Oh, the old "Rihanna sells so little with so many hits...", people needs to get over it. We will see, but for all we know Chris could plummet after the first week and don't even come close to Loud sales so... I don't really think there is anything to get over, it is what it is. and him plummeting is 100% irrelevant to people attacking me for pointing that his album is substantially outselling LOUD out the gate. What's with everyone's fascination about first week numbers? We've seen time and time again that first week means nothing if your album doesn't have legs in the long run

I don't get the point in putting so much emphasis on first-week sales for any artist. There are so many things that go on during the chart-run of an album. "F.A.M.E." will outsell "LOUD" the first week, and so have thousands of other albums. That clearly means nothing.
I can give you a perfect example: Nicki Minaj and Kanye West's album both came out around the same time as "LOUD" and both debuted with over 400k+. If you look at the Billboard 200 now, they've all scanned around the same amount of albums.

Radio play is usually the one thing that will extend an album's shelf life so opening weeks may not matter for some artists that are almost certain to have a lot of exposure on radio. For other artists that can't count on massive radio exposure debut numbers are important. The higher you open the better chance you'll have of a gold, platinum (or better album) even if radio isn't onboard with you for that era. In addition once you have several records out there some evidence can be used to determine how large one's core fanbase may be. It can be useful in plotting their releases and staging their tours.

But I definitely think the whole "F.A.M.E." vs. "LOUD" thing is pointless because: 1. If you do an album-by-album comparison, he has always outsold her the first week (excluding "Graffiti" for obvious reasons). 2. They're not even in direct competition with each other. Nobody would be comparing their album sales if they hadn't been in a relationship. Comparing him to Trey Songz, Usher, and Ne-Yo would be more plausible. 3. The difference between the first-week sales are being exaggerated IMO. People are acting like he sold 500k or something.

Go Duran Duran! A top 20 album for them would be awesome. They have no major label either.

A few ones like JLo's were big because they had promo and singles. GaGa's was also top 10 for a week, but she's a much bigger name than Ke$ha, and I don't think that awful Paint-made cover bodes well for decent sales.

Seriously. There is nothing "ouch" about her sales. She's pulling 170k in her first week - that's actually really good. Comparing her to Fantasia, Back to me sold what, 95k in its first week? "Bittersweet" was comparable to Jenn's "Where You At" at radio, and they both had similar hype going into the release. I'm only comparing them because they both had similarly received RnB singles going into the releases. 170k is great. If the album doesn't have legs - now that would be an "ouch" Fantasia sold 117k her first week But Jennifer will have a massive drop in week 2. Her sales this week are the result of a very aggressive promo week (Leno, The View, 20/20, GMA, American Idol, 106 & Park, Soul Sessions, Wendy Willaims). Actually, Fantasia had a VERY similar promo line-up for her release. She had done Idol (not the week of, but still), GMA, 106 & Park, The View, Wendy Williams and I think a few others. She also even had her own TV show promoting the album. I'm not buying the argument that Jennifer had more tv appearances, cause it really wasn't the case. Just because people expected about 200k first week doesn't mean 170k is an ouch... that's all I'm saying. Few RnB females could pull that number... even with the same promo or airplay.

If an album doesn't sell well in its first week, a label will pull back or even stop plans for promotion. Look at Christina Aguilera. She bombed the first week and the label stopped promoting the album after the 2nd single dropped.

IA except actually the first month is what sets the tone for future promo.
if it just drops after one month then it is pretty much as wrap.

[/b] Umm no they haven't lmao...........Nicki is just under 1,230,000 where as Rihanna is just under 1,090,000. Thats still 140k difference. Sure she has SLIGHTLY closed the gap but she has also had 3 consecutive top 5 smashes, sooooo ???

Great she has two hits, but there's less hype IMO than last time. But, I feel like there's better press for the album, so it's a toss up. I'll prematurely say 300-350K. She should be able to do at least Blackout level numbers, I hope.

I don't understand why I'm being quoted with this information. I didn't say her sales were an 'ouch'. I was just explaining that her first week is front-loaded because of heavy promo, and a big drop should be expected.
