Well Taylor is clearly the biggest female country act out at the moment and deserves her place among the nominations just as much as any of the other females listed. Because she currently is releasing her CD? Other than that, I dont see how she is the "biggest female country act". She is just in the news alot right now.

"I'd pay almost any amount of money to hear Martina "Pipes" McBride sing a song about giving up on your dreams and staying in bed all day feeling sorry for yourself, just to break up her inspirational monotony"
Lol, that totally cracked me up! :)

EW.com review of the show: You know, you're really starting to get on my nerves. There was no need to bold what the reviewer said about Taylor's performance. We get it. You like Carrie. You don't like Taylor.

CMA was the #1 tv show Wednesday night:
The “CMAs” averaged a 5.0 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights.
The show was down 9 percent from last year’s 5.4, though that’s hardly surprise. Just about everything, from dramas to sitcoms to awards shows, have seen ratings slip this year.

Thanks for pointing that out, since I had missed that (next time, PM notification would be preferred). A board vacation will hopefully diminish his predilection for repeating himself on certain points. And dcowboy77, a link would have been useful. Here is ratings talk from the NY Times TV Decoder blog:

For those that missed it, CMT will be rebroadcasting it in the near future, I forget the exact date but it was announced yesterday. Also, the ratings were very good for ABC. www.zap2it.com/tv/ratings/zap-ratings111208,0,483972.story

Nov. 12, 2008 | 11:00 PM ESTShania Twain Surprises Nashville at the CMAs"I'm so glad she's here tonight," Martina McBride raves about the star, who received a standing ovation By Eileen Finan, Brian Orloff and Kay West The Country Music Association promised a major surprise in the lead up to Wednesday's CMA Awards – and it came at the tail-end of the three-hour telecast: Shania Twain presented the final honor of the night – entertainer of the year – to Kenny Chesney. "You look really good tonight!" he said as he took the trophy in his hands. Twain, wearing a low-cut Missoni gown, had walked out to a standing ovation. "It's good to see all of you too," she told the crowd Wednesday at Nashville's Sommet Center. "I hope to be seeing a lot more of you." Twain, 43, won the coveted entertainer of the year award in 1999, and was last at the CMA awards in 2004. PEOPLE first reported that Twain was expected at the ceremony on Wednesday. Her presence marked the singer's first public appearance since announcing her separation from husband Robert "Mutt" Lange in May. A Warm WelcomeOnce Twain arrived at the ceremony, the stars were buzzing. "Well, I hear she's single," Jimmy Wayne told PEOPLE. "Maybe I'll be able to run into her!" Former tourmate John Michael Montgomery sent his best wishes to the singer, telling PEOPLE, "I just hate the fact that she went through her trials and tribulations, and I hope that she comes back as strong as ever. If she puts her mind to it, you ain't going to stop her." New artist of the year nominee James Otto, who also toured with Twain, praised her crossover appeal. "She opened up country music to so many people who had never listened to it before," he told PEOPLE. "She really made a mark on country music." Martina McBride summed up everybody's excitement, telling PEOPLE, "I'm so glad she's here tonight." People.com
November 13, 2008 Kenny Chesney: I Flirted With Shania!Country star Kenny Chesney knows a thing or two about hooking up — and even more about breaking up — in the spotlight, having met, married and split from actress Renée Zellweger in less than nine months in 2005. So it's no surprise that he'd have some things to say to fellow country superstar Shania Twain to help her get over her break from ex-husband Mutt Lange. "I flirted with her!" he joked at the Country Music Awards in Nashville on Wednesday night, where he was awarded the Entertainer of the Year award by Shania, making her first public appearance since splitting from Mutt in May. In all seriousness, Kenny did have this to share about having your love life be the stuff headlines are made of: "Relationships are hard anyway — for anybody — but it's even tougher when your life is a spectator sport." It's been a rough few months for Shania, who saw her marriage of 15 years crumble amid charges of infidelity with the couple's longtime personal assistant. "She's an amazing artist. She can do anything she wants to do," said Kenny. "Great songs are the key." By Valerie NomeOK! Magazine

I thought Brad and Carrie did an amazing job as hosts-- and Carrie was so much more comfortable then I thought she would be. I thought she would be really nervous doing this the first time- but she shined. Brad was funny and loveable as always.
Best Performances of the Night:
Carrie Underwood, hands down. She made me cry-- and she didn't need any props or hoopla to give a breathtaking performance.
Miranda Lambert: Again, simplicity Reigned--- she gave a lovely, emotional performance just sitting on her chair with her guitar. Great song too.
Darius Rucker: amazing! His voice soars and boy is he good live! I see great things for him.
Kid Rock: very entertaining.. no matter what you think of him-- he brings it every night. :)
Brad Paisely: Waiting on a Woman was such a nice song- love it.
Lady Antebellum: very strong debut performance. They sounded as good live as on their cd.

