Yay at Duck Sauce and 50 Cent! :) And wow, multiple weeks #1 are this low. :o For the years 1998-2014, I kind of went off my top songs of the year. But if a song placed 4th in 2010 that doesn't mean it couldn't have moved up higher over the years based on recurrent play. For 1985-1993, I referred to my brother's charts, but the results in no way reflect how he charted it. (For example, Rebirth of Slick never cracked his top 10). For 1994-1997, no charts were used.

I think I have a format. When I get time, I'll try to retrofit the previous songs to it! #191 - So Alive - Love and Rockets | 1989 |
Your legs are strong and they're so, so longThis song is all about the atmosphere - the disembodied female voices that sound as if they're off in the distance, the echoed, fuzzy lines in the bridge, the minimalist drum beat - all makes for an eerie song of longing and want. Love and Rockets hit #3 in the US with this song and never returned near such heights again.
#190 - Sexy Bitch - David Guetta featuring Akon | 2010 | I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful This is so far David Guetta's (and Akon's) biggest hit on my chart - it came at a time when dance started to become firmly entrenched in the chart. Akon is a little less subtle with his lust than Love and Rockets were- and I'm not so sure the sexy chick would want Akon's attention, Who really wants to be complicated by saying they are nothing like the neighborhood whore? You fail at disrespectful, Akon! A banger nevertheless! Popstop's chart - #1 (6 weeks) Jan. 2010.
#189 - You Do Something To Me - Sinead O'Connor | 1990 | Do that voodoo that you do so well to me.From the Red Hot + Blue album, a collection of takes on Cole Porter songs, Sinead sounds virtually unrecognizable. This song was recorded at Sinead's height - she had just decimated the charts with "Nothing Compares To You" and had not yet tore up the Pope's picture. Tossing aside the controversial nature of Sinead, her voice is gorgeous here, vulnerable and sweet throughout the song until she loses control at the end to finish the song with a flourish.
#188 - Asereje (The Ketchup Song) - Las Ketchup | 2003 | Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba majabi an de bugui an de buididipíWow, look at all that Spanish! I have no idea what this song is about. I'm not even going to check the translation. Juan, if you're reading this, don't tell me. I don't care! I have my own silly ideas and I like it that way. I love this song in all it's goofy bizarreness. Like why name yourself after Ketchup? LMAO. Are they really boogie-ing in this song? Who cares - let's dance! Popstop's chart - #1 (3 weeks) - February 2003
#187- Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) - Us3 | 1993 | Pop you don't stop til the sweet beat dropsWell, of course, I'm picking this song. I mean popstop is right there in the lyrics! Right there! This song was part of the same trend that the Digable Planets song (#199) was part of - this kind of jazzy hip hop trumpet mash-up. Really, I think this is a trend that needs to be brought back. Herbie Hancock;s "Cantaloupe Island" is sampled - hence the name of the song.
#186 - Hello - Martin Solveig & Dragonette | 2011 | You're all right, but I'm here darling to enjoy the party Uh, whatever, Dragonette, you can say how you're just here to enjoy the party, and all that you're going to say is hello, but I know the truth. You want me so bad you can taste it! This song never made it to #1, but it was held out by Adele who was having a monster year on my chart. These two still managed to make the list! Popstop's chart - #2 (3 weeks) - August 2011

Oh! First of all, I really like the new format. Regarding the songs, so good to see "In Da Club", "Barbra Streisand" (This is amazing and should be higher, but the fact that it made it is amazing nonetheless), "Sexy Bitch", "Asereje (The Ketchup Song)" (Wow! It's not necessary to say that this was huge in Latin America around 2002) and "Hello", which is one of my favourite songs from Martin Solveig and Dragonette's vocals are so damn good on it! As a side note, some of the links go back to the thread. {Spoiler}FYI, the chorus in "Asereje (The Ketchup Song)" isn't Spanish. That's the only thing I'm going to tell you per your request.

your format is a sexy bitch also, YES at Digable Planets! I had forgotten about that song, but man did I love it at the time. On another note, it's hard to believe that the chaste video with the cute guy was controversial for Amy back then, but she was apparently transitioning from Christian pop at that time, so that was highly scandalous. I wonder what they thought about this subsequent video when it featured another cutie taking off his shirt in a laundromat - the blasphemy.
If you think that was a big to-do, you should have seen the reaction when Amy divorced her first husband and then married Vince Gill a year later. Christian fans are still scandalized about that one and it's been 15 years.

Your list is amazing as expected, and I especially enjoy the inclusion of "Money For Nothing", "You're Makin' Me High", "Hold On, We're Going Home", "Horchata", "In Da Club", "What Have I Done To Deserve This?", "Baby, Baby", "Barbra Streisand", "Sexy Bitch", "You Do Something To Me", "Aserje", and "Hello".
Also, what a gorgeous format. <3

Nice to see Justified and Ancient. I wish Cantaloup and Return of Slick were both higher. :(
In a related circle, wonder if we'll see Lucas with the Lid Off at some point.

