How is "Don't Let Me..." iconic to her career? "...Baby One More Time" and others, sure, but that one? Yeah, I don't understand that point either.

It's actually quite sad that this song took this long to take off on Pop.

Is this the same song that featured Kristy Starling back in 2004?

Magic 106.7 (in Boston) is still an OK AC station, but it has recently slanted toward much more current/upbeat music. They even changed out their bumps and station promos to promote it as a 'the best variety' station rather than the 'at work listening station.' It still does play some 70s records, but is heavier on the 80s and 90s and on some currents.
That said, I agree with the overall sentiment about AC radio. Outside of Michael Buble and Josh Groban, there aren't any artists that can build a brand on AC radio. And some of the older artists, even from the late 90s and early 2000s, are unable to find a home on AC since the format now plays stale top 40 hits from the past 2-3 years.

Am I the only one who thinks this needs to be sent to rhythmic? I feel it would do well there. Overtook Big Sean, J Cole and Chris Brown yesterday to reach #3 on rhythmic, and still climbing fast (#2 peak is sure since Jay-Z is dropping fast, maybe #1 if Drake drops fast enough :o). Nice that I predicted right for a change haha. Hopefully they promote this to urban radio next. I don't think this has an 'urban' flair to it.

Here we go again - time for stations to 'flip the switch' to all-Christmas music is quickly approaching. And yes folks, we already have stations playing all Christmas music. Two stations in upstate NY have flipped the switch. www.syracuse.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2013/10/syracuse_radio_holiday_music_christmas_holly_fm.htmlUnfortunately, 100000watts.com is now out of commission, so I don't know where to get the official list of stations. If someone knows, please post. Otherwise, post in here when your local station 'flips' or other thoughts. :)

I think this song is definitely a case of 'if a monster lead single wasn't released, this song wouldn't be getting this much airplay on pop'.

What the heck is going on with RHY lately? This is reminding me of the late 1990s where RHY was borrowing a lot of off-format songs from pop radio. I don't find this song terribly RHY-friendly, and certainly not enough to have such a huge jump.

Airplay here in Boston has been picking up steadily for this on both pop stations.

Only four artists did this? And Leona Lewis is one of them? On R&R/Mediabase, there are more than 4. Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever - 12 weeks Mariah Carey - We Belong Together - 11 weeks Nathalie Imbruglia - Torn - 11 weeks Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love - 10 weeks Robin Thicke f/ Pharrell & T.I. - Blurred Lines - 10 weeks *N Sync - Bye Bye Bye - 10 weeks

Elton had some hits as openly gay singer. George Michael was one of the hottest stars of the 80's and 90's (with a lot of hits a really good albums) but he never had a hit in the USA after coming out (his last hit was Fast love before the "incident"). Of course the way he came out it wasn't the better to continue success with very conservative american radio. Though he officially came out in the late 90s, there was plenty of suspicion from the media and fans that George Michael was gay. Elton John came out as bisexual in 1976 and as gay in 1988. So, I think it is fair to say that a good chunk of Elton John's career success occurred when it was known he was attracted to men. Furthermore, his music is still played on AC and oldies stations today. He is a music icon and legend. . First, how do you know this is an 'issue'? You seem to be citing Mika as some tell-all example. Is Mika an international superstar selling millions of records worldwide and has numerous #1s elsewhere but the US? Couldn't it just be that this song is just not catching on because it is just not that great? Couldn't it be that no one has heard of Mika? Somehow I doubt the average pop listener hearing Popular Song knows the artist or the fact that he is gay. I have yet to see any more evidence that the US has purposefully biased radio airplay because a male artist is gay. In fact, I think the obvious conclusion is more true - there are international superstars who just don't break big into the US, gay or not gay. Furthermore, there are songs, like Popular Song, that are just not appealing to Americans and hence don't become popular.

If he is (and I think he isn't), he's definitely not openly so. Besides, Mary Lambert is openly gay and "Same Love" peaked at #5 on the daily updates. Yes but i was talking about openly gay male singers. In other countries it doesn't seem to be a problem, but in the USA is very rare an openly gay singer having a top 40 hit. . What about Elton John, George Michael, and Boy George? Those are some big artists with quite a few hits, and Elton John is arguably one of the top artists of the last century.

Yeah, I don't get it either. The song is different, that is for sure. But nothing about it makes me want to listen to it again. Meh.

This song cannot enter the land of obscurity fast enough. How this song was as popular as it was is beyond me.

There is heavy promo for this song already on the Boston pop station WODS with 'Artist You Oughta Know'- type ads. I could see this getting off to a good start. From there, I don't know.

Love it. I do think the preview will hurt the song - the 30 sec of the ah, ah, ay, should be trimmed for preview. Once you hear the song, wow, but I wonder how many people will get turned off by that long intro. Just saying. It's OK in the whole context of the song. I agree - the iTunes preview is terrible because of this very issue. I almost turned it off - it got annoying. Once Celine started singing, though, the lyrics and vocals were great. I am not sure how this will do on AC radio (Elton John's latest has now slowed down). But, I did notice that she has a song with Ne-Yo on the album ('Incredible'). It is not available for listening on iTunes yet, but that could be her link to a Top 40 hit.

I think nobody expected that Gaga will have good callout scores from females 18-34. Huh?

APPLAUSE has the most explosive, addictive hook I have heard in a LONG time. Wow, could not disagree more with this sentiment. I find nothing 'explosive' about the song, nor do I find it terribly addictive. In fact, the first few times I listened to it, I found the lyrics overly vain (even aside from the chorus) and the beat just not very enticing for future listens. So, while I haven't gotten to the point of changing the radio station when the song is on, I am not exactly anxiously waiting for a station to play it either. Re: The latest 'bad' update: Personally, I am not shocked by the overall slowdown of the song on pop radio, particularly with other 'fresher'-sounding songs by new artists making their way up the chart like Royals and Wake Me Up climbing (the latter actually passed Applause just recently, a further blemish on Lady Gaga's weakening 'pop power'). The song will be helped greatly by songs dropping / going recurrent (Get Lucky, The Other Side). It seems even odd to consider it but - could top 10 be in jeopardy? I am not ready to make that bold prediction yet. Just as an anecdote - the song is less heard here in the Boston area, as confirmed by its 12 spin drop on WODS and 6 spin drop on WXKS. Again, not good for an established pop artist. Let's hope she has an 'Edge of Glory' on the album to help out the era or there could be trouble.

This is okay. It's like Paper Planes for middle-class white people. Because Paper Planes was for another demographic? Anyways, that is exactly the song I thought of when I heard it for the first time yesterday.
