollaway doesn't hurt either. (Sorry, I couldn't find the whole video on youtube anywhere!)
#139 - Biscuits - Kacey Musgraves | 2015 | We've all got dirty laundry hanging on the line.Kacey earlier this year did something on my chart no female country singer had done, which was hit #1 on my chart. Several women came close and hit #2, but this ode against busybodies just seemed to be magical enough to do it for me. Perhaps it was the insistent twang in her voice, or the cute word play of the song. Maybe it was just bouncy enough and the message just satisfying enough that it caught my attention. It was probably the whole package. Popstop's Chart - #1 (3 weeks) - May 2015
#138 - Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves | 1985 | And it's time to feel good!Well, this is just an infectious slice of feel-good heaven! Back in the 1980's, it was apparently still possible to get excited enough by the mailbox that it could make your entire week. This song starts in high spirits almost immediately with blaring horns and pumped up vocals. Only a dark, demented soul could still have a frown after hearing this song.
| |
#137 - Bodies - Drowning Pool | 2002 | Let the bodies hit the floor.Well, OK, now that you're finished listeninh to Katrina, you're going to have to wipe that smile off your face, get into the mosh pit, and bang your head accordingly. Metal doesn't make a huge appearance in this top 200, but this song has just enough pop element to work for me - perhaps because it is the band's love letter of sorts to their fans in the mosh pit, and so functions as a repetitive dance song for them. Some interesting notes about this song - it was on Clear Channel's banned list after 9/11 and it was used against during interrogation of a prisoner held based on potential Al Qaeda association. Talk about coming full circle. Another note - just over a year after this hit #1 on my chart, the lead singer would be dead from heart disease. RIP. Popstop's chart - #1 (4 weeks) - January 2002
#136 - Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J | 1992 | Don't call it a comeback.Ah LL Cool J is kicking ass and taking names and looking good doing it! This is from arguably LL's most lauded album of the same title which also featured the classic Around the Way Girl. The instant classic opening line was in reference to LL's career, which had taken a beating from his previous album. Even though LL was only 24 at the time, he HAD been around for years, but it was this song that cemented his place in hop hop. Inspired by his grandmother, who told him to knock his critics out (until I researched this, I always thought is was about kicking a drug habit - oh well) in the wake of gangsta rap which he found irrelevant to his career. It didn't matter - this song works because of the heartfelt anger and conviction in his rap.

I do like the Bayside Boys remix. Guilty pleasure though. And surprised Biscuits, being so new, has such an impact. Kacey <3

It is so much easier to do this at work.
#135 - Fireflies - Owl City | 2009 | The disco ball is just hanging by a threadIt was clear that the musical landscape had shifted by the time this hit in the fall of 2009. Lady Gaga had dominated the year and the trend towards dance and electropop was well on its way to hanging around for a few years. And I was ready for shift because it felt like pop was stagnating until then. As the nights grew cooler and longer, this was a perfect song that dealt with dreams and goodbyes that go with the end of summer. Popstop's chart - #1 (2 weeks) - October 2009
#134 - The Mummer's Dance - Loreena McKennit | 1998 | When owls call the breathless moon in the blue veil of the nightI suppose I have to be true to my nearly 11 year old self - this was the first blockbuster ever on my chart - and by blockbuster, I mean nothing has ever topped its reign at #1. At that age, I was pretty lackadaisacal about my chart, so there were some long runs back then. I still like this song, but my obsession has long since faded. I think at the time, this song just made me think of medieval times of knights and kings. Now it just makes me want to go to Ireland. Popstop's chart - #1 (13 weeks) - May - August 1998
#133 - Habits (Stay High) - Tove Lo | 2014 | I gotta stay high all the time to keep you off my mind.Yes, I'm stealing this gif from Codex ! Too bad I don't have the copy where it's his face instead. I love this song for all its heartbreaking despair and loneliness that comes with a break-up. She details her life and desperate need for vices as an escape and release from pain. Oddly, her next single was "Not on Drugs." Sure, Tove Popstop's Chart - #1 (2 weeks) - May 2014
#132 - True Colors - Cyndi Lauper | 1986 | Don't be afraid to let them show.Perhaps Tove Lo should have hit up Cyndi Lauper for a sob session because it is obvious she would be right there with tissues and reminders of all the specialness she is. Such a heartfelt song made is better by Cyndi's distinctive baby-doll voice - perfect for comforting those who feel sad or different. The song has gone on to cement Cyndi's place as a gay icon, activist, and otherwise awesome talent.
| |
#131 - Handlebars - The Flobots | 2008 | I can lead a nation with a microphone.Good lord, this is one of the most chilling songs to ever top my chart. The song builds form the experimental kid who learns to ride without handlebars, and goes on to explore the greatness that humans can achieve from there - reading, inventing, entrepreneurship. But what have some done with those achievements? Subjugation, Murder, Genocide. OUr ability to understand the physics of ourselves, our planet, and the cosmos would be astronomically greater if we weren't cursed with the desire for power. Popstop's chart - #1 (4 weeks) - May - June 2008
#130 - Roll To Me - Del Amitri | 1992

