I am not sure where else to post this, but it's so cool I think it's worth sharing. This is an animated visual of the Hot 100 top 5, which shows songs climbing/falling over time: polygraph.cool/history/

One thing not yet mentioned in this radio deals discussion is that the songs that are given radio deals tend to be used to benefit radio stations. It's not like labels/artists are "buying" the airtime. It's a mutually beneficial deal. When a big-name act releases a new single, stations want to jump on that single to ensure they're first in getting it heard by their audiences. So when JT drops a new song, stations want their listeners to know they can tune in at a particular time the day it's released to hear it first.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7358100/drake-hot-100-record-20-simultaneous-hits-one-danceAs his new album 'Views' debuts atop the Billboard 200 and its single "One Dance" roars to No. 1 on the Hot 100, the rapper/singer adds a historic honor, posting a record-shattering 20 songs on the Hot 100. As if debuting atop the Billboard 200 with his new album, Views, and scoring his first No. 1 as a lead artist on the Billboard Hot 100 with Views single "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, weren't enough, Drake makes history on the Hot 100, as he places a record-breaking 20 titles on the new May 21 tally, the most that any act has charted on the ranking in one week. Drake passes the 17 songs that Justin Bieber boasted on the Dec. 5 Hot 100. That sum bested the 14 each that the Beatles logged on April 11, 1964, and that, guess who, Drake earned on the March 7 and Oct. 17 charts in 2015. Here are Drake's unprecedented 20 songs on the latest Hot 100, including 16 debuts, also a one-week record for one artist (passing Bieber's 13 debuts on Dec. 5). Of his 20 titles, 18 are from Views: No. 1, "One Dance," feat. WizKid & Kyla (up from No. 2) No. 6, "Work," Rihanna feat. Drake (holds at No. 6) No. 21, "Pop Style," feat. The Throne (up from No. 40) No. 33, "Hype" (NEW) No. 34, "Controlla" (NEW) No. 38, "Grammys," feat. Future (NEW) No. 40, "Still Here" (NEW) No. 44, "U With Me?" (NEW) No. 45, "9" (NEW) No. 47, "With You," feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR (NEW) No. 49, "Childs Play" (NEW) No. 52, "Too Good," feat. Rihanna (NEW) No. 53, "Feel No Ways" (NEW) No. 54, "Weston Road Flows" (NEW) No. 61, "Redemption" (NEW) No. 68, "Keep the Family Close" (NEW) No. 72, "Faithful," feat. Pimp C & dvsn (NEW) No. 75, "Fire & Desire" (NEW) No. 86, "Views" (NEW) No. 89, "Summer Sixteen" (down from No. 73) With 18 of Drake's 20 concurrent Hot 100 entries from Views, his 16 debuts join the set's "Dance" and "Pop Style" on the chart. ("Work" and "Summer Sixteen" are not on Views.) And, of the 20 songs on the album, all but two place on the chart this week: "Summers Over Interlude" and earlier smash "Hotline Bling," which reached No. 2 last year, are not on this week's chart. Drake sets the mark for most simultaneous Hot 100 hits thanks in large part to streaming, with his debuts driven almost entirely by the metric, as Views was available for streaming through Apple Music and, while it was on sale through the iTunes Store in the tracking week, only "Dance" and "Pop Style" were available for a la carte purchase. As previously reported, Views' songs were streamed a record 245.1 million times in the U.S. during the tracking week. That sum includes plays of the album's songs on Apple Music, as well as the handful of songs from the set that were available at other streaming services, such as Spotify. (On May 6, Views became available for purchase through digital retailers other than iTunes and its physical CD was also released.) Like Drake this week, Bieber claimed the record (which he held for more than five months) for the most simultaneous Hot 100 hits (and debuts) concurrent with the arrival of his latest album, Purpose, atop the Billboard 200. All of the songs on the standard version and 17 of the 18 songs on the deluxe edition of the album placed on the Dec. 5 chart. The Beatles had held the mark for the most songs on the Hot 100 in a single week for more than 50 years, posting 14 on the April 11, 1964, chart at the height of Beatlemania (led by "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Twist and Shout" at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively; the prior week, the Fab Four had locked up the entire top five, a feat that no artist has since matched). Last year, Drake twice totaled 14 Hot 100 concurrent hits, powered by the entrances of his two Billboard 200 No. 1s before Views: If You're Reading This It's Too Late and What a Time to Be Alive (the latter with Future). Additionally, with 16 debuts, Drake ups his count to 123 career Hot 100 entries, passing Elvis Presley, with 108, for the third-most in the chart's history, which dates to its launch on Aug. 4, 1958 -- notably, two years into Presley's iconic career. The cast of Fox's Glee leads with 207 appearances, followed by Lil Wayne, with 130. Also notably: the Glee cast showed as the lead act on all 207 of its Hot 100 entries and Presley was the lead on all 108 of his. In an era in which featured rappers are commonplace, Lil Wayne has been the lead act on 46 of his Hot 100 hits (35 percent) and Drake has been the lead on 78 of his (63 percent).

