Wow, I definitely remember disliking a lot of songs last year, but I had no idea that it was THAT bad compared to the rest of the decade. Maybe the fact that I was in college from 2010-2014 has something to do with it.

Here's the years ranked in my opinion: 1-2015 2-2013 3-2014 (don't really get why people don't like that year)4-2012 5-2011 6-2010 If I had to rank 2016 so far, it'd be below 2012, but there's still another half left to go so we'll see. In my opinion, 2014 barely had any excellent songs, and a bunch of mediocre s**t. Not to mention that I find there to be a fair amount of bad songs in 2014 too, and the top 8 or so on my worst list (if I were to make one) I find to be AWFUL.  Just my opinion though. |

I loved 2014. Dunno how I'd rank 2012, 2011, and 2010 but they would be below 2014 and 2013. 2015 was good too.

Since I consider Thinking Out Loud to be 2015 because of 2015 being its most successful year, that means 2014 really had no excellent. Sure, Black Widow, Ain't It Fun and Boom Clap (my opinion) are really good/great. Nothing else really stands out as great. 2015 was a major step above 2014. I can look back at 2015 and say that almost every week was a great week for the top 10 (when it comes to the songs in it). 2014, ugh. Most weeks had songs that weren't that great. Oh, and Not A Bad Thing (my opinion) is a really good/great song. Also, 2016 looks like it will be a better year than 2015  |

1. 2011 - Very nostalgic for me and I loved the dancepop dominance
2. 2014 - Many of my favorite songs are huge throughout this year
3. 2013 - Lots of great releases during the second half of the year, first half was bland
4. 2015 - Some good hits from last year but many songs were overexposed for me (UF, TOL, SYA, SUAD)
5. 2012 - There's only a handful of songs that I enjoyed that year, 2012 was extremely boring musically
6. 2010 - Other than albums from my favorite pop divas (The Fame Monster, Teenage Dream and Loud), 2010 gets lost between the great years of 2009 and 2011.

2014 was perfect for me because it was when all my favourite artists were popular (Ariana, John, Sia, Katy, One Republic, Lorde, etc). I really liked the sound of music as well - from Am I Wrong to Rude, to Pompeii to Team. After that (or more around summer 2015, I loved the first half), songs began to become unbeatable. Certain EDM songs, tropical house, Justin Bieber, etc.

One day I got bored, so I decided to take a plane to somewhere random. Once I landed there, I found this pill. I took that pill. I didn't know where I was until I looked at a map. Then I found out that I Took A Pill In Ibiza. I didn't know to feel. So I decided to go take a nice relaxing trip to the ocean. It was fun. I was eating Cake By The Ocean, I was jumping in the ocean. But then it became night, so I went home. I was tired, so I went to sleep. There was no PILLOWTALKing that night because I already had fallen asleep. In the morning, I decided that I should look in the mirror for some reason. I saw me, myself & I. It was weird, so I said "NO!" and then left. It was so weird that I was looking directly at myself. It's like I had a clone of me or something. The whole situation got me Stressed Out. At that point I thought, "I need to get some fresh air." So, I left My House and went to the ocean again. I saw this hot girl and I asked her, "Hey you look pretty, you wanna date?". She said "WTF?!?!? Go Love Yourself". 7 Years later, I still haven't returned to that ocean.
Man, writing all of that took a lot of Work.

Once, I Took A Pill In Ibiza and it got me so f**ked up that I ended up eating 1000 lbs of Cake By The Ocean. Then, my mom came and stopped me, saying "NO! That's enough cake for you!", to which I responded "Come on, Mom! I'm not 7 Years old anymore! The only person who should be making my decisions for me is Me, Myself & I!". Later that evening, I returned to My House and decided to call my girlfriend and tell her I needed to have some Pillowtalk with her, but since she had to get up really early for Work the next day, she told me "sorry, babe, I'm really Stressed Out now so you're just gonna have to Love Yourself for tonight..."

Apparently 2015 edges it for me using the Hot 100 of the year method. Might just be a reflection of me following the charts somewhat closer in 2015:
2015: 28
2011: 23
2014: 22
2013: 21
2010: 20
2012: 15
Overall, the sound of the chart really hasn't changed much this decade.

Honestly, since the "merger" of R&B, Pop and EDM in the late 00's very very little has happened in terms of evolving the sound of the charts. Sure, there are somewhat different styles within "the merger", but overall much hasn't happened. There hasn't really been any huge fads. Dubstep was here for a bit, but really quickly got merged into the overall pop sound. While rock artists can still sell albums, it is almost a dead genre when it comes to the charts. I wonder when a new rock sound will make a splash. I'm sure it will happen at some point. |
