I think it's starting to click with more pop listeners. I have friends who aren't into R&B but are starting to really love the song.

Sometimes, for some annoying big hits (for example, Justin Bieber's Baby), many haters watch the music videos on youtube just to post negative comments, NOT because they like the song and want to watch the music video. So, it's really a bias. Sometimes haters listen to a song on the radio. Because they have no choice and are in the car with someone who loves the song. Radio is a bias too. Even if they are hating the song doesn't mean it isn't less popular. It makes it even more popular because it has haters. Popular doesn't necessarily mean "likes". It means "known".

I wonder if there's any limit at all to how much of a song you have to hear then.
Like, what if I were a big Bieber fan and refreshed the Baby video every 5 seconds? Would I be able to get it the points for 120 video streams in 10 minutes? Or every 3 seconds - 200 video streams in 10 minutes? I feel like BB should say something about this.

If everyone hates it, then it won't be popular. The only exception I can think of is "Friday," but even then, I think a lot of people did like it because it was so bad.

...did I bump my head or did the definition of 'popular' change one night while I was sleeping?

...did I bump my head or did the definition of 'popular' change one night while I was sleeping? I think the point people are trying to make isn't about the definition of the word "popular", but rather to point out that popularity in the true sense of the word is not what the Hot 100 has ever sought to measure, as it is more about ranking the songs that are doing well across various drivers of revenue. In that sense, it doesn't matter whether you love or hate the song you're hearing on the radio or hearing in a YouTube clip or whatever, because people are still getting paid.

The only issue here is that the H100 formula is up to the whims of the editors. Is a YouTube view really worth more than a sale? Is it worth more than radio? \ Remember, it wasn't that long ago when BB trying to weave in downloads basically weighed them double and we saw a period where downloads dominated over what was played on the radio. Then one week, BB decides to make it closer to 50/50 sales/airplay. Did those songs suddenly become less/more popular? Nope just the formula changed. Now more than ever, the component charts are what interest me - the airplay, streaming and sales individually. The cumulative H100 is kind of a joke.

The only issue here is that the H100 formula is up to the whims of the editors. Is a YouTube view really worth more than a sale? Is it worth more than radio? I don't disagree with you here. This is an issue I've raised in the past as well: I'd like to know how much revenue is actually being generated from each component, because I think the weighting should be proportional. Billboard clearly disagrees, because, as you mention, they seem to consider that factor, but also consider others when determining how they weight things. Basically, I think they're smart to keep expanding the chart to consider the many ways in which music can bring in funds for those involved in its creation, but I'd like more information about the reasoning behind the way various components are weighted before I could make a reasonable determination if I agree or disagree with that.

I thought they were making the literal argument that popular = most known (this misunderstanding of the definition of popular has been a pet peeve of mine since sixth grade, so it was driving me up the wall lol). But yeah, I do agree that the Hot 100 has never really aimed to highlight the most popular songs in the nation (though the 50/50 formula came close to approximating that). Of course, whether or not one agrees with the Hot 100's intention is another matter, and I think that is where a lot of the disagreements over the changes come in, b/c some see the chart as best serving one purpose while others believe it should measure something else.

Doesn't the same thing happen on Spotify and to a lesser effect, iTunes? 2. Youtube only allows a certain amount of views from one person, I think 100 or so. Oh and a question - how much money do labels make from radio?

YouTube does have a function that scrutinizes views on the more popular videos, as explained in this video:

I just realized why Harlem Shake is so popular. ..gives white guys who can't dance a reason to dance and maybe not look like a fool

What is the new Billboard method Billboard has not provided their new formula (for some reason they are now very secretive about their calculation methods, they never used to be). Youtube streams are now included in the HOT 100 formula, likely they are considered "passive" streaming which was 300 streams per chart point. The controversial aspect of Billboard's new formula is the inclusion of all streams that use a song even if it is only 30 seconds long. Thus all those Youtube videos you see where groups of people are dancing to the "Harlem Shake" are now included in the HOT100. As far as I can ascertain, only views by Americans are included.

Similar to why "America's Funniest Videos" has been popular for so long. To my mind Youtube is to the 21st century what vaudeville was to the early 20th century, or freak shows were to the 19th century.

OT: Rihanna's solo work in music now has won as many Grammys as her solo work in acting has won her Razzies - 1. And her Dance Recording win was so repugnant to certain voters that they overhauled the rules so such an atrocity would never happen again.

I noticed "Thrift Shop" is pulling away from "Harlem Shake" on Itunes, it is now about 30% ahead, and "When I Was Your Man" has almost caught up, so it could be a short reign for the YouTube sensation.
The amazing sales success of "Thrift Shop" seems to be continuing. If any song has a chance of matching the record of 13 weeks at #1 on the digital songs chart set by Low in 2008, it is "Thrift Shop".
