Maybe my joke guess of 4 million from the weekend isn't a joke after all. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298704Wednesday, November 25, 2015 25 HEADING DUE NORTH FROM 3MAnother day, another updated Adele projection. As of Wednesday morning, our numbers crunchers have increased first-week estimates for 25 to 3.1-3.3m albums, 3.2-3.4m SPS. This is surreal. Meanwhile, she’s performing “Million Years Ago” on The Today Show as this item is being typed. Other superstar artists should note - performing different tracks during the initial promotion period is an incredibly effective strategy. It makes every appearance unique so ppl will tune in - it's a different twist on the 'promo' single approach. It wouldn't always work though. For someone like Adele, whose single is already everywhere, and whose album is one people would already check out, this works to get people from 'on the fence' to buying it. For others, getting the first single to penetrate audiences is the tough task and often it needs repeat exposure before people take notice.

It's selling this well because it's Adele, not because she's performing different songs on different shows.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6777115/adele-25-sales-week-us-millionAdele's '25' Sales Up to 2.8 Million in U.S., Headed for 3 Million Debut WeekBy Keith Caulfield | November 25, 2015 1:57 PM EST Adele’s 25 album sales continue to grow ever larger, according to Nielsen Music. After processing initial sales reports through Nov. 24, the set has sold at least 2.8 million copies in the U.S. Further, of that figure, 1.45 million are digital albums -- by far a record haul for a digital set. 25 has already surpassed the single-week album sales record (since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991), previously held by *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, when it debuted with 2,416,000 in the week ending March 26, 2000. And yet, the tracking week still isn’t over! There are slightly more than two days left in the sales tracking week to be tabulated (as it ends at the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 26). Currently, industry forecasters suggest the album could finish the week with 3 million sold. Billboard is scheduled to report 25's debut week sales on Sunday, Nov. 29, once Nielsen has finished processing its weekly data. 25 was released on Nov. 20 through XL/Columbia Records. It is Adele’s third studio album, and follows her blockbuster 21 set, which spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold 11.2 million copies in the U.S. (It is presumed that 25 will debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Dec. 12, with its top 10 scheduled to be announced on Nov. 29. In related news, 25 mania is pumping a big gain for 21, which may jump back into the Billboard 200’s top 10 for the first time in two-and-a-half years.) 25’s download haul is already more than the former single-week download record-holder: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 662,000 digital copies in its first week (ending May 29, 2011). (Billboard earlier reported that industry sources said 25 sold 900,000 downloads through the iTunes Store alone on its first day.) Nielsen Music began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. Prior to 1991, there was no authoritative music sales tracking service in the U.S, thus it was mostly unknown how many copies of an album or song/single were sold in a single week.

It is "presumed" it will debut at #1. LOL Love that word. It implies it is not guaranteed. You never know. Rihanna could drop her album tonight. Besides, journalists tend to avoid using certain terms, even in obvious situations like this.

A) What the heck is "Buzz Angle Music" and where did it come from and how does it seem to be scooping everyone on sales data?
B) Whether it's due to competition from HDD and "Buzz Angle Music" or just a desire to milk the Adele thing, I'm *LOVING* the fact that Billboard is sharing actual intraweek sales data. I can't remember the last time an intraweek Keith Caulfield article actually had useful information in it. Can this please not stop once Adelemania subsides?
C) The full album promo performances idea is brilliant (Bieber did a variation of it by performing album tracks on the Today Show), but it really requires a special level of fan support and a special level of album consistency to pull off.

For others, getting the first single to penetrate audiences is the tough task and often it needs repeat exposure before people take notice. Exactly - that's why I noted 'superstar' - it would have to be a highly anticipated release with an established main single - so Taylor could've done it because SIO was already a huge hit, same with Katy ('Roar'), as noted Biebs used a similar approach. This approach would only work for a very limited set of artists - likely ones who are following a massive previous release and hope to push the non-core fans to purchase project sooner than after 2 or 3 singers. It also would have to be an artist who's interesting enough to offer different takes during interviews. But without a smash single, it won't work. I just think it's added so much more to ADELE's interviews that each one isn't going to be a 'Hello' performance.

First she smashes the digital singles record, now she smashes the albums record... Can she get anymore massive? I hope she performs single #2 at the Grammys and keeps showing everyone up. It's so refreshing to see someone with just pure talent murdering it.

A) What the heck is "Buzz Angle Music" and where did it come from and how does it seem to be scooping everyone on sales data? It's a daily chart service that launched alongside the first Global Release Day in July; the only place I ever heard about it before now was Hypebot ( news story / Q&A).

So:
Day 1: 900k+ Day 2: 1.9 million Day 3: 2.3 million (+400k) Day 4: 2.56 million (+260k) Day 5: 2.8 million (+240k)
Based on that, it looks likely it'll do 3.1 million+ first week (Day 6 will include The Today Show performance which should help slow the fall in sales). Just insane!

Wild sales. Remember we also have Black Friday. Wonder if places like Amazon are going to discount the album.
I wonder if the album will go Diamond.

I'm pretty sure it was just a joke. I mean, I don't feel like it's downplaying other artists. It's not like she's snatching wigs for real you know. People are just finding ways to describe how incredible Adele's achievements are right now and having fun with it.
GREAT NUMBERS! I still can't believe how great she is doing.

^Yup. Lazy labels. A Christmas album is an easy buck. Christmas albums are cheap af to record. 99% of the songs that end up on them are public domain. I'm surprised more labels don't try digital exclusive Christmas tracks just for a quick buck

It's so refreshing to see someone with just pure talent murdering it. That's the thing, it's almost too good to be true, like this gigantic bubble is going to burst sometime. It'll be interesting to see how much she sells for the rest of the year, if she can pull of more 1 mil+ weeks. It seems like a total of 5 mil is a done deal, but can she make it to 6, 7 mil? It would be truly unprecedented.

I can't imagine how she's feeling right now. She's probably overwhelmed, but terrified at the same time. Like, I couldn't imagine the pressure she will be under with her next album.

I like Buzz Angle's digital % report, but I find it hard to believe that Enya's DSI had "0%" digital. Actually I thought DSI would benefit a little more from 25 since Enya appeals to at least part of the demo.

It's no worse than the pressure she felt recording this during 21. If anything, that was worse. Everyone knew this album was going to open with 1 million regardless. It was just how high it could really go in these last few weeks.

It would be so incredible if she managed to get 19, 21, and 25 all in the Top 10. 25 (obviously!) and 21 are happening. It will be CLOSE with 19.

That means sales increased by 25% on Wednesday, putting its sales figure at 3.1 million:
Day 1: 900k+ Day 2: 1.9 million Day 3: 2.3 million (+400k) Day 4: 2.56 million (+260k) Day 5: 2.8 million (+240k) Day 6: 3.1 million (+300k)
It looks like it'll beat Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" record at this rate. Hopefully the early black friday sales will help the album sell a bucketload today.