Yayyyy @ MGMT !!! Wasn't it tough having to pick between 'Electric Feel' and 'Kids'? I just saw this. I like Electric Feel, but it wasn't a tough choice - Kids had much greater impact on my chart.

Really liking the mix of music on these 10. Owl City, Los Del Rio, Marky Mark, Flobots, Cindy Lauper, LL Cool J, Drowning Pool, Katrina and the Waves, such good times and memories.
And I had thought that Mama Said Knock You Out was a diss track against Nas. Well, now we know.

A little bit newer mix of songs today...
#129 - Black Velvet - Alannah Myles | 1990 | A new religion that'll bring you to your kneesI can't imagine it's the lyrical content that sold this song, was it? I mean, I guess Elvis is timeless, but were people really all about him and all his velvet painting goodness in the 90s? No, I would argue that this song is a classic based on the bluesiness and sexiness in Alannah's delivery. You can just feel the heat of that Memphis sun dripping from her voice. There's a whole dustiness evoked by teh guitar and drums. Unfortunately, the general public never found a song where she evoked that earthiness again and she remains a one-hit wonder in the states.
#128 - Parachute - Otto Knows | 2014 | All we need to feel is nowThis was a song that snuck up on me, much like Do It Again. Last year was the year I realized I had been neglecting pure dance music for too long. It had made sporadic appearances over the years, but this was one of the songs that brought me back into the fold. It hit number one quickly, and then had a slow descent, not unlike an actual parachute. It only landed at #6 for 2014, but it has killed in recurrent airplay, landing close to the top half of the chart. Popstop's chart - #1 (2 weeks) - August 2014
#127 - Next to Me - Emeli SandΓ© | 2013 | You won't find him drinking at the tables. The teas I'm reading from this song are old school - evocative of Mary Wells' Motown hit "My Guy" - he may not be muscle bound or classically handsome, but he is awesome and amazing! Or "Let's Hear It For the Boy" - my man isn't rich and can;t sing worth s**t, but he is awesome and amazing! And so it is with Emeli - discussing how her man doesn't gamble or drink, and remains at her side. There's almost a religious aspect to the song - you get the feeling she gathers spiritual strength from her man as well. It's that religious-tinged ecstasy that completes sells the song for me. Popstop's Chart - #1 (2 weeks) - April 2013
#126 - Mykonos - Fleet Foxes | 2009 | ...and a sun to maybe dissipate shadows of the mess you made. The harmonies in this song are reminiscent of 1960's harmonies from groups like the Mamas and the Papas. The downbeat nature of this song stands in contrast to the image of Greek island Mykonos, with its impossibly sunny skies and tranquil beaches. Mykonos serves as a derisive escape route in this song. Clearly, a disagreement has been had, and the object of the song has gone the path of dismissiveness and denial. A haunting, yet beautiful song of loss and mourning. Popstop's chart - #2 (4 weeks) - October 2009
#125 - Miss Chatelaine - k.d. lang | 1992 | Every time your eyes meet mine, clouds of qualm burst into sunshine.k.d. lang came out at a time (not all that long ago) when doing so was much more controversial. It was doubly shocking as she had come through the country world. And she was a vegan! Of course, by the time, k.d. had come out, she had left the world of country, and in a Swift-like maneuver went pop. Her first release with this switch was the gorgeous "Constant Craving," which remains her biggest hit in the US to this day. Miss Chatelaine was the follow-up, but didn't chart. It wasn't until I researched this that I discovered "Chatelaine" was the name of a women's magazine who had elected the androgynous k.d. as woman of the year. k.d. decided to have fun with this by girling it up for the video. All that said, I love this song for it's Latin rhythm, lush vocal, and 50s era production.
#124 - What You Waiting For? - Gwen Stefani | 2004 | Take a chance, you stupid hoeOne of my all-time favorite artists, Gwen's career has taken a lot of twists and turns through the ska influence of No Doubt to the cheerleader beat of Hollaback Girl. But What You Waiting For was Gwen;s sound-off that she was directing her own career, which ended up skyrocketing beyond anything she had done with No Doubt. I chose this song because it is one of her most poignant - she's questioning her career at that point in her life - was it worth the sacrifice of not having children or a relationship? As it turns out, she now has both. No issue at all, Gwen! Popstop's chart - #1 (1 week) - December 2004
Additional songs to chart: Southside - Moby featuring Gwen Stefani #1 (5 weeks) - January - February 2001

