omg can people stop with the same excuses.
people didn't like birthday. period. if they did then it would have sold well and had good callout scores and streaming (not talking about the video since the length decreased replayability, but other streaming like spotify).
animals was still huge on airplay when sugar was released yet sugar is still a big hit.

A bit like Shake It Off vs. Happy which both have a very similar-sounding beat.

But I am one of the people who likes "Sugar" but not "Birthday." Honestly, I don't hear many similarities, but then again I've avoided much of "Birthday" so maybe if I listened to them back to back I would hear the similarities? Regardless, I don't love "Sugar," I just think it's a decent song, so it's not like I love it and hate "Birthday." I'm just annoyed by the excuses that "Dark Horse" caused "Birthday" to flop, the video caused it to flop, etc. It's been a year, lol

I like Birthday a lot and the only thing I can think of as to why it didn't go top 10, is I think it's a relatable thing to the lyrics. Even tho the lyrics are good and make sense, your Birthday only comes around once/year. not that exciting to sing about treat me like it's my birthday today when it's not. maybe a part of the reason at least.

I'm just annoyed by the excuses that "Dark Horse" caused "Birthday" to flop, the video caused it to flop, etc. It's been a year, lol Yeah, I never bought that Dark Horse was responsible for Unconditionally and Birthday's performance. While radio sometimes is slow to move on to the next single for some acts after a huge hit, radio was totally on board for both of Unconditionally and Birthday until callout scores came in. Its kind of hard to describe what makes a song sound similar to another, and admittedly a lot of it is subjective. This mashup takes advantage of their similarities pretty well, though. Some of it is the lyrics. They're both talking about sugar/sweetness when actually referring to sex. The instrumentals can be switched with each other and the songs will work, like in this mashup of Sugar with Birthday's instrumental. Adam and Katy both sing in a high pitched falsetto during much of the song. There are also some portions of the song that have the same tune and rhythm. "Sugar, yes please, won't you come and put it down on me." vs. "So make, a wish, give you something good to celebrate." & "I'm hurting, baby, I'm broken down I need your loving, loving I need it now" vs. "I heard you're feeling nothing's going right Why don't you let me stop by?" Heck, the videos even have similar concepts with Katy/Maroon 5 crashing different celebrations (though I think Maroon 5 pulled it off better).

For many people, their birthday is the one day of year where they are the center of attention and everyone fawns all over them, so for Katy to sing 'I'll make it like your Birthday everyday," is perfectly relatable. If it had made the Top 10 no one would even question it. Had they waited a month and also released an single edit of the video, it would've made it, but they didn't and it was still a Top 20 hit. Still compared to Roar & DH, Birthday and the other singles pale - not even close. The Sugar video - made the song an instant Top 5 iTunes hit, which certainly paved the way for radio to add it even faster than normal. It would be great if Sugar hit #1, but I think sales/video points peaked far too early. Now if M5 performs it on TV, I could see a big boost.

Just some disconnect with singing about birthdays. But maybe not. I think it's a perfectly good pop song.

I like Birthday and Sugar but I really don't see much of a difference between the songs. I'm still baffled as to why Sugar is doing better than Birthday but maybe it just came down to timing on when the singles were released Anyways...I'm still rooting for TOL. I'm not giving up hope!! Fingers crossed!

Birthday is decent, but I do not get the hype about Sugar. Idk, I found the chorus really annoying :/ Same with Animals. Still annoyed Maps performed the weakest.
I also find the start of Sugar (some of the instrumentation) to be similar to Love Me Harder.

I think maybe people were just burned out on Katy Perry. The only songs that smashed off "Prism" were the ones that didn't really sound like her circa 2010. ("Unconditionally" was also a departure -- it just wasn't very catchy.)
It seems like Maroon 5 has a bit of a built-in audience right now, and Top 40 radio programmers love them. I just don't hear a #1 in "Sugar," or pretty much any song right now except _maybe_ LMLYD, but the big question there is how well the song survives the buzz over the movie fading. Right now it feels a lot like early spring last year: a feel-good throwback locked in for a months-long reign at the top, a stripped-down ballad holding down second place and patiently waiting its turn. That time, it lasted all the way until summer when "Fancy" ended up breaking out, but I don't hear any grabby "Fancy"-like hooks or Iggy Azalea newcomer narratives at the moment.

Well since UF can't hold out until a song completely reveals itself as the next number one, it looks like Sugar is the next likely candidate considering it is almost guaranteed to peak at 3, minimum imo.

Well, if the recent charts have taught us anything, it's that we shouldn't underestimate just how long the same songs can hold down the top two. But Maroon 5 are also the ones who gave us the all-time champ with a _nine-week_ placeholder #1 that never really felt like a #1 hit, so there's that.

I was disappointed in Style's initial performance after the video was released but now I'm happy that it will be top ten hit nevertheless.. She hasn't had too many third singles reaching top ten (because her album sales are so huge)
