ARIA Revamps Charts, Launches New Logo
News
By Lars Brandle | October 26, 2018 5:27 AM EDT
When the Australian charts are published this weekend, the weekly countdowns will have a new look, a new feel and, importantly, a new methodology.
ARIA, the charts compiler, is refreshing its national sales and consumption surveys by applying a fresh multi-level streaming methodology.
Currently, all streams are treated equally but, going forward, ARIA will reward streams from paid subscriptions more than those from ad-supported services or programmed platforms. It’s all part of an international movement to measure streams in a “revenue-reflective and access-based manner,” ARIA explains.
The changes will apply to all its singles and albums charts calculations, and will be reflected for the first time in the charts for the week ending Saturday, Oct. 27.
“As the way Australian fans listen to their favorite music continues to evolve, it has always been important that the ARIA Charts reflect what is happening in the marketplace,” comments ARIA CEO Dan Rosen in a statement. “These changes ensure that the ARIA Charts remain the most comprehensive and trusted Charts in Australia." ARIA didn’t break down the calculations for its new streaming approach.
Earlier this year, Billboard’s charts evolved with a change where plays from paid subscription-based services took on a greater weight than programmed and content played on ad-supported services or on the non-paid tiers of hybrid paid/ad-supported platforms.
To throw a spotlight on the revamped Australian tallies, ARIA has launched a fresh logo that represents “longevity in the marketplace and the past, present and future of the ARIA Charts,” Rosen explains.
ARIA has published Australia’s national charts each week for more than 35 years. The trade body published its first survey — then the Countdown Chart — on July 10, 1983. Bonnie Tyler’s "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" lead the first singles chart and Michael Jackson’s Thriller was the first No. 1 on the albums chart. The singles chart evolved in November 2014 with the inclusion of on-demand streams, and the albums chart followed suit in May 2017.

Dua Lipa debuts at #27 with ‘We’re Good’. The track comes from the deluxe edition of the British singer-songwriter’s second album, Future Nostalgia (#1 Apr. ’20) entitled The Moonlight Edition. ‘We’re Good’ is the fifth Future Nostalgia track to hit the ARIA Top 50.

Plus, moves by Cardi B, Masked Wolf and more! In its twelfth week in the Top 50, ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animals hits #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart for the first time. The track, which topped the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020 in January, becomes the British band’s first chart-topping single anywhere in the world. They’re the first British group to top the Singles Chart since Clean Bandit spent six weeks at #1 in 2016/7 with ‘Rockabye’ (#1 Dec. ’16).
On hearing of their #1, Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley said:
“Can’t believe this. This was never the intention when we started this album….the goal was to write some songs that maybe made someone feel less alone for a moment when they needed it. Thats what my favourite songs do for me at least. The messages, kind words, art and other creative responses to this album have gone beyond all of our wildest dreams. That makes this number one endlessly meaningful. Australia - you have been home to many firsts for us - and this is another one. Thank you, we miss you, and we will be there asap. I actually have the dates pencilled in my calendar. We will celebrate together then. x”
‘Up’, the follow-up to Cardi B’s chart-topping ‘WAP’ (#1 Aug. ’20), climbs seven spots to hit #12 in its third week on the chart. It takes over from ‘I Like It’ (#14 Jul.’18) as the American rapper’s second-highest chart peak. To date, ‘Up’ has peaked at #2 in the US.
ARIA Award winner Amy Shark takes out her first new Singles Chart entry for 2021 as she debuts at #22 with the Keith Urban-featured track ‘Love Songs Ain't For Us’. Co-written with Ed Sheeran, it’s the fourth single released from Shark’s forthcoming second album, Cry Forever, which is set for release in April. The album will also include previous single ‘Everybody Rise’ (#31 Sept. ’20).
After debuting at #47 last week, Sydney rapper Masked Wolf climbs 22 spots to #25 with ‘Astronaut In The Ocean’. The track was originally released in mid-2019 before being re-released in January of this year. As well as charting here in Australia, it has begun to make waves on charts in the US, UK and across Europe.
German DJ/producer ATB hits the ARIA Top 50 for the first time in over 20 years at #45 with ‘Your Love (9pm)’. It’s a reworking of ‘9pm ('Till I Come)’ (#10 Jun. ’99) that sees ATB teams up with fellow German DJ/producer Topic and Swedish singer A7S. The original was ATB’s highest chart peak in Australia.
Jumping into the chart at #50, Polo G makes his Singles Chart debut with ‘Martin & Gina’. The track comes from the American rapper’s second album The Goat (#10 May ’20). The title is a reference to characters from the 1990s sitcom Martin, starring Marin Lawrence.