Shania avoided the press last night. It was probably a good thing. Shania could've run into the WKRN entertainment reporter who said the following to Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman on the red carpet: The major faux paus of the evening goes to their (WKRN) entertainment reporter who was interviewing Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman, and to Keith specifically about playing with Brad Paisley on stage tonight (for the show opener), he actually said, “So this will be the first time you’ve played with him sober?“
Both Urban and Kidman looked mortified, as he tried to backtrack out of his words.
After the highly publicized time that Urban spent in drug and alcohol rehab, what a disrespectful, appalling thing to say. Yikes.Source

Vocals are all subjective. Some may say Taylor can't sing worth a lick others may love her voice. 600,000 others. lol Anyways I remember people arguing with me last year saying that Female Vocalist Of The Year had much, much more to do with than who had the best or biggest voice. Even if Taylor doesn't have huge range that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the award. Female Vocalist Of The Year is supposed to encompass everything right? Well Taylor is clearly the biggest female country act out at the moment and deserves her place among the nominations just as much as any of the other females listed. I think Taylor and Carrie both share the spotlight equally right now. Taylor is just hiped up for the release of her album. To me the FVOTY award is mainly vocals, with sucess as more of a kicker. Carrie won in 2006 because she was one of the supirior vocailists in her category, and she had a huge year. Same thing happened these past 2 years. The reason I believe Taylor isn't winning is; she may be on top in terms of sucess right now, but she out of the five nominees is the least "talented" vocally. This is my stand on this, its more factual than opinionated. Nonetheless, Taylor delivered a nice performace last night. Carrie was by far the best followed by Miranda. Top 3 performances: 1: Carrie Underwood, She is just amazing, her emotions poored out throught the whole song. She sang beautifly with a tiny little crack in her falsetto in her last run, but due to her crying...I don't care....her emotions were the reason for the crack, not her vocals. Carrie was spot on, and blew me away as usuall. 2: Miranda Lambert, was great, her vocals were spot on...she looked great as well. She is definately one of the most underrated artists in country music. 3: Sugarland, Honestly if Jeniffer were solo, I would not be suprised if she won Female Vocalist...her vocals are spot an, and she also looked great. Christain was great too...he sounded awesome; and I think thats the most I've ever seen him sing. Worst.... 1: Kellie Pickler, I love her to death, and she looked great but she needs songs that fit her range...she practcally mumbled some of the lyrics, and strained so much for those high ones...She is much better off with slower ballads like "I Wonder." 2: Taylor Swift, very entertaining, and fun to watch...but she just isn't a vocalist. To me she is a song writer in which she writes incredible songs. She just doesnt deserve to be nominated in Female Vocalist, maybe in a few years....but to me she doesn't compare in any way to the Vocal talents like Martina, Miranda, Carrie, or Allison. Overall, I thought the show was great. I though Album of the Year was a little off, I would hav preferred Carrie, or Alan...but George is more than deserving, so no real complaints.

Personally I thought Kellie's performance was smoking hot. Even though she usually sings better than that in concert. I don't know she must have been nervous or something. I also like Miranda, Rucker, and surprisingly, Brad Paisleys performance.

CMA reception brings tears to Shania TwainOf course, it wasn't Shania's back that garnered immediate attention when she walked onstage in a low-cut Missoni gown to present the Entertainer of the Year award during Wednesday's CMA Awards. This marked her first public appearance since news spread of her divorce from her producer husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange. Shania — who hasn't released a studio album since Up! in 2002 — was moved to tears by the standing ovation her surprise appearance earned from the Sommet Center crowd. "She was floored by the reaction of the crowd," said her spokesman, Jason Owen. "It's probably one of the best nights she's had in Nashville." When Kenny Chesney took the stage to accept the award, he said out loud what was on the minds of many, including those who gasped in the pressroom. "You look really good tonight!" Kenny told her. Backstage, Kenny told reporters, "I flirted with her onstage." Shania and Kenny have gone through marital splits in the public eye. "Relationships are hard anyway, for anybody," Kenny said. "It's even tougher when it's a spectator sport. I wish her all the best really. I think she is obviously an amazing artist. It was really great to have her be a part of this night. I think she can do anything she wants." Earlier that night, Shania shared laughs and swapped stories in a dressing room with Reese Witherspoon, Martina McBride and Jennifer Nettles. After the show, she clearly had a great time at the Universal Music Group's party at its downtown headquarters, dancing and requesting songs by Pink and Kayne West. On Thursday, Shania boarded a plane for her home in Switzerland. www.tennessean.com/article/20081114/COLUMNIST0501/811140381From Taylor Swift's latest blog:"....But the real moment that brought on this wave of gratitude was when Shania Twain HERSELF walked up and introduced herself to me. Shania Twain, as in.. The reason I wanted to do this in the first place. Shania Twain, as in.. the most impressive and independent and confident and successful female artist to ever hit country music. She walked up to me and said she wanted to meet me and tell me I was doing a great job. She was so beautiful, guys. She really IS that beautiful. All the while, I was completely star struck. After she walked away, I realized I didn't have my camera. Then I cried."
