I suppose David Guetta's age needs to be updated. "Dangerous" is on the climb. Guetta will be turning 47 next week.

Found another I missed. Bette Midler turned 45 during the run of "From a Distance."

If James Newton Howard hits the Top 40 soon with "The Hanging Tree," he'll be 63 whopping years old.

In 1967, when "What A Wonderful World" was released - it did not chart well in the U.S. ((Which makes sense, as it was not a mainstream or contemporary 67-sounding song or style)) In early 1968 the song made #116 Pop in the U.S. In the U.K. it went #1.
In 1988, the song was re-released in the U.S. and reached #32 on the Hot 100. Surely, it must have made chr/pop in 1988...But then, do we count his age at the time of the recording (1967) or at 1988. This is just a re-release. Same thing with "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King (it was recorded in 1960, released in 1961 - and then became a hit again in the 80's) but that doesn't change his age when he recorded it. "Do You Love Me" by the Countours, from 1962, also was re-released in the 1980's after appearing in Dirty Dancing and became an 80's hit. Speaking of Dirty Dancing, Merry Clayton's "Yes" was released as a single and was a new song...That charted on chr/pop...Merry Clayton was 19 or 20 when she recorded the female part for "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones. So Merry would have been over forty when "Yes" became a hit. So add Merry Clayton to the list.
Also, from Footloose - "Let's Hear It For the Boy" by Deniece Williams. I know Deniece was recording in the 1960's, so she must have been up there in age as well.
Sue Thompson was a hit-maker in the pre-chr/pop days...but she certainly had some big hits on top 40 stations in the early 60's...In late 1964 when "Paper Tiger" was released, she was probably 42.
Dusty Springfield had to have charted on chr/pop with her duet with the Pet Shop Boys in the 1980's "What Have I Done to Deserve This." She was a member of the Lana Sisters and the Springfields...and went solo in 1963...so she might be one of the very oldest. But I do not think a re-release or a sample of an old recording, should be counted...as the artist was usually younger than forty when the record was made.
Btw, did B.B. King ever make chr/pop? How old was Ronnie Spector when she recorded "Take Me Home Tonight" by Eddie Money??

Also, Etta James' "Something's Gotta Hold On Me" is from 1961...not 1962. If we are counting samples, wasn't Della Humphreys' "Don't Make the Good Girls Go Bad" vocal used for the chorus of a Drake song recently? Did that make chr/pop? Otis Redding's vocals were sampled for "Otis"...
Dusty Springfield was 48 when "What Have I Done to Deserve This" was a chr/pop hit in 1987. A duet with the Pet Shop Boys. Ronnie Spector was 43 when she sang the "Be My Baby" hook to Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight"(which is not a sample of the recording she made at 20, she recorded new vocals for Eddie Money. She should definately count, although she is not listed as a featured artist - but everyone knew who it was since Eddie says "Just like Ronnie said.." Merry Clayton was 39...so she just missed out.

Does he get an asterisk for not being a vocalist, or (in the eyes of the public) even the lead artist? By label credit, James Newton Howard is, officially, considered the "lead artist" for the track. It's in much the same way that David Guetta, Calvin Harris, and many others if their ilk are credited as leads for their work.

Yes yes, but he's not facing the same challenges that other older artists face in charting on Pop. Stations spinning the song and people buying it couldn't care less who James Newton Howard is.

Pretty sure "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" had an official week in the Top 50 near the end of 2011. If so, Kiedis was 48 or 49 (depending on when it entered the Top 50), Flea was 49, and Chad Smith was 50. I stand corrected wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/rhcp.htmlStill not sure why you haven't added these guys onto your list yet.

Joe Cocker was 45 when "When The Night Comes" charted in early 1990.
And Jimmy Cliff was 46 in 1993 with "I Can't See Clearly Now."

Regardless, Dusty and Ronnie should be added. Dusty Springfield was 48 when "What Have I Done to Deserve This" was a chr/pop hit in 1987. A duet with the Pet Shop Boys. The Subway Fresh Buzz Song on AT40 this weekend will be "Don't Mess With Me" by Big Sean f/E-40. If that song debuts in January, E-40 will be 47.

This is just a re-release. Louis Armstrong was deceased at the time of its 1988 charting; this thread's list refers to artists charting while still living. Believe it or not, she didn't hit 40 until Christmas that very year (1988) when "Yes" peaked at that same number (a rarity in those times). So, with 40 as the cut-off, she misses the list by mere months.

James Horner was 44 when "Southampton" just barely squeaked into the 40 in 1998.
Kiki Dee was 46 in her duet with Elton John, "True Love," in 1993.

Kanye's "Only One" should, officially, debut tomorrow. That means we'll need to make mention of it's featured artist, Paul McCartney, who's 72.

Patti LaBelle turned 41 when "New Attitude" was charting. I think Patti should be listed for "On My Own" or maybe "Oh People."

Thank you. I've revised Paul McCartney and Patti LaBelle. And Paul had a BIG move up the chart to #1. Just heard his most recent hit "Free As A Bird" on Rick Dees' rebroadcast from this week in 1996.

How interesting...the same week Paul McCartney becomes the oldest act to hit top 50, James Newton Howard becomes the oldest act to hit top 10.

Johnny Mathis was 42 when "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" was released. Kenny Rogers was 45 during the run of "Islands in the Stream"… and he may have charted after that?

Kenny Rogers was 45 during the run of "Islands in the Stream"… and he may have charted after that? "What About Me" was his final CHR hit; its run was more-or-less the exact same time the following year. On that note, Kim Carnes turned 40 while "Crazy in the Night", her final CHR hit, was charting the year after that.

I think Jerry Garcia was 45 during the run of the Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey."
Benny Mardones was 42 during the second run of "Into the Night" but it may not have charted on CHR then?

Jerry indeed turned 45 just before the song hit the chart. And no, "Into the Night" did not chart a second time. That's a question still asked today, as to how/why that was the case.

I updated the following: Dusty, Ronnie (notes), Mathis, Snoop, Carnes, Wonder, Garcia, Dobie, Kenny, Enya, Carly and Mick. If they get label credit, it should count.
