"The thing is that Kanye, Nicki, Taylor, Jackie and Subo are just the type of artists that don't need hit singles to sell at this point." They don't. And what do they have in common ? they are not "pop stars". Exactly. Or the traditional kind of popstars anyway.

Eww @ putting Taylor Swift (Ms. 1 million sales in one week) in the same sentence as Disney trash like JBs and Miley.
Anyways. Very happy for BEP's flop. Susan Boyle's success continues to baffle me. I didn't know senior citizens were so loyal when it comes to buying albums.

^Not just senior citizens, though, who have jumped on the SuBo train. I'm sure she appeals to 40+ pretty decently. And, while people in their teens may consider that senior age, it's far from it :)

I'm 23 but I work with a lot of people in their 40s...none of them care for Boyle's music. And clearly teens don't know who she is...which leaves only one other age-group. Maybe I'm wrong but I'd really like to see a demographic study on her album sales.

In this day and age of YouTube- where SuBo first shot to fame- I'm sure a good number of teens at least have heard of her. They may not listen to her music, though, that's true.
And you should know that we can't rely on our own set of experiences to determine a widespread take on SuBo's appeal. It could very well be that people in the senior age are buying her music- or, that relatives and such are buying it for senior-age people they know.

I think this 4Q has proved that you don't need a hit single to sell a record at all. And a big artist having a huge hit single doesn't translate into big sales. Kanye, Nicki, and Taylor have all had moderate to no hits off their albums and still sold big. Susan Boyle and Jackie Evancho are having barely any sales on iTunes or garnering any radio airplay for their records but are selling like crazy. Everyone I know actually likse 'The Dirty Bit'. I have barely hear any complaints from casual listener or BEP fans alike. When the video or song trends on my Facebook, it gets a zillion likes. I just don't think anyone wants a full album of BEP's music considering it all gets overplayed to death. And if they really do want the track, they will purchase the ones they like off iTunes. Who really spins their whole 'The END' album now without skipping BBP or IGF anyway? No one wants to make a stupid purchase like that. taylor had a hit that went top 10 on three formats and number 3 on the hot 100. it also went top 20 on a 4th format. nicki had your love which got minor pop love, and spent a crazy amount of weeks on the top of the rap chart. check it out also got some minor pop love, and right thru me is rising. Taylor's first single from her follow up to Fearless would have gone Top 10 on the Hot 100 even if she changed genres and did a rap track or something. Or even if she made something absolutely horrid. She has no problem selling singles. Nicki still capitalizes on her features. Her solo singles are not achieving the same success.

Not really; 'Your Love' and 'Right Thru Me' are bigger hits than every feature she's been on besides 'My Chick Bad' and 'Bottoms Up'. 'Your Love' managed to top the Rap chart, which none of her features did.

Boyle > Nicki
Boyle's record sales probably come from the same people who buy Josh Groban and those types.

Subo and Taylor are going to dominate the chart until the end of the year. This is so true. But I'm also pretty sure the Boyle Monster will also go 2x plat. by the end of this year. Bambi will too.

Wow, I wonder if the final projections will really add much. They must have reported a lot of the popular retailers first this week.
Are projections likely to be off each week of the holiday shopping season? Either way, great numbers for Subo and Taylor. I wonder if Taylor has that deal with Target through Christmas because she still has the biggest display out at the Target I go to...last Monday almost all her albums were gone!!

Hmm... those numbers look kind of high. Agreed. Looks like SuBo will pull 300k+ if the patterns follow for the rest of the chart.

HITS projected 275K-300K for SuBo, so very possible.

Hmm...maybe HDD's Friday predictions underpredicted for some of these acts.

HITS projected at least 45K for the Burlesque soundtrack, but these early numbers don't support that (unless it sees a jump with the rest of the reports).

Are projections in December usually off because of the holidays?

They probably take into account holiday shopping, whatnot, but it's tougher to guesstimate than non-holiday periods.

my guess is they just took the highest outlets first. I just don't see Recovery doing 50K this week. My guess is most of the predictions HDD made will be on the money.

Just had to hold back a comment Anyway, I do hope some of these albums beat the HDD predictions (or at least SuBo). I love that she sells so amazingly.

I think this has most except online. I cannot see Kayne or Nicki falling that low and the BEP,, Rihanna and Burlesque numbers are too low as well.

In the debut week, Burlesque had 32K in digital sales (51% of its overall sales), per Billboard. It may lose a few sales there, but even still, that could bring it 25K or so additional sales.

^ Yeah, that's probably why the number for the OST is so low at the moment.

It's easy to forget that this forum is filled with under 21's until someone says an auto-tuned rapper is better than someone who can sing. lol.