Thank you all for the nice comments! I will comment on them after this posting #185 - Natural One - Folk Implosion | 1995 | There's no telling what we'll do when we're freeThis song is taken from a movie that came out in 1995 called "Kids." If you've never seen it, it's a bit horrifying. One of the lead character is HIV+ and enjoys sex with middle school age virgins. There's lots of drug use; pretty hair-raising stuff when you ponder that this kind of behavior exists. This song does a good job bolstering the movie's themes - implying the danger of too much freedom, and an ending of falling into oblivion.
#184 - You're Still The One - Shania Twain | 1998 | Look how far we've come, my babyNot only do this do extremely well on my burgeoning chart, but it played at my sister's wedding, so it has a special place in my heart. I think we all know a couple like this - one that we thought would never last, but surprise, they have - and surprise, them lasting was never a surprise to them. I think I'll say surprise again. Surprise! Popstop's chart - #2 (6 weeks) - July-August 1998
#183 - Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel | 1986 | You could have a big dipperThe video is infamous, with its many sly, sexual references, though the song is a bit less subtle. Peter Gabriel's ode to his member and the wonderful things that can happen with it is still delightful, if a bit too cute in our day and age. The music is still on point though - with blasting horns and a gospelesque close-out.
#182 - You Don't Know What Love Is ( You Just Do As You're Told) - The White Stripes | 2007 | Until you say you deserve better, I'm gonna lay right into you.I'm not sure who the narrator is in this song, but I prefer to think it's the boyfriend - criticizing his girl's notions of love - because that is a much darker take than if he is just a concerned friend trying to get her out of an unhealthy relationship. As the boyfriend, it appears that he vows to let her be his doormat until she "grows up," at least as far as he's concerned. So much to read her - is the boyfriend being dickish, or does he just want his woman to have a less infantile view of love? Popstop's chart - #1 (3 weeks) - October - November 2007
#181 - Let It Go - Idina Menzel | 2014 | The cold never bothered me anywayAll hail Queen Elsa, Disney's first lesbian queen! What's that, you say? She's not lesbian? Au contraire! I'm convinced that's the subtext there, and you're not going to convince me otherwise. She basically "comes out" in the movie with this song, she never settles down with a man, and she's an amazing architect! This is one of my go-to songs when I am alone and decide I need a karaoke moment. I think even my son is over Frozen at this point, but on my all-time playlist, it lives on. Looks like it's one hit wonder day on the countdown! #180 - Bust A Move - Young MC | 1989 | She's dressed in yellow, she says hello, come sit next to me, you fine fellow! An entry from one-hit wonder Young MC, who never really had another big hit after this. But what a fun hit it was! Young MC is advising you to bust moves all over the place - at a party, in the school cafeteria, at a movie theater, and at your own cousin's wedding. Sprinkled in there are the opportunities to rhyme "opportunistic" with "materialistic" and "sadistic." Oh my!
#179 - Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) - Blu Cantrell | 2001 | Put your hands on his cash and spend it to the last dime for all the hard timesThis didn't peak very high on my chart, but has killed in recurrent. Blu's gotten more press recently about her psychological issues, but back when this was charting, it was clear she had obvious talent. Unfortunately, she only managed to succeed with this ditty about getting revenge on your man. Well before Carrie Underwood slashed all four tires on her man's truck, Blu was dragging her man's clothes through the street and paying all his bills two months late. This song is a huge go-to for me when I have done karaoke - it's so gleeful in its pain. My only question is who the hell names their kid Soley? . Popstop's chart - #7 - August 2001
#178 - Pictures of Matchstick Men - Camper Van Beethoven | 1989 | Your face just won't leave me aloneHm, I've loved this song for years and have just now discovered it is a cover of a 1960s song by a group called Status Quo. But I'm still sticking with this version, only because the violin sounds much more classy than whatever psychedelic noise they were making in the original. I also learned that the title is a reference to the people seen in the artworks of L.S.Lowry. What that has to do with seeing someone;s face everywhere is beyond me - but now that I know the psychedelic history, I guess it's supposed to be like that.
#177 - Do It Again - Royskopp and Robyn | 2014 | Wait for it. Wait for the buildup. If you had asked me a year ago if this song would be in my all-time list, I'd have said no. It took some time to grow on me. On my own chart, it took over 3 months to hit #1, longer than just about any other song. But over time, I grew to love the breathiness in Robyn's voice, the buzziness of the electropop that Royskopp had produced. Eventually, it hit karaoke in the car status and then there was no turning back. Popstop's chart - #1 (1 week) - September 2014
#176 - Home - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes | 2010 | Do you remember that day you fell outta my window?Sure it may be a little sing-songy, but the idea behind this song is so beautiful Jade and Alexander talk about their nomadic lives, but no matter where they go together, they are home because of their love and comfort with one another. Home doesn;t have to be any physical location; it just have to be where you feel most loved. Popstop's chart - #1 (2 weeks) - July 2010

