Lol Needed Me is ahead of Work on iTunes Where did 1999, Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, and When Doves cry peak on the Hot 100? When Doves Cry kept Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen from going to #1. It spent 4 weeks at #2 I believe. Interesting sidenote...Theres no bass line in When Doves Cry.

Combined/weighted iTunes popularity:
"Purple Rain" 1.000 "7 Years" 0.2093
Continuing to extend its lead, I'm not sure how much it'll need to sell to get into the top 10 though. It'll have some streaming from youtube videos I believe and should have airplay (Airplay is from Monday-Sunday still right? So it'll have 4 days worth of airplay which I think will be significant).

I think the Prince songs will die down like David Bowie pretty quickly.

Is that true that all of the Prince songs will reenter the Hot 100 next week? Is that true that Rihanna's Work might be stop working if Purple Rain manages to the top or just only Top 5 or Top 10 again? I think some music videos for Prince might bring back to YouTube for bringing back some streaming.

I think the Prince songs will die down like David Bowie pretty quickly. Prince has a deeper hits catalog than David Bowie and is also younger. No one has dominated iTunes like this since Michael Jackson. This could go longer than the usual couple days

Wondering if all of the albums for Prince might bring back on Spotify for streaming, too. I wonder last 3 months when David Bowie hit the Top 40 on BB Hot 100 since 1987. I think it looks like only a few Prince songs that re-enter the BB Hot 100 or at recurrent chart, but not all. In July 2009, after Michael Jackson's death, none of the songs re-entered on BB Hot 100 but on BB Hot 100 Recurrent Chart. In February to March 2012, only four songs (that already Top 40 hit) of Whitney Houston re-entered the Hot 100 after her death. For February 25, 2012 chart, it has 3 songs (all are re-enter the Top 40 once again): I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Greatest Love Of All. For March 3, 2012 chart, only one song re-enter not from Top 40 but Hot 100: How Will I Know. In January 2016, only one song that already a Top 40 hit (plus two new songs) from David Bowie re-entered the BB Hot 100 once again. For January 30, 2016 chart, only one song that re-entered: Space Oddity, while his two new songs from Blackstar have enter the Hot 100 (one for Top 40 for the first time since 1987, the other one is charted outside Top 40): Lazarus and Blackstar.

If Prince can get Purple Rain into the Top 5, it will be a miracle.

If Prince could hit the Top 40 since 1999, then I was afraid if May 5, 2016 BB Hot 100 or May 12, 2016 BB Hot 100 may be affected due to few Prince's songs. All of them are re-enter, but never afraid on Recurrent Chart. I was afraid too that Rihanna might topple down from number one if Prince's Purple Rain have finally have a chance at number one and Purple Rain might become the first song that will finally hit the number one after peaked last few years from #2 above.

I know Wildest Dreams did it at #15 but I dunno if anything was higher. Also, funny that he hasn't been Top 40 since 1999, because that is one of his songs. Ravi

I think the Prince impact will be bigger than Bowie... I'm curious if there are any of his songs that might actually get new peaks?
Also, has Adele given up on 25? I'm baffled at the disinterest in promoting any new songs. I'm hoping Water Under the Bridge gets a shot.

When was the last time that happened? Pretty sure never I think you're right - you and I talked about it when Adele's 25 came out, and the most we found was 7 (maybe 8 for MJ) at once after Michael Jackson's death and the album releases for 1989 and 25.

I think the Prince impact will be bigger than Bowie... I'm curious if there are any of his songs that might actually get new peaks? If you mean specifically new peaks for previously-charted singles, I doubt it. All of his biggest sellers on iTunes currently already have top 20 peaks. There's an outside chance he could have a new entry with a song that didn't previously chart ("Darling Nikki" is currently the highest of those on iTunes), but I wouldn't bet on that. Still, it's hard to say what kind of sales he'll see, how long radio airplay will stay elevated, and what kind of tributes and programming might help sustain future sales, so we'll see how it all unfolds on the charts. What's the highest re-entry on the Hot 100? I know Wildest Dreams did it at #15 but I dunno if anything was higher. Coincidentally, I just mentioned this tune in last week's thread. The highest Hot 100 reentry is the #4 reentry of "Control Myself" by LL Cool J feat. Jennifer Lopez after its first week of digital sales availability. That record was later tied by the Grammys-fueled reentry of Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice".

Would it be possible for Purple Rain to block Panda this week? Or at least get close? It's currently outselling it more than 5 to 1, and that lead will grow even more in the next few hours. Or is Panda's streaming too much to overcome? If not #1, can it possibly reach the top 10?

tbh even with the massive itunes leads I think that the fact that there's little streaming or youtube won't help the chart positions

Airplay will be a disadvantage too. Even if "Purple Rain" manages to sell 100k tonight, that might not even be enough for a top 10 re-entry.

Work was #20 on iTunes at this time yesterday, now it's #51... that's some power right there.

Almost every song, that isn't a Prince song, on the top 100 in sales at the moment is in red. Wow

Here's the catch - if Prince's songs were on Spotify, I bet sales wouldn't be this insane. It's too bad The Most Beautiful Girl in the World is not available in any form, which was truly his last major sales and airplay hit. I Hate You did peak at 12, but that was sales because airplay (and promotion was low). I'd love to see Darling Nikki and Erotic City chart (finally).
EDIT: So now on YouTube people are uploading Prince vidoes. Will they stay? Will they count for streaming?
