You are correct jazzysoul, Pulse does not cater to the Beethoven audience, generally speaking.

And I'm sure Beethoven is turning over in his grave because Rihanna is having success now and he's not.

Also sorry but I don't hear Beethovens influence in the songs on the radio right now. Wocka Flocka and and Gucci Mane are not influenced by Beethoven OR Mozart

What exactly are we debating here, or rather you debating with yourself--her ability as a hitmaker or her standing in pop culture?

Is Mariah Carey still considered a top hitmaker and a major player in the current music scene?

This thread is a joke. I didn't know that irrelevancy was defined as "anything that is not current femme pop".

Mozart and Beethoven WISH they were as relevant as Rihanna and Beyonce Just like Mozart and Beethoven Seriously though, I agree that Mozart and Beethoven are irrelevant to the CURRENT Pop music scene. Obviously, they are a big part of musical *history* and will always be relevant to music as a whole, but they are irrelevant to today's current POP music scene.

The Greatest Love of All, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and I Will Always Love You alone are all better known than just about any Mariah song except for maybe All I Want For Christmas. Now that's a fact. Nah. I'd be willing to bet that if you randomly stopped people on the street and asked them to name a few songs from both Mariah and Whitney, they'd have an easier time with Mariah than Whitney. 'We Belong Together', 'Touch My Body', 'Fantasy', 'Hero', 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', 'Obsessed' - anyone who even sporadically listens to pop or R&B would know those songs. Whitney definitely has a few memorable songs, but not as many as Mariah. Also, the younger generations are familiar with Mariah because of 'WBT', 'TMB', 'O' and 'AIWFCIY'. On the other hand, Whitney hasn't had a hit single in over a decade, and I'd say there's a good chance that most teens and pre-teens would be hard-pressed to list even one Whitney Houston song. Which is exactly why an 8 year old girl sang GREATEST LOVE OF ALL with Whitney at her concert last week, as Whitney is her idol? Or the fact that a 17 year old girl sang I HAVE NOTHING with her last month in Australia? Or all the youtube videos I've seen of 3 and 4 year old toddlers singing I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU? I really could go on and on, don't doubt Whitney's impact on the younger generation with her classics, boo. Onto the original question, I would say Mariah is relevant as she did have a hit with Obsessed last year. It'll be interesting to see how her next single and album will play out, then that'll be the real answer.

Hero is probably Mariah's most covered song. Anyone who doesn't think it's a classic is insane. Mary Ann Acevedo Well, it does mean something if even MARY ANN AVOCADO covered it...

Mariah should be relevant long after she stops producing hits.
Her catalog is deep enough that her fans will remember the music for at least the next generation

Hero is probably Mariah's most covered song. Anyone who doesn't think it's a classic is insane. The X Factor Finalists Il Divo All that means is that Simon Cowell likes the song Hero.

If we're defining relevance as shaping and influencing the current music scene, then no Mariah is not relevant. Her influence (as minuscule as it is) lies in the 90s by making it okay for white acts to collaborate with rappers. She hasn't done anything transitional since then. @ the Mozart and Beysus analogies. @ someone saying AIWFC and IWALY being on the same scale of popularity. IWALY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> clearly Still @ the Mozart comparison.

Mariah's song is a modern Christmas classic that will go down in history. Whitney's cover is very popular and very well-known, and it may stick around after her time, but MC being tied to the holiday will keep it coming 'round each year until the earth is swallowed in blackness and everyone becomes dust.

I don't think you can assume that Mariah's song will always be a Christmas classic forever and always from now on. There are any number of Christmas songs that used to be considered "classics" that you rarely ever hear anymore at Christmas time for whatever reason. Only time will tell if AIWFCIY will still be remembered decades or even centuries from now.

^Christmas classic are Christmas classics forever.
Bing's "White Christmas" and Judy's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" would be perfect examples.

I never said relevance equated to influence. MooMoo doesn't stand a chance. The only time AIWFC will be played is during the holidays, while IWALY will be getting played year round.

Only time will tell if AIWFCIY will still be remembered decades or even centuries from now. It has aged sixteen years, triumphantly winning over more listeners in & out of every passing Christmas season and has proved to be extremely durable during Mariah's commercial shortcomings. I'd say time has told all it had to. The only time AIWFC will be played is during the holidays, while IWALY will be getting played year round. And yet I still come across AIWFC on the radio dial more frequently. What's that about?
