Here is what I don't get. This song has multiple remixes. That shouldn't count in terms of airplay to remain on top. It's streaming that is keeping it on top. It's already cratering down the airplay charts towards #20, but user generated videos on YouTube are keeping the song (even gaining) about 20%+ above the #2 song. Adding remixes on a weekly basis now isn't hurting as well. The Hot 100 formula makes airplay almost a non-factor because there's a theoretical limit as to what max airplay impressions would be at. There's no such maximum for streaming, so for most of the weeks on top (all but maybe one or two), OTR would have been #1 if radio didn't spin it a single time. The fact the song has dominated so much in weeks 14-17 is really curious. Obviously Lil Nas X has turned the Billboard screws, using their formula and remixes to obtain a maximum number of points. Is that bad? Probably not because I would do the same thing in that spot and had probably the most coveted Billboard record in reach. Nas was even a member of ATRL (apparently) and even chimed in on their Hot 100 threads, so we're talking about someone who is a huge fan of the charts and their history. It's actually pretty exciting. I could see the song on top for a handful of weeks yet unless there's a monster release by a A+ artist like Adele in the next month. He will be a one hit wonder. It's just sad what passes as music now a days. It's also sad that the Billboard has a formula that uses streaming more than anything else. I get that is the "future", but when I look at MB and see how many stations will play the same songs 5-10 times a day, that should count for something. Besides, who can listen to the same song over and over again?
It's more odd that twice in 3 years a song has this type of run on the BB Hot 100.

Said every previous generation about the current generation's music since probably the start of music.

discrediting music that you don't particularly like as invalid or lesser than is one of my pet peeves - just say you don't like it and go. there's no need to tear down artists/songs/genres that you don't like. it's valid just like any song or artist that came before it. it's art and a consumable product at the same time, it's subjective and there are no standards to what music should sound like. Billboard measures revenue and popularity - and streaming isn't the future anymore - its the present.

A comment full of ignorance.

Still supporting this one but in hindsight it's pretty crazy to look back at the early debates for this haha. I'm still not sure if I personally have an opinion on if this is country or not but I do genuinely enjoy this song regardless.
Even in my own circle, the reactions to this song were varied but kinda telling. My friend who likes roughly 4~ country songs loves this one whereas my singular friend who genuinely likes the genre and listens to it often (Although generally older ones so take this somewhat weaker haha) hates this song. I haven't been able to get the exact reason out of him but I'd bet decent money it's either his immediate aversion to rap or his distaste for it being called country. It's honestly maybe even plausibly considered a comedy song tbh, it's clearly partially a jest and it's not really a song that intends to tell a story more than the extrinsic value of it.
Who knows haha? Maybe in three years we'll all have finally come to a verdict or by then another 7 songs could provide this same debate.

On the Dan LeBatard show, Billy Ray Cyrus was interviewed and he said if OTR made 17 weeks on top, he was retiring from music. I’m not really sure he was still in the music business anyhow, but it appears that Monday is the announcement date for their record-breaking 17th week. He’s enjoying this run more than LNX even is.

His latest album just came out two months ago and he's been consistently putting out new records every few years since he debuted in the early 90s. He just isn't a mainstream act anymore and doesn't chart on country radio. Pretty sure I've also heard him tease retiring from music at least a few times over the past 10 years and he hasn't done it yet, so we'll see. I don't think he'll ever fully get out of the business because it's obvious he enjoys what he does, but he also definitely doesn't need to keep working at this point either, lol.

Congratulations to Billie Eilish for having the new #1 Hot 100 hit with Bad Guy. Wrong thread He didn't really need to bump this thread for that, but it did dethrone "Old Town Road" so its not unrelated.

Congratulations to Billie Eilish for having the new #1 Hot 100 hit with Bad Guy. Wrong thread The only reason I posted that here was the fact that a lot of the country posters do not venture much outside the country forum. That's why it got posted here.
