Like I said, you had to be old enough to have been there. The song was HUGE. Keyword: was. Just because it was a huge song doesn't mean that kids listening to Justin Bieber are going to be familiar with it. I'm not trying to hate on the song, IWALY is one of my all-time favorite ballads. I'm just trying to be realistic. It seems to me as though people are confusing popularity/familiarity with success. They are not always equivalents. Maybe kids who listen to Justin Bieber should expand their musical horizons a little more? A lot of older music is very worthwhile to listen to, even if so called "old people" were responsible for it.

Whether or not the youth of America's listening habits are up to par does not correspond with this thread's topic.

How silly of me to underestimate the competitiveness of the holiday songs charts. :o MOVE OVER Hot 100, a new sheriff is in town! :o How much more clearer can we get that AIWFCIY is a HOLIDAY song, so of course around the holidays it's going to get madd airplay and itunes sales? Just like all other popular Holiday songs? I mean, seriously. LOL That's like saying IWALY is the biggest soundtrack single of all time and AIWFCIY is not. That was exactly my point. ;) Of course IWALY is going to get played year round and AIWFC isn't. Who the f**k plays Christmas music in June or July? And yes, IWALY was definitely HUGE back when it was released, and about half of those things Human Nature listed occurred over 10 years ago. Both are huge and both are relevant. There's definitely no denying that. I just thought his arguments were silly beyond belief.

AIWFCIY is a huge Christmas song, but it will never be on IWALY's level. Get real lambs. I don't need to be brought to reality because I am not deluded and I deserve to be addressed specifically as I am perfectly capable of assuming a stance without having my efforts supressed by any affiliation you desire to brand me with. I'm an adult, thank you. I beg to differ; though if we're going to aim below the belt, I suggest you think twice. Here you are again, heedlessly blurting out bullets like you're on the brink of insanity and disregarding the gist of what I had written. Just as my efforts have gone unnoticed, your bullets of no consequence to me. Nevermind how outlandish it is to cite Mediatraffic as a credible source but you are hindering yourself as well your potential audience of accuracy. :gasp: I'll give you a moment to take that in. As we've both stated, you are free to believe as you please but these are not facts. Everything presented can be argued; each song's respective success remains undefined; nothing is concrete; the proof is not in the pudding. I think you got the point, but in the case you did not, I'll be here all night. I'll pass. How much more clearer can we get that AIWFCIY is a HOLIDAY song, so of course around the holidays it's going to get madd airplay and itunes sales? Just like all other popular Holiday songs? I mean, seriously. LOL That's like saying IWALY is the biggest soundtrack single of all time and AIWFCIY is not. The showdown between each is certainly perposterous and this is an argument I most certainly would rather not be a participant in but our dearest Human Nature stepped forward and decidedly changed the course of this thread in an effort to skew thought and even rewrite history. I was gonna post a support gif once I saw that you responded, but honestly it's not even necessary after that.

Again, we are talking about the popularity of the songs NOW. Chart stats from 1992 are irrelevant, not to mention that a CD single for All I Want For Christmas was not even released in a lot of countries including the United States so it couldn't chart. As far as being covered, both songs have been covered but guess what? Whitney covered the song to begin with like many of her biggest hits! When people cover Mariah's, she can take the credit of writing it!

OMG at you going onto YouTube and searching for young people singing it. I guarantee you that young people knowing and loving the song are few and far between, but I digress.

This is so hilarious.
Both songs are known by MILLIONS.
If you (generally speaking) haven't heard of either of these songs, then I think it's time for you to expand your horizons.
"All I Want For Christmas" is a modern day Christmas classic that's heavily played every holiday season. "I Will Always Love You" is probably one of the most covered songs on AI, XFactor and other shows of that sort. They both are evidently remembered. Otherwise we all wouldn't be debating these two particular songs.
And stop Human Nature... you are doing too much.

It amazes me that someone has such ample time on their hands that they spend hours searching for people from different contries who sings a song that wasnt even written by their fav to prove a point. I mean if anything, your just giving Dolly more credit.

I mean if anything, your just giving Dolly more credit. Dolly gets credit for writing the song, but she does not get credit for its huge popularity and mass impact on the world. That's all Whitney. Dolly even acknowledges that. She said she thanks Whitney every chance she gets for recording IWALY, because of her and her voice it earned Dolly an extra $5 million. Give credit where credit is due. & I highly doubt it took Human Nature "hours" to find videos of people of all ages singing IWALY, it only takes minutes to see that once you search as they are all over youtube. Good day. :)

when did this thread become IWALY vs. AIWFCIU? Like many have previously said, pretty clearly an "apples and oranges" sort of comparison.

I Will Always Love You, The Greatest Love Of All and I'm Every Woman are her biggest hits that are remakes, specifically the first two. And no it doesn't bother me in the slightest, because that just shows her versions over shadow the originals, not to mention so many of her other hits are original versions. Originals: Saving All My Love For You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, You Give Good Love, I Have Nothing, Run To You, I'm Your Baby Tonight, Heartbreak Hotel, My Love Is Your Love, It's Not Right But It's Okay, Exhale (Shoop Shoop), etc. :)

I find the whole AIWFCIY vs. IWALY debate to be silly. Both songs are classics. Both songs have been covered countless times and will be covered for years to come. And both songs are international smashes. Yes, the airplay of AIWFCIY is limited to the Christmas season, but during those few months it gets a lot more play than IWALY gets any time of the year, so it sort of balances out. I'm not saying one is bigger than the other, but it's just hard to compare their impact when one is a Christmas song and thus will obviously have impact during that one time of year. I can't think of any Christmas classic that gets played all year round. Also, if we're debating this diva's classic songs, why are we just leaving off "Hero"? That would be a much more fitting comparison than AIWFCIY. That's a classic ballad that gets tons of radio play (and I imagine will continue to for years to come), has been covered numerous times (including the #1 cover in the UK), and is known all around the world.

Many people don't even know that those songs were covers. So keep that.

Mary J is like Celine Dion: sort of a stable seller yet irrelevant. No one gives a crap about them. My aunt Tenisha loves Mary and that's it. Mary appeals to old people and IF that. Like Celine Dion.
