[Blahblahblah]The Hot 100 doesn't exist to measure a song's popularity on TV.[/blahblahblah] But if a song that's already being promoted to radio has a dramatic sales spike after a performance on TV, well, that's totally different and completely okay for the Hot 100 to measure. You know, just as long as those icky Glee songs and album tracks aren't ruining the purity of the charts... Not to defend Glee songs because I personally would rather a Hot 100 without them as well but why should the chart not measure the effects of TV every week? I think as a whole, the Hot 100 should be looking for ways to measure as much as it can and while they probably can't measure "audience" properly from TV show appearances the way they can with the audience of a spin on radio, they can still measure the direct results through outlets like iTunes so I think it's the next best thing. The same thing applies to a new indie song that gets played on some random teen drama and then suddenly gets tons of digital purchases from curiosity which also leads to radio requests and bam! you have a hit. I agree with you! I think the Hot 100 should be more inclusive, not less. I keep getting misunderstood here; I forget how sarcasm doesn't always well translate online. I don't know what rules BB could establish that would exclude Glee songs or album tracks from a new release from the Hot 100, but not that random new song that charts because it was sung by someone on a singing competition or something from a new Apple commercial. That would be endlessly complicated and ultimately not fair. And like someone else pointed out already, if the rule becomes that a song has to be "officially" promoted to chart, then you are just going a ton of #1 debuts because Rihanna/Katy/et al will put new songs up for sale, have them featured in commercials or sing them on TV, radio will jump on them because it's new Rihanna/Katy, but they won't "officially" release the song until it looks good to go #1. So all the new chart regulations to keep the charts "pure" will bring is labels finding new loopholes to keep on gaming the system.

I haven't been as perplexed about the success of a song as I have been by "Moves Like Jagger." Is it doing so well because most of the top twenty are falling songs that reached critical mass earlier in the summer? It's as if summer had a whole bunch of supercompetitive and overplayed songs that all hit together but there were no "like" material to replace them in August/Sept cycle so a few atypical song (by current radio trends) are now shooting to the top. Look at the number of negative AIs in the top 20! It's as if Radio is in a holding period and refusing to reset for the fall period. I'm picking on MLJ because it is not a dance floor anthem, unlike most of of #1s this summer and past year, and it is not necessarily a song that has ascended into the cultural space. It is also not a song I would imagine teenagers would be singing along to. I can rationalize it's airplay success, but the fact that it is also selling so well just seems weird. Wouldn't the fact that some stations were airing the Iheart festival, be the cause for some of the drop in AI?

Perhaps they could just apply the same rules to non-radio singles that they apply to recurrent songs. If it doesn't have enough points to make the top 50 and is not being actively pushed at radio, it does not chart.
This would not eliminate ALL the random one-week charting songs, but it would cut their numbers down quite a bit, and it would avoid the "well they'll just pretend it's not officially promoted until it has enough points for #1" scenario.

Also keep in mind that TV is not as subject to a person's musical tastes as say radio. Commercials are made by advertisement companies who pay to have their stuff shown. VS radio which is really all about pleasing the listening public. TV and radio aren't different in that regard. Radio and TV advertising are the same, they target the audience that is there. Ads aren't made to bring in audience. What radio does to keep the audience is selecting the songs and programs they like, which is exactly like TV does by selecting the shows people like. TV and Radio aren't really so different. The thing is that every single music broadcast on TV, outside of music videos (which are actually measured by Mediabase, IIRC), can't easily be considered as the music being the main driving factor -- many people might watch Glee for its plot rather than the music or American Idol because they think a contestant is cute.

Music may not be the main factor in those cases, but the Hot 100 measures popularity, and even if one watches American Idol for the contestants, when a song is performed on the show it increases that song's popularity. Remember when Haley Reinhart performed Rolling in the Deep and the song reached #1 for the first time? That's something radio airplay can't account for. Take, for example, So you think you can dance. Dance is the main focus of the show, and not the music, but we've seen many instances in which a song rose at iTunes after being used for a dance performance on the show. So that exposure did influence on the song's popularity.

(edit: This was in response to Slizzard's last post on page 2) LOL, I don't know if I'd say I had a sharp eye; it's probably more that I just read this whole thread plus most of the last one in one sitting and noticed how we were getting progressively fewer and fewer songs with 100+ AI totals. So I happened to be paying attention to a very specific thing and that is why I noticed, because I was expecting PRA to be below 100 for today's update. Speaking of, when was the last time we only had two songs above 100m AI? I I know we're 'in between' the shift from the summer songs that ruled and the fall songs that will soon take over, but I genuinely can't recall this happening before, at least not under recent chart methodology. In fact I think it's somewhat rare that we have less than four songs above 100m, no? From 4/6 to 4/8, only S&M and Forget You were 100m+ From 4/23 to 4/28, and then 5/4 to 5/6, only E.T. and S&M were 100m+ Those are the only instances this year though. LOL, told you I don't really have sharp eyes. And I'm slow to reply, to boot But thanks for the answer.

#1 for more weeks than RITD? nope. Never doubt the Adele it can come back to bite you, as evidenced by some of the posts in ' Where will SLY peak on the Hot100?' ;) Of course, having 8 weeks at #1 with SLY would be an unbelievable achievement. But the unbelievable seems easy for her at the moment - it's the impossible that takes longer.

Yes, "Papi" smashing it hard. Now that the impact date has hit, it's going to reach astronomical levels- well, probably not.

New songs by divas will always be bolded, no matter how big flops they are.
Songs under 10m AI shouldn't be bolded at all IMO - as soon as a song reaches that level and increases remarkably, then it should be highlighted.

Just calm down about the bolded songs, everyone. It's no big issue, if they annoy you, you can always copy the update to Word and bold/unbold whatever you like yourself. I bold 1M+ gainers myself, but if Diego wants to bold whatever he deems important through his personal judgment, or just whatever he feels like bolding for no reason in particular, that's up to him. 9/28 airplay updates:[/u] 1. MAROON 5 F/CHRISTINA AGUILERA - Moves Like Jagger: 131.752 (+ 0.984) 2. ADELE - Someone Like You: 108.447 (+ 3.428) ▲3. BAD MEETS EVIL - Lighters f/Bruno Mars: 103.471 (- 1.732) ▼ 4. I have no problem with it, just stated my opinion in the wake of conversation.. It's just a highlighted text and I'm fine with everything. And I truly appreciate that people post the updates here.

MLJ will get one more week on top, than SLY will take back #1 again.
And by one more week, I mean NEXT week, as in the week ending Oct 8th, 2011.