Macarena has always been in my all time top 20.
As for Alannah Myles, I've always preferred her minor follow-up "Love Is" to Black Velvet. Keep it up!

Blah, I had most of this typed out, and then I hit the backspace, and that somehow turned into the back button on the browser and I lost all my edits.
#123 - Hit - The Sugarcubes | 1992 | Accidentally, you seduced meLong before she was prancing around in swan dresses and assaulting photographers at the airport, Bjork was in an alternative Icelandic rock band that put her island nation on the map. This song ended up being their biggest "HIT," on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming surely the only #1 on the Modern Rock chart to include a verse in Icelandic. Bjork is lounging around happy in her own life and seems legit pissed off that she has fallen in love, which will mean all of the complicated emotions which are sure to follow. Her partner in crime doesn't seem to full embrace the idea either, saying this all "really hurts" repeatedly. Sounds like a fantastic relationship guys - oh, and Bjork's apparently pregnant at the end of the song, too. Prepare for a life full of swan dresses, kid!
#122 - Sweet Love - Anita Baker | 1986 | I feel no shame. I'm in love.Amidst the glam metal, old school rap, and dance pop of the late 1980s, Anita Baker gave the Hot 100 chart a much-needed shot of maturity and class. Her throwback R&B vocals and instrumentation are a welcome change of pace, as she croons through this soulful dedication of love. This was one of two huge top ten hits for Anita and let the world know a new diva was her to class up the joint.
#121 - How Do I Live - Leann Rimes | 1998 | What kind of life would that be?This song goes back to the very earliest days of my chart, and is only the second song in my chart's history to peak at #2. How could I not love Leann at that age, though? She was only a few years older than me, which made her appear more accessible. Her youth works to her advantage here - there was actual a competing remake of a song that Trisha Yearwood recorded and they were both released at the same time. But the kind of neediness required to make this song believable only makes sense coming from a teenage girl who would overdramatize a relationship to this degree. COming from an older woman, it just sounds desperate. Popstop's Chart - #2 (2 weeks) - January 1998
#120 - Can't Get You Out of My Head - Kylie Minogue | 2002 | Your loving is all I think about.Kylie is one of the few artists who managed to hit #1 on both my brother's chart (I Should Be So Lucky) and mine. She has an odd chart history in the US. She had only two top ten hits - the first of which was a remake of The Locomotion, which hit back in 1988. She'd have to wait about fourteen years for her next top ten, which was this song. It's by far the sexier of the songs, and Kylie was looking particularly fierce in a video with a seemingly gravity-defying dress. This song kicked off the longest unbroken string of weeks at #1 by women. A man wouldn't touch the #1 spot until the end of October. Popstop's chart - #1 (5 weeks) - March 2002
#119 - Sleeping Bag - ZZ Top | 1986 | We'll talk about some lovin' while we look at the sky.ZZ Top, from Tush to Legs, were a good ol' Southern Texas group that was all about looking for a good time. The heavily bearded trio (well, ironically the non-bearded member's name was Frank Beard) were known for their electric guitars, incredible videos, and goofy double-entendre'd songs. But they sounded so good doing it!
#118 - Lovefool - Cardigans | 1997 | Come on and fool me.Don't be fooled by the cheeriness and brightness of this song's music - the lyrics are absolutely heartbreaking. The lead singer si facing a relationship that's all but over, but she's desperate to do everything, or have a shred of anything to keep it going. She begs her lover to at least pretend to believing he still cares. A song that is firmly planted in the denial stage within the five stages of loss, it is one of the more honest as well.
