Just received this from Reba's office:
SUPERSTAR REBA MCENTIRE BREAKS BILLBOARD CHART RECORD
This week Reba's "Somebody" becomes her 22nd #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. With this chart topper, Reba breaks the record for longest span of #1 hits by a female country performer. Reba's string of #1 hits stretch from October 2, 1982 when "I Can't Even Get The Blues" went #1 to "Somebody" on July 26, 2004- --that's 21 years, 9 months. In Radio and Records, "Somebody" moves to #2 and earns the #1 most increased song in points and plays.
---
Soooo... REBA IS #1 ON BILLBOARD... HER FIRST #1 SINCE 1998! Woo hoo!

Congrats! Well maybe radio is learning that FEMALES sell better than MEN Reba ain't selling better than anybody. Even though this is obvious payloa, I don't have too much of a problem with it since it is being used to support a veteran artist who has had success for two decades. Kind of a thank you for making us so much money during your career.

Jimmy, I think I agree with you. Reba has done so much for MCA and COUNTRY MUSIC in general, that she deserves this! Thank you Reba!

This is absolutely amazing. If you'd have said two weeks ago that this song would knock Tim out of #1, no one would have believed it.
I'm guessing Dolly held the previous record for longest span between #1s. Her first was in December '70 and her last was in March '91. That's 20 years and three months.

I do believe, though, that Reba will only hold the spot for this week, and that Tim will take over again. Either him or Kenny... it will be interesting to see how fast this song drops, because I have no doubt that it will plummet, but I am still glad she's got a #1 though

I have not seen a song move this much since "have you forgotten" did. I have also not seen a song that has been in the top 40 for this many weeks do this either EVER (I mean in the last 14 years on Billboard). I know there have been songs that have charted in the top 60 (such as Just to see you smile). In fact, I will have to check this week to see if a song has EVER taken this many total chart weeks to hit #1. I know Jamie O'neil may still have the longest, but I will see when I get home tonight if I have time. And yes, 2 weeks ago, or even LAST week, I would not have thought this song had a chance. Our station in milw has been playing it more and more because she was in town last friday, and they used it to give away tickets. Then I suppose after the show on sat and sunday, people called in and requested an encore lol.

Wow, I go away for a couple days and Reba has another #1 hit! Amazing!
I don't care if she got it because of payola (which I doubt it was soley based on) or because country radio finally got its head out of its ass, but I'm thrilled that my favorite song of the year is now a #1 hit.

I am glad for her. I just wish her album sold more. Her label did some pushing and paying for the single. It took forever to reach #1.

LOL, I noticed. You gotta admire MCA's determination though. What was the last song to go #1 on Billboard, but not R&R?

Yeah, its number one on Billboard. Huh? I was asking the last song to go Billboard #1, but not R&R. Looks like that'll happen here.

Unfortunately, "It Just Has To Be This Way" won't be the next single it seems. www.reba.com/poll.htmThe four options they have in the second round are "Secret", "My Sister", "Sky Full Of Angels" and "He Gets That From Me". I'm obviously going to vote for "He Gets That From Me".

'SOMEBODY' TO LOVE
Hi Fred,
Reba McEntire's single "Somebody" has just reached No. 1 [on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart]. This makes it her 22nd No. 1 hit, putting her in second place for most No. 1s by a female country artist.
Reba also breaks the record for longest span of No. 1 hits by a female country artist. I think this is great for one of country music's greatest singers and performers of all time.
My question is, who has the most No. 1 singles by a country artist and where does Reba sit?
Thank you very much,
Greg Dow
Dear Greg,
It's a great chart week for Reba McEntire. Full details of her chart achievements with "Somebody" can be found in the Chart Beat column in the Aug. 4 print edition of Billboard. There's also an item about her in "Chart Beat Bonus."
As you point out, McEntire now has the longest span of No. 1s by a solo female artist. Counting back to January 1983, when she earned her first chart-topper with "Can't Even Get the Blues," her span of No. 1 hits is 21 years and seven months.
That beats Dolly Parton's span of No. 1 tunes, which stretches over 20 years and three months, from "Joshua" in February 1971 to "Rockin' Years," recorded with Ricky Van Shelton, in May 1991. Parton is still ahead in sheer number of chart-toppers, with 24 to McEntire's 22.
Dolly and Reba still have a long way to go to match the artist with the most No. 1 titles on our country chart. Dolly needs 16 more and Reba needs another 18 to equal the 40 No. 1 hits racked up by Conway Twitty.

BE 'SOMEBODY': As foretold last week, Reba McEntire's "Somebody" (MCA) takes charge of Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks with a 3-1 move. McEntire thus becomes the second female artist to top this chart in 2004, following newcomer Gretchen Wilson's reign with "Redneck Woman."
"Somebody" is McEntire's 22nd No. 1 hit, and puts her closer to matching Dolly Parton's total of 24, the most for any woman in the history of this chart.

I think George Strait is up to 38 or 39 #1s, so I'd look for him to possibly tie or break the record coming in w/ his greatest hits album. I'm honestly thinking I hate everything will hit #1 in about 6-8 weeks. I have Joel Whitburn's book at home, I was looking at running the numbers for the 6 top 20 spots he has, such as weeks at #1, # top 40 and 10 hits, # chart hits, # of #1s, etc. I think we can see a huge surge in several of them by fairly newer acts, such as AJ, TK, TM, GS, Reba, etc. I know they mentioned last week that Tim was #1 for 59 weeks already, which was #1 in the soundscan era. I think we will see most of these records fall someday due to the fact that songs are spending more weeks on the charts and more weeks at #1. I will try to run these #s this weekend. Mike

Actually, George Strait has reached 50 #1s, and Conway 49:
50 at 50! GEORGE STRAIT SCORES HIS 50th #1 HIT SINGLE! Strait Breaks Conway Twitty's Record For #1s By a Single Artist Nashville, TN (December 16, 2002) - George Strait has achieved another career milestone by scoring his 50th #1 single. 'She'll Leave You With A Smile' from his Road Less Traveled CD, hits the #1 spot this week setting a new record for #1 songs by a single artist in any genre. He breaks Conway Twitty's long-standing record of 49*.
Upon hearing the news Strait said,'While I am extremely pleased and excited about reaching this new milestone in my career, I realize that it would not have been possible without an enormous amount of support from the fans and from country radio as well as the unending effort of dozens, maybe even hundreds of great people who have worked at MCA Records over the course of my career. There is no way that I can find the words to properly express my gratitude to everyone for their help. I am very humbled by it all.'
George Strait first hit the charts when 'Unwound' took the #6 position in 1981. His first #1 was 'Fool Hearted Memory' in 1982 and between 1986 and 1989 each of the 11 singles he released hit the #1 spot. Strait has sold over 57 million records and is the most certified country artist of all time with 25 platinum albums.
*Conway achieved an additional six #1s as duets with Loretta Lynn.

which chart(s) is this based off of? I know no one has that many on billboard alone. Actually, George Strait has reached 50 #1s, and Conway 49: 50 at 50! GEORGE STRAIT SCORES HIS 50th #1 HIT SINGLE! Ok, but I was talking just BB. Fred Bronson confirms Conway has 40 in his column this week: It's a great chart week for Reba McEntire.