That's cool for Drake, but I don't think Billboard should even compare current stats to stats from the 90s, let alone 20 years ago. Between the rule changes, feature credits, etc. it's apples and oranges at this point.

#16 Beyoncé - Hold Up #19 Beyoncé - Formation Is "Hold Up" higher due to streaming? "Formation" should have higher sales and airplay, no?

It sure is, jeng.
Here are Rihanna's top 10s broken down- of course they all count toward her total, but it's interesting to break it down (any corrections are welcome; "S&M" is a solo entry for purposes of top 10 hits; if it were a listing of No. 1 hits, it would be "Rihanna Featuring...")

Considering the Glee songs were sung by a different array of lead singers, I find this to be an odd distinction. 2. Having said that, I like the general distinction and wonder why they haven't mentioned it in relation to Rihanna's #1s.

It's no different than a solo song produced by an non-featured producer.

Between the rule changes, feature credits, etc. it's apples and oranges at this point. Yeah, but the same could be said for many changes in the H100's history. This may be a more drastic example now... but there's always been changes that make it apples to oranges - especially since soundscan hit. I'm agreeing with you - but I'm a believer that it's never really been apples to apples. The nature of the H100 is really a snapshot of one week only, not meant to be tallied and compared to any other week - formally.

^That would be the case with two tracks- the current one and "We Found Love." But, in terms of Billboard's all-time list, Rihanna gets 70% of WFL's total points, for its week-to-week performance.
I removed the lead credit note, as adding up the sole and R Featuring adds up to 21. :)
This era of featurings and digital/streaming is a whole 'nother animal to when acts would rack up chart entries the old-fashioned way (commercial singles and/or radio singles).

So another week or two before the upper half of the hot 100 settles down. The bottom of the chart might be weird for awhile though; Drake's album cuts tend to linger a bit thanks to streaming. But with no more Bieber, Drake, Beyonce, Kendrick, or Taylor Swift on the horizon we might actually get back to some sustained normalcy for the rest of the year! Or at least until that new Fetty Wap is out...

Did Justin debut based on airplay? He sold +250k in 3 days! :o JT'S "FIGHT" CLUB (UPDATE)"Can't Stop the Feeling," Justin Timberlake's bouncy new single (from the forthcoming DreamWorks animated feature Trolls) remains in the #1 perch at iTunes after a splashy debut last week. Not only that, but the song has already sold 250k+ downloads since bowing on Friday and is on track to surpass ZAYN for the year's best-selling single debut. It's also storming the U.S. and global Spotify charts. How big will this song get? Is a #1 debut a possibility?

Separate from this week, but I was looking up something and noticed that in 2008 5 different songs fell from #1 only to return back to #1!! 3 of them spent 3 different trips at #1. That year was crazy!

Mostly I just don't understand why, when Billboard has made the distinction of lead and feature on plenty of chart stats including this latest one, and when they don't give full chart points on a collaboration as you mention, they have never mentioned the distinction for Rihanna's #1s.

Here's an example from when WMN hit #1 in 2010: "What's My Name?" marks Rihanna's eighth career Hot 100 No. 1 and third this year. She previously reigned in 2010 with "Rude Boy" (five weeks, beginning in March) and as a guest on Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" (seven weeks, starting in July).
Rihanna is the first artist to score a trio of Hot 100 leaders in a year since she achieved the feat in 2008, when she ruled with her own "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia" and added vocals to T.I.'s "Live Your Life."______________________________________ and an excerpt from when Diamonds went #1: Here is a recap of Rihanna's dozen dominators on the Hot 100:
2006, "SOS" (three weeks at No. 1) 2007," Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z (seven) 2008, "Take a Bow" (one) 2008, "Disturbia" (two) 2008, "Live Your Life" (T.I. featuring Rihanna) (six) 2010, "Rude Boy" (five) 2010, "Love the Way You Lie" (Eminem featuring Rihanna) (seven) 2010, "What's My Name?," featuring Drake (one) 2010, "Only Girl (In the World)" (one) 2011, "S&M," featuring Britney Spears (one) 2011, "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris (10) 2012, "Diamonds" (one to date)
_________________________________________ Looking at a couple weekly write-ups for "Work", they're more focused on listing where she is on the all-time leaderboard, not an individual list of her #1 songs like above. They do however mention her Eminem features in the text part of the write up below the artist ranking.

I know, broc- was just noting the instances of a "featuring" credit (in one way or another) that only had lead Rihanna vocals on it.
