CARRIE ON, UNDERWOOD’S COMING 19/RCA Nashville Star Set to Debut #1, Now 42, Norah Jones, B.o.B Also on Tap
May 2, 2012
Carrie Underwood’s poised for a #1 debut. Her new 19/RCA Nashville album, Blown Away, will top next week’s chart with estimates of between 275-295k, according to one-day sales reports from retailers busy packing their bags for next week’s NARM convention in L.A.
It’s the former American Idol winner’s fourth studio album and first since 2009’s Play On, which sold 318k on its debut Nov. 3 of that year on the way to a total over 2 million.
Underwood performed her iconic Idol cover of Heart’s “Alone” last night as part of a 10-song set for Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio in N.Y.C.
Capitol/EMI’s Now 42, a series surprisingly still showing some sales power, will debut with 95-100k.
Blue Note/EMI Grammy winner Norah Jones’ Danger Mouse-produced Little Broken Hearts, which represents a significant stylistic departure, is on target for 90-100k. It’s her first album since 2009’s The Fall, which sold 181k its first week in Nov.
Grand Hustle/Atlantic rapper B.o.B’s sophomore album, Strange Clouds, is set for 70-80k in first-week sales.
Marilyn Manson’s new album for Cooking Vinyl/Downtown, Born Villain, looks to sell 35-40k. It’s his first album in three years since leaving Interscope Records.
Marvel Music/Hollywood’s Avengers Assemble soundtrack, featuring “Live to Rise,” the first new Soundgarden track in years, along with songs from Shinedown, Bush, Rise Against, Scott Weiland, Black Veil Brides, Evanescence, Five Finger Death Punch, Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Cherri Bomb, is earmarked for sales of 25-30k.
The UMe release of the companion CD to Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison documentary, Living in the Material World, is slated for 14-17k.
Atlantic hip-hop hybrid Santigold’s sophomore album Master of My Make-Believe is on target for 12-15k.
Album sales were down 6% vs. last week, flat vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.
Track sales were down 1.5% vs. last week, up 1% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.
TEA sales were down 4% vs. last week, up 1% vs. same week last year and up 2% year to date.

Nice numbers for Carrie and Norah... thought B.o.B would be higher

I hope Carrie can get to 300k, especially with the Idol performance tomorrow. Norah continues her downward trajectory of each successive album selling half the amount the former sold.

With American Idol tomorrow she should have no problem hitting 300K.

Carrie's projected numbers are very solid considering Play On did 318k and it was released in November and I'd argue "Cowboy Casanova" was a bit of a bigger hit. Its second week drop should also be cushioned a little cause of Mother's Day

Yes! I knew she wouldn't do under 200K like some were predicting. I really hope they do something-amazing Idol performance, quickie discount or sale, anything to push it just to the 300K mark. Impressive numbers nevertheless.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised at the prediction for Norah, but I was hoping it'd be higher. Oh, well...90k-100k people will enjoy one of the best albums of the year. ;)
(for the record, before anyone snaps at me, I quite like Carrie's as well, haha)

Wow I'm really surprised B.o.B's numbers are that high, his promotion has been sh*t and he hasn't really had a big hit yet. Good for him.

Its second week drop should also be cushioned a little cause of Mother's Day And her promotional tour; Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel. They fall within the second week of sales, so that'll help to cushion her decrease as well.

Carrie Underwood Heading for Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200
May 02, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Country superstar Carrie Underwood's Blown Away is set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. The album should sell around 275,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, May 6, according to industry sources.
Blown Away is her fourth album and will become her third chart-topper following 2009's Play On and 2007's Carnival Ride. Her debut release, 2005's Some Hearts, bowed and peaked at No. 2.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, May 9.
Blown Away is Underwood's first album to be released outside of the always-busy fourth quarter, where sales are amplified as consumers are shopping for holiday gifts. Thus, it's not a huge surprise to see how Blown Away's start is a bit less than that of her earlier albums. Play On launched with 318,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan, Carnival Ride bowed with 527,000 and Some Hearts did 315,000.
The new album's lead single, "Good Girl," holds at No. 8 with a bullet for a fourth straight week on the Country Songs chart. It is her 15th top 10 hit on the tally.
As for the rest of next week's Billboard 200 chart, look for Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts to start in the top five, along with B.o.B's Strange Clouds and the latest "Now That's What I Call Music!" compilation -- Now 42. Jones will be the biggest of that bunch, with perhaps around 100,000 sold.

Hopefully after the Idol performance tomorrow, she will be able to exceed Play On's debut week sales.

It's just not happening. Idol has nowhere near the clout that it used to. I think the best Blown Away can hope for is just under 300K for the opening week.

Something tells me 295k is a very optimistic ceiling. It might trend 290k after Idol.

Hmm. Given that Billboard is predicting 275k, perhaps HDD's prediction of 275 to 295k takes into account any gains from Idol?

Eh B.o.B opened up with 88k on his debut. He'll sell over time.

B.o.B album is AWESOME. and the Taylor Swift single will help the album a ton and he has a ton of potential hits with Nicki Minaj, etc. 500k easily.

I'm not expecting Nelly to sell 198k...where the hell did that number come from?
Also questionable numbers:
Adam Lambert 100k (might be lower) Maroon 5 158k (could be higher)

Nelly Furtado 198k
That seems to high...Loose did 212 in 2006 with Promiscious being huge(although she was coming off a flop).
Maroon 5 158k
This seems too low. How much did Hands all over debut at?
And great numbers for Carrie!!! I'm thinking just a little under 300.

Interesting how Usher and Justin Bieber are releasing their albums within a week of each others again, though this time in reverse order. Usher probably doesn't want Justin potentially blocking him from #1 debut.

I would die if Carrie sold 299k....
I would die and be reincarnated if she sold just over 300,000.
Has this ever happened? Where an artist just misses, or barely passes a big number like this?

I'm expecting Avril's Goodbye Lullaby numbers for Nelly Furtado. I'm also thinking Maroon 5 can top 200k. I highly doubt Adam Lambert can open with 100k either; I'm thinking 40-50k instead.
