I like Shakira but do people in the US even know her songs? I think I can name 3 songs in total. There have been so many unmemorable Superbowl performances that what matters most is that she puts on a good show. She's has a couple of massive hits. Recently, Chantaje was huge worldwide. It didn't do much on US radio, but it was a hit on streaming. Chantaje has 2.4B views on YouTube atm. Waka Waka was the worldcup anthem and also a very big hit that US radio ignored, but streaming wise it was massive. Then there's the big US hits (Whenever Wherever, Hips Don't Lie, Underneath Your Clothes, La Tortura). She can easily come up with an effective setlist. If Beyonce joins her for "beautiful Liar" then she'll likely sing a song on her own also. She'll do fine. Also, if she's getting the halftime show, you know she will debut a new song. I would not be surprised if the song was a duet with a very big star.

There is definitely still high demand for Shakira I’m not going to argue with that. I enjoyed El Dorado and her music still connects with people. However, even though her last tour was a huge success it also felt uninspired. I mean, if you don’t have the greatest voice you need to have something else to offer and put on a show. She didn’t do that with the El Dorado tour. She had no dancers. Nothing to distract the audience.
I’m team Shakira and have been for years. I just hope she puts in the work if she’s going to do the halftime.

El Dorado Tour was her label dragging her away from her kids. What was new from that tour was the production of the show. Fans were impressed by the production, but Shakira's part was very similar because she didn't want to spend too much time rehearsing and away from her kids. I do get the feeling that if she signs on to do the halftime show that she will feel the weight of the event and try to be at her most creative.

Here's a video of 100,000 fans singing Antologia at Azteca stadium. That song wasn't even a big hit when it was released in 1997, yet fans know every word of that song by heart:

Every few years this "Shakira is doing the super bowl" rumor pops up in Latin media. I'll believe it when I see it.
She hasn't had a mainstream US hit in 5 years, and before that she had 2 songs that barely scraped the top 40 in 2010. She has no legacy to speak of in the US. The odds of her getting the show are close to zero.

She went on to sellout her dates, pure arenas and stadiums. She didn’t even do any promo for her tour. She just announced it on social media. In other years we get Super Bowl rumors from fans, never strong rumors from e! & glamour about her being spotted with NFL executives weeks before the announcement. It’s even more surprising because it’s very difficult to get her to leave Spain. She’ll keep surprising you because you always undervalue her. Likely because you don’t know all that much about her outside of her English materiel.

Even though it's been years since she's had a hit song on English radio, her name recognition is quite strong - and her stint on The Voice reinforced this. She's also had enough hits to fill a Halftime show. If, and it's a big if, the NFL is interested in reaching out to the Latinx audience, I wouldn't be surprised if Shakira is near the top of their list.

And I'm not sure why you think there was no promo for her tour, they literally had massive subway ads in major metros advertising her shows. What do you think tour promo is?

And I'm not sure why you think there was no promo for her tour, they literally had massive subway ads in major metros advertising her shows. What do you think tour promo is? The label of course spends money on her. They always do. What I meant is that Shakira herself did nothing to promote the tour. They knew what the demand was still like, so they spent plenty on it. Fans said it was the best production of all her tours. It’s Shakira that didn’t do much. If you know so much, you’d know it’s never a good idea to underestimate her. You undervalue her, her label knows her value. If you're wondering where this is all leading, they want to try to book stadiums in the US. For "The Sun Comes Out World Tour" they looked into booking stadiums in the US: A stadium in Miami (don't remember the name of it), dodgers stadium in LA & AT&T Stadium in Texas. They got the idea when the Selena tribute concert at Reliant Stadium in Houston soldout. Since then they've been trying to book stadiums for Shakira in Latin hot spots in the US. If she does, she could then do a complete stadium tour. She'd do stadiums in the US, Latin America and select cities in Europe. She's already done stadium shows in various parts of Europe (Greece, Turkey, Netherlands, Spain). That's their end goal if she has another big hit in the US. This is another reason why the superbowl makes sense.

Roc Nation should do a Latin extravaganza for the Superbowl, with Shakira leading the way. Invite other Latin artists and celebrate latin music in the capital of Latin America, Miami.

The odds of her getting the show are close to zero. Just a 23 year olds point of view (who works with kids daily) but I’d say anytime I’d ever sing a lil hips don’t lie people knew the song. That thing is massive Waka waka didn’t perform in the US like it did worldwide chartwise but again when I sing a lil of that song everyone seems to know what it is. Also my kids at work love doing that song for just dance and majority are already familiar with it Some kids also know her as having the song from zootopia I think shakira just doesn’t have the traditional pop legacy and instead has a more unique position. I think her aesthetic and performance style + hips don’t lie is what the public remembers from her over other pop hits like whenever, wherever & she wolf

There is literally no way the NFL would allow an overtly anti-Trump performance to happen. It's about as likely as having Colin Kaepernick sing the national anthem.

I don't live in the US but I find it hard to believe that Americans don't 'know' Shakira. An average NFL fan might struggle to name a song of hers but they have definitely heard of her and know her profession lol
Plus I'm sure the promoters of the halftime show won't mind having the rest of the world (where she's an undisputable legend) glued on their screens waiting for her performance to be uploaded on youtube.

It’s probably just a short video that she’ll show before Waka waka where she mentions the immigrant children. Gaga also wanted to do an anti trump performance but ended up just making a brief statement in the beginning.

Its #5 now! People that are not familiar with Shakira must wonder if something happened to her. Such an old video being top 5 is unbelievable. It passed “Señorita!”
She really needs to release something new.
