Good, this hit #1. Now it can start its free-fall and go into the club of "fast-rise, fast-fall #1 hits on pop that become obscure hits in 1 year."

It's big, but it seems like there are songs that are bigger. Probably true, but this is still one of the better #1 hits on pop radio this decade thus far IMO.

Poor Daughtry. The band just cannot get a grip back on pop/HAC radio at all. The music tastes have just drifted away from them.

After holding a dance format (Evolution) for almost a year, 101.7 FM in Boston has switched formats again and is now a Country Hits station 101.7 The Bull). The station is running commercial free through the entire summer, but its signal is weak and inconsistent, and many listeners are frustrated by it. Now, Boston already has a country station (102.5), so I am unclear why another country station was brought into the mix. Nonetheless, 102.5 has felt the competition and reacted.
102.5 prided itself as being the 'variety' country station and played all new hits but threw in some of the older hits by Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and Shania Twain into their playlist. The station also hosted an oldies country show on Sunday mornings, playing classics by Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, etc. But now, all that is changed. 2 weeks ago, the station dropped the Sunday oldies show (after being on for 20 years). The tag lines are also changed - Country 102.5 is now claiming to be the station with 'the most new hit country', dropping anything to do with variety. Since the change, I haven't heard those classic Garth and Reba songs anymore.
Let's see what will happen and if the Boston market can support 2 country stations.

More drops for AC? *sigh*. That format is really dying out...

Very, very sad day. Like many on this board (and especially the old R&R boards), our music love started with listening to Casey's Top 40 (and its various incarnations). I used to listen every weekend. I recently found AT40's Rewind on a Worcester lite rock station and enjoyed listening to it.
RIP Casey Kasem. "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."

This song actually received similar treatment (i.e., reduction in plays because of sensitivity) but for a different event - the Newtown shootings of 2012.

^I don't know if it is payola or just "this is a Justin Timberlake song". My own personal opinion is that this song will probably peak in the Top 20 because it's Justin T. If this were Justin Smith singing it, the song would probably struggle in the 35-45 range.

this will be a HUGE hit this summer I only pray that it doesn't last all the way until June. (And by typical runs of songs, this song would peak in late April-May).

I heard it on 92 Pro FM on Monday. My first impression - dull and not really that great. Honestly it sounded almost dated.

Given the state of "pop" music today, it won't work.

And yeah, wow. The Mainstream Top 40 of January 24th, 2004 had exactly 10 songs which also charted on alternative. #1 Hey Ya #3 Someday #5 Here Without You #6 It's My Life #10 Headstrong #14 Numb #17 So Far Away #24 Falls On Me #25 Harder To Breathe #36 Stacy's Mom Back in the 90s, it used to be that songs that topped the alternative chart and/or the rock chart did extremely well on pop radio. That changed in the 200s to more of the urban/rhythmic flavor for pop radio. Hopefully the trend will come back towards the rock-ier side. It is also interesting to see what was 'alternative' then vs. now.

I have been a little surprised at what songs have made the Urban chart over the last couple of years, but I have been more surprised at the turnaround on RHY. That format is turning more like it was in 1997-2000 where it was really heavy in playing more 'pop' songs than more format-oriented artists.
In terms of the Urban chart I have followed for years, Dark Horse is not suited for the format. But, who knows what might happen.

this is already becoming a Britney classic I agree. The song, video, tour performance - it's all perfect Britney. Femme Fatale's singles were much better than either of these two lead singles from Britney Jean.

This definitely isn't gonna take off here. Too bad. Contemporary Xmas music really is dead. I don't think contemporary Christmas music is dead, not at all. I think UTT could end up being a classic down the road. I just think CHR is not interested in playing Christmas music with the exception of the few days leading up to Christmas. It would sure be nice if they played it more but I don't think most people who listen to CHR are interested in Christmas music. Those that are will just find their local AC station and go back to CHR when they hear the same Christmas song for the 1000th time. Kelly should get decent play and already being top 50 is quite nice. If it could make top 40 then that would be great, IMO. I remember back when "This Gift" by 98 Degrees and "Auld Lang Syne (2000)" by Kenny G were able to make the top 40 on pop radio (and appear 2 weeks later in January on AT40). I don't see why CHR/POP stations couldn't still do the same today (even if it was only on Mediabase and on Ryan Seacrest's show). But then again, I will never understand why a station has to spin a song 20 times per day either (other than financial incentive and/or a true lack of variety).

I've hear this a few times this past weekend, including once on Delilah. It's good, but not my favorite version of it. *shrug* I think of the recent covers, Elliot Yamin did a great one.

She had a big day today, gained 45 spins. :) Her other two songs gained even more and all 3 songs are now in the top 10. Would love for them to hold that until Sunday so she can have a week with 3 songs in the top 10. Has this been done before? I feel like this has been asked but I am just not sure if it was answered. Michael Buble did it in 2011. He had the entire top 3 on the 12/18 chart and four of the top 6 on the 12/25 chart. He had five in the top 10 on 12/26, but that wasn't an official chart. I don't know of any other instances of an artist having three in the top 10. Ugh at Justin Bieber at #2 on those charts. ;)

I hope Mary J. Blige's "This Christmas" dethrones Kelly's #1. Based on airplay trends, this has a very very small chance of happening. In fact, Kelly Clarkson's 'Please Come Home For Christmas' is poised to leap 'This Christmas' very soon. Besides, IMO, 'Underneath The Tree' is much better. And, on the 'Sans Recurrent Chart' I used to make, Nat King Cole's 'The Christmas Song' did hit #1 one year.

You know what this reminds me of? During one summer, R&R 'contracted' with several of the board members to compile together their book of the decade of songs. Several of us (I was one of them) was tasked with data entry of year-end positions of songs into a spreadsheet and had to e-mail to Ron at R&R. It wasn't terribly hard, but a little time-consuming. But, for our efforts, we did get a free copy of the R&R book and a couple of complimentary R&R issues as well.
Who else was on that project?
