^Well I know I saw ads and banners for WTAT on sites like AllAccess, FMQB, etc, they did a music video, PCD kept pimping Missy Elliott on the song in every interview they did, I heard stuff on the radio multiple times advertising Doll Domination with the "new hit, Whatcha Think About That". What more could they really do for it? Granted they hadn't really gotten around to talk show performances yet, but those are only good for a little temporary boost, they don't determine whether or not a song will be a hit. When an album track like Bottle Pop (with zero promo) got to the top 50 on iTunes, and the real single can't even manage top 100, you know you've got the wrong single on your hands.
And yeah BB was technically an under performance, not a flop, but by Mariah's standards at that point it was pretty darn close to a flop. Plus it set the album back big time so that when they made the mistake of IBLULT, it completely messed up the whole era and ruined the album's sales. Madonna most certainly did have something prior to releasing GI2M, she had her biggest U.S hit in over 5 years, and had finally broken back through on U.S. radio. Now GI2M might have completely ruined all that. As far as Usher, again what more could they have done to get MM rolling? People didn't respond to it, so it wasn't a hit and the label just sat there waiting for months for some miracle to happen with it, and that's not how the music industry works. Labels have to keep on ticking and be ready to move on in an eye blink when handling stuff like this, and those 3 are prime examples of what happens when labels don't do that.

Okay. All I saw other than the video (which nowadays seems to me is becoming an obligatory promotional tool whose effectiveness is determined by how it's utilised) was the one smaller ad on the log-in screen at AllAccess.
And of course, being situated outside the States, I wouldn't have heard any radio advertising for DD. Why wasn't it mentioned that ads were being aired? Or that they were even doing interviews at all? It would have at least made it clear that the label was doing SOMETHING in terms of promotion.
Now, going slightly O/T to address the rest of your post, particularly about Madonna: sure, she was coming off a huge hit. Other than that, Warner didn't provide any promo specifically tailored to GI2M past the video (and it seems Madonna is not in the habit of going out and promoting her own career outside of touring nowadays). One ad on AllAccess that I know of (and Theo was displaying that for a while) but apart from that, no promo for GI2M.

How do they go from their WORST video to one of the BEST in 2 days! Wow! I really like the video. The one thing I would have changed is to have SNOW instead of rain in the desert, and it would have been A+

Pretty video, although a little weird in parts.
Anyway, this may just save the era for them, at least in terms of radio play.

Nice video, loads better than WTAT. I agree with slave4britney, it would have been really cool to have snow in the desert instead of rain.

I liked the video, there where some shots were we could see some of the other dolls and they looked STUNNING. I also loved the choreography near the end of the video when they were dancing in the rain. It really gave that last chorus a boost of energy. But once again, NICOLE GET'S TOO MUCH SCREENTIME. :@:@:@ >:(

Oooh I like it... kinda simple, but it works... I kind of like the desert concept now... still, I wanted a winter-ish video, but whatever...
Am I the only one that gets a BSB's 'Incomplete' vibe for the video?
Now just wait for this to be a big fat hit :)

That's one of the reasons I don't like this video, because you don't see enough of the other dolls. I know it's the same deal with the WTAT video but personally I find that more interesting to look at.

The dancing to a ballad is a bit off, but the video is beautifully shot

Honestly, I doubted this song before I had heard it. Now?
This is a SMASH. Honestly, I think it can make it to #1.

This song is awesome. The bridge and final chorus especially are my favourite parts. Love the video too. Just wish Melody had a few lines or something so it wasn't all Nicole.

I love the video! It's really beautiful. A huge improvement over the video for WTAT, for sure. The beginning of the video was a bit boring but the last minute or so was perfect with the interchanging shots between the girls and environments. They looked stunning, too.

This song is 100% Nicole vocally though. Aren't they all? WTAT isn't. It's 85% Nicole, 5% Melody and 10% Missy Elliott.

I love this song. It made me download the album. The video is just meh. I wish it had some concept and no dancing at all. Gosh, these girls can dance even to a military anthem.

Great video! It's nice to see the dolls dressing up as normal people too.
