I think the next addition should be Last.fm scrobbles I've been saying that since last year. I think it's a reasonable and excellent idea since it's the closest we can get to tracking personal device plays. Another good measure of both popularity and likability. When you think about it, tracking purchases works but you can only purchase a song once. If I buy a song, I'm not crazy enough to buy it for every week after that to keep it on the chart. But if I love it, I'll keep listening to it for weeks or months later. Billboard doesn't track that. It should.

Just read through this thread. LMAO. Billboard keeps getting stupider. And I'm almost starting to enjoy it.

How would it fall to #75 next week? It's still #1 on iTunes and probably would be top 5/10 with the normal formula. Hypothetical. Though I don't think this song will be #1 for very long. Looking back on Friday, that was a *thing* for just a couple of weeks. The thing with fads is that they don't last very long. Present day musical fads, especially ones that involve viral videos like this, won't last too long either. There isn't enough meat to the song to turn it into its own radio hit or anything that would give it longevity. The whole Harlam Shake concept itself is already feeling old. I want to make my own video but I feel like I'm late on the boat for it at this point. Everyone's talking about how overdone the idea has become and it's only been a few weeks.

I was telling someone earlier that we should make a Pulse song and video, lol I actually think we should. Not sure how we could go about doing it but we could totally make a We Are The World styled song where everyone contributes a line and a video of them singing that line (preferably overdubbed so then the video can be something completely crazy) and then we put it together. The thing that makes the video and song special is that it'll be a truly worldwide effort with dozens of people who helped make it happen! I can produce the song!

It looks like I can start from the bottom again. I just thought I found the perfect way to predict the Hot 100, and then Billboard changes the formula again. :'(

Ekhm.....
Bill Werde @bwerde The new #Hot100 has a target chart ratio of sales (35-45%), airplay (30-40%) and streaming (20-30%). These change based on platform volume.

What I'm wondering at the moment is how they counted the YouTube streams for "Harlem Shake" as it's from hundreds if not thousands of unofficial 30 second videos. Doing that manually would take forever, so what kind of system do they have in place for that?

I think it takes such a situation to make them realize they need to change. I bet this change was a last minute decision due to the sudden popularity of the Harlam Shake (dare I call it a) movement. They figured since that song was as popular as it is, and it's an actual song, the Hot 100 would look foolish to not represent it as it should be if they want to remain relevant, despite the controversy it would cause. It's like when the Eagles sold 700k with only Wal-Mart sales. I'm sure that was an instant decision too because you can't ignore something that big without it reflecting poorly on your accuracy and what you're supposed to be reporting. It's understandable enough. "Gangnam Style" took them by surprise do of course they want to be on top of the latest trend.

There's now 6 components to the Hot 100: -Digital Track Sales -Airplay -Passive Streaming -On-Demand Streaming -YouTube Streaming -Physical Single Sales i am starting to think an all sales should be more heavily weighted. The problem with youtube is, what counts as a single and what doesnt count as it relates to the HOT 100 and chart changes should be announced at least two weeks prior to implementation.

After this latest change I have come to the conclusion that there is a lot to be said for national pop music charts being based solely on sales! No fiddling with a formula, 1 sale = 1 chart point. Putting myself in Billboard's chart department's shoes, how does one come up with a formula that tries to measure a song's popularity using radio airplay (no way of knowing how many listeners actually like the song), passive streaming (same problem as radio), Youtube views (how many are watching the video for the song as opposed to other reasons). Only sales and on-demand streams have a strong link to popularity. Of course P2P file sharing also indicates a song's popularity but I don't think BB will ever go there!

I think the ideal chart would be a 60/40 split of sales and radio, but we can basically throw that out the window because that's never going to happen.

I think the ideal chart would be a 60/40 split of sales and radio, but we can basically throw that out the window because that's never going to happen. I would like a 60% sales, 20% on demand, 10% for both passive streaming and radio airplay. Radio airplay and passive streaming are essentially the same thing.

I ddnt read all 11 pages so sorry if this is a repeat comment.....So by viewing about 100 thirty second clips of college kids making humorous viral videos, I essentially bought 25 digital downloads of Harlem shake for chart purposes? I don't even like the song . : (

What about all the Genre Charts now - Take for example Hot Country Songs - In the last 6 months, its essentially been the Hot 100 with country songs weeded out. Does this remain in play, and thus all the genre song charts incorporate YouTube as well? I guess so...

There were two positive consequences: Stay's jump to #3 and the debut of Just Give Me A Reason. Still, I hate the change, refuse to look on this chart as legit one that shows what's the most popular song in the US.

So many good songs falling because of formula change :'( But some good songs are rising, too :)

aaaaargh, it happened again! This thread was three pages long when I checked it yesterday! Wow, when BB makes a change on the chart, they really go whole hog with it. On one hand, I am glad there is more an element in the chart now that the public can control just as it does with sales. On the other, the weighting of youtube views seems to be heavy-handed. I wonder if they had a test chart or they just decided on a whim that this was the week to add Youtube views.
I pulled up Bauuer on youtube to see what the fuss was about last week. Couldn't make it through the song. Gave it another chance a couple days later. Made it about halfway. But I guess I contributed to its #1 position!

Thanks, 2m- now, I don't have to adjust the presentation- "this week," "last week," etc. rankings in their preferred places. :)

So, what will they do if the duration of this song's occupation ends up becoming a trifle ridiculous? Will they admit they made a misstep and readjust the formula again, or will they find some pretext to remove it without having to change their policy?

Still, I hate the change, refuse to look on this chart as legit one that shows what's the most popular song in the US. The Hot 100 lost all credibility for me and I'm sure many people aren't happy with this new rule. This won't help indie/alternative/independents AT ALL, is that guy on crack? It happens Harlem Shake is a viral sensation but not all independent artists are. This will benefit the major label acts.

As much as this new format may help my favorite artist Taylor Swift,I think this rule is unfair. It is basically turning the Billboard Hot 100 into another TRL. That means any song that becomes a vital hit even if the song is 20 to 30 years old can top the Billboard chart at any given week. Harlem Shake has to be one of the worst #1's ever to top the Billboard chart. That means you can watch a random video on Youtube and keep refreshing the views and it is gonna count for the Hot 100.

So does previewing songs on i-tunes count towards the Hot 100 as well?
