Read the billboard article. Merch redeemable albums were not included in the 450k figure. I'm really starting to think all artist are delusional and are pulling "every trick in the book". Every big artist has merch, has pre-orders, gives interviews when the album drops... Drake even had his f**king face stamped on EVERY SINGLE PLAYLIST on Spotify. I wish Taylor was pulling "every trick in the book", some people really don't know what they are talking about. But whatever helps you sleep at night That's a lazy comparison. Ed Sheeran just had placements in over 800 Spotify playlists for his No. 6 collaborations project. Way more placements than Drake had for Scorpion. I don't remember him getting any backlash for that kind of massive promotion. Also, Drake's face was on a lot of those playlists but A LOT of those playlists didn't contain any actual Drake songs and because of the backlash it got, Spotify quickly ended it. It barely lasted two days before it ended. Drake didn't need that promo from Spotify. He was always gonna do massive streaming numbers with Scorpion. Lastly, Drake has NEVER used bundles for any of his albums. Drake doesn't even do interviews. His "promotion" is posting about it once on Instagram and moving on. Compare the lengths Taylor goes to to promote/boost her first week album sale figures with other artists but don't bring Drake into it because their approaches are way too different.

I'm not giving Ed or Drake any backlash. I'm just making comparisons to defend Taylor against your backlash. I don't want to sound tone deaf, like I'm defending her no matter what. But oh boy, thought I'd never see the day that promoting your entire body of work was seen as something bad The only conclusion I can draw is that you don't even know anything about what you're talking about. You're just bashing her for the pleasure of it.

The digital album is part of the purchase and sent to your email address during checkout and in the case of buying say the package of stickers before the album came out the album is then delivered on release day thus creating a "pre-order"

deepston I'm not attacking Taylor or you. I've said many times this very week that I want Taylor to do massive figures. I've said that while I don't think she'll move a million SPS units in her debut week, I hope she somehow manages to. I've also said that Lover has grown on me and is fast becoming my favorite post-country Taylor album. I'm not a hater. I don't hate Taylor. We're just having an open dialogue. I never said there was anything wrong with her promoting her album or going all out to garner as much support from her fans as she could for her debut week. Artists are meant to do that. The only thing I pointed out and tried to make a note of was that bundles have to have a limit. This doesn't even have to do with Taylor in particular because I've spoken about it several times this year. Right now, Billboard is working on a limit for counting bundles on their weekly album chart or if they should even be included at all. There's a reason for that.

You might choose not to redeem it and it won't count as one sale.

but don't bring Drake into it Don't worry. If no one else does, you will. :kii: jk I find the discussion on bundles interesting and tbh, it's one thing I can't really decide where I fall on. It's easy to take a stance when you're comparing straight up album sales (physical or digital) to anything else (ie, a super cheap new release a la Born This Way on amazon), but when streaming is added into the mix, both subscriber-based/paid streaming and free streams, then it murkies the water a bit - and the water is already muddy as it is. I'm someone who thinks the Hot 100 should count everything if its purpose is to measure popularity and song consumption. By that, I mean radio, streaming (paid and free), downloads, etc, but also other less traditional forms such as television advertisements, placement in box office movies, etc. Of course, duration of the placement would matter (bringing in the 30-second discussion again) but I don't think there's really much difference between hearing a song during a pivotal point in a film and hearing it on the radio. Yet, only radio audience counts toward the Hot 100. For the album chart, it gets stickier for me, and part of it is how the album chart and Hot 100 are connected: streams. Streams count toward both - which I understand. But I detest how album streams count for both but album sales don't. I fully understand why but it's strange to me that someone who streams a new album on whatever platform they choose contributes to both charts whereas someone who purchases an album doesn't. Granted, Billboard's tracking can only reach so far obviously but I find that the biggest weakness of the charts right now. Adele can drop an album, sell a million copies, and not have a single showing on the Hot 100 whereas Drake can drop an album, receive a streaming equivalent of 500K and have every track on the album make the Hot 100. Anyway, my point is, since the Billboard 200 counts free streams among other methods of album popularity, I don't think I really see an issue in bundles. I guess it really comes down to how albums redeemed from these bundles are weighted. Maybe it should involve the cost of the item the album is bundled with, even though there isn't necessarily a cost associated with it, should it therefore count as "free" and therefore ineligible as per the $3.49 rule? Is the $3.49 rule still in place? If so, I'd find that much more of an issue in the face of bundles being eligible.

You may be thinking of concert tickets What the Taylor Swift website says now: "If this item is purchased, on date of purchase a digital Standard Edition copy of Taylor Swift's album "Lover" will be sent to the e-mail address supplied during checkout." Prior to release date that phrase said 'on release day' rather than 'day of purchase'. Not a code that you have to redeem, you get the actual album - why? because that is part of the purchase.

Why wouldn't/aren't the merch bundles not counted yet?
If people are redeeming them now, theoretically, they should be submitted to Soundscan as they are redeemed.

Maybe Billboard will clarify? All I know is, I've seen albums in recent years with "record numbers" of pre-orders only to have the final weekly tally be oddly underwhelming considering how high the pre-orders number was. That's why I pay little attention to pre-order numbers because they seem to be a set up for disappointment.

1. I bought a water bottle from Taylor's website. 2. I got a confirmation email and there's a "download" link to redeem / get my copy of the album. 3. I can download TEN COPIES of the album from that ONE purchase (not a typo).
FYI, I have 3/10 copies left.... :)

I think it's a thing for some Republic artists.

I'm not sure if those count as 10 different copies if they're under 1 link / 1 purchase code. I think the reason they do that is if you want to have it on multiple devices or switch out your iTunes account, you still have X amount of codes left like you would have the CD stowed away somewhere.

kimberly didn't Taylor once have a deal with Papa John's for her Red album? What did that have to do with the music? I'm not a big fan so I don't remember this BUT looking it up now, I see that people had the option to CHOOSE to get the album+pizza bundle (more expensive than just getting the pizza, but cheaper than buying both separately), and her face was put on pizza boxes. That is clearly very much different than slapping on an album redemption code on all Redbull sales

If she really wanted to pull all stops and break the million she could have done a tour bundle. Her last tour was the highest grossing tour in U.S. history so those bundle numbers would have been insane. I actually thought she was going to, tbh.

It should only count as 1 seeing as you only purchased it once, but I don't know with Billboard these days.

She can always use this tactic later on down the line, it doesn't have to be first week.

Post Malone drops his album September 6th I saw this on Twitter and on the Post Malone subreddit, pretty sure he announced it at his concert today. Also he did a duet with Tyler Joseph covering Oasis's "Don't Look Back In Anger".

There is a Billboard 200 thread and a Hits thread for Taylor's album.
Would be nice to see Senorita at #1.