So, you might remember that I diversified this list by only one song per artist (There are a couple cheats later, but it mostly hold true.) So, for those artist that might have had an additional song in the top 200 without this rule. I will be noting them in the tables. #175 - Head Over Heels - Tears For Fears | 1985 | It's hard to be a man when there's a girl in your headTears For Fears had two chart-topping hits during the summer of 1985. This was the follow-up to them. It made the top 5. In contrast to the earlier singles, this song is more of a simple love song - kinda. There's a number of interpretations to this song, but I feel that it's more of an infatuation song - the lead singer wants to be alone with the object of his affection, but she "keeps her distance" and wastes his time. He''s intimidated by her - finding it hard to be a man, and with closing lyrics like "one little boy, one little man" so it's suspect as to how well this relationship will develop - he's possibly not mature enough to handle her.
#174 - Connection - Elastica | 1995 | Another heart has made the gradeA more obscure song on this countdown, this was their biggest hit - sidling up to #53 on the Billboard chart. Laden with synthesizers, lead singer Justine Frischmann kind of talk-sings her way through the song about falling in love.
| |
#173 - Float On - Modest Mouse | 2004 | Bad news comes don't you worry when it landsThis song comes from a long tradition of not letting the world get you down. A Jamaican scam artist cheated you? No problem - now you know not to fall for that again. You and a friend both got fired - something better will come along, and we'll all just float on. This song hit during high school when my interest in alternative rock was at its peak. You'll see a moderate influence of that as we go up the chart. Popstop's chart - #1 (3 weeks) - July 2004
#172- Walk This Way - Run-DMC/Aerosmith | 1986 | And I gave the girl just a little kiss! Like this.Today, we think nothing of mixing rap with other genres, but this combination was a breakthrough and made it an instant classic. The fact that both parties chose to work together and build this mash-up of styles is a testament to their adventurousness. For me personally, I enjoy the song's sense of fun and playfulness - the chemistry these two groups had with each other is palpable.
#171 - Beautiful - Christina Aguilera | 2003 | Now and then I get insecure from all the pain. I'm so ashamed.Hm, I'm surprised I ranked Beautiful this low. This song couldn't have been better timed for me personally, as I was just starting to struggle deciphering my sexual identity when it came out. Songs like these feel like a dime a dozen anymore - Perfect by Pink; Firework by Katy; All About That Bass - but from my experience, this type of selfie pop serves a purpose. Popstop's chart - #1 (1 week) - January 2003Additional Top songs: Candyman - #1 (1 week) - January 2007

It's a mostly recent collection of songs today!
#170 - All Mixed Up - 311 | 1997 | You got to trust your instinct. And let go of regret.Probably an appropos name for a band that mixes different genres to keep their sound - 311 does a little bit of rock, some reggae, and hip-hop, and blends it all together in this upbeat song about being dazed and confused. They have another great song from this same album called "Down," that was a bit heavier rocking, but this one wins out because it is more fun to sing. :)
#169 - It Hasn't Been Long Enough - Eric Hutchinson | 2008 | A feeling that we're more than doomed is creeping up insideIf you've heard of Eric Hutchinson, it's probably because of his jam "Rock And Roll," which my son at the time called "The Bunny Song" likely because it sounded so bouncy. But this heartbreaking downer of a song in which Eric, post-breakup has still not recovered, resonated more deeply with me. It was a friend of mine going to school in the DC area, who discovered Eric for me. At that time, he was less known than he is now - he was touring small venues then, but today, he opens for Kelly Clarkson. Popstop's Chart - #1 (5 weeks) - March-April 2008
| |
#168 - Bubble Butt - Major Lazer [et al] | 2013
#167 - Say Hey (I Love You) - Michael Franti & Spearhead | 2008 | My mama told me don't lose you cause the best luck I had was you. What kind of cold-hearted bitch wouldn't love such a happy, joyful song? There just aren;t enough songs out there that are as effusive with their love as this one. This song peaked early on my chart - it would be another year before it would peak on the Billboard chart, but I have to say I still wasn't sick of it a year later! Popstop's chart - #1 (4 weeks) - September 2008
#166 - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson | 2012 | You know I dream in colorKelly is one of the biggest hitmakers on my personal chart - charting more top fives than just about anyone, but none of her songs made as huge an impact as this one. No one does overcoming adversity better than Kelly, and Kelly belts this out with the fervor of Envoirment at a Leona Lewis concert. It had the bad luck to hit when a number of songs were blowing up at the same time, so it only got one week at the top, but then lingered in the top five for weeks on end. Popstop's chart - #1 (1 week) - February 2012Additional Top songs: My Life Would Suck Without You - #1 (4 weeks) - January - February 2009
