The answer is, as with a lot of things affecting the charts in this era, streaming. Namely, streaming has gone increasingly mainstream as time has gone on, and with more of the general public on services, including those in the 40+ age range, there's a bigger audience looking both for classic songs and ease of use. The services know this, with both Apple and Spotify having their Christmas sets up close (Apple Music has their Essential Christmas playlist on the front page of New along with a Holiday banner, Spotify has Happy Holidays as the second Genre/Mood only past the year-end set Wrapped 2018). This boost along with the usual support on sales and gradual buildup on radio has led to songs climbing higher and faster than before.

Streaming numbers are a lot bigger because more people are streaming. I thought billboard would weigh song purchases more than streams though... Why would they do that? Way more people are streaming and way less people are buying from iTunes.

Streaming numbers are a lot bigger because more people are streaming.Β I thought billboard would weigh song purchases more than streams though... Why? Here's a good example from HITS song revenue chart: 7 4 MARIAH CAREY ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU EPIC $144,370 26% Sales: 15,500 $14,105 Streams: 18,071,000 $130,265 90% of the revenue last week came from streaming. Sales continue to diminish in relevance. That's why the whole discounting call for chart placement is not only outdated, but also bad for business. It's better to have people continue to stream and consistently produce revenue and count for chart placement over multiple weeks. A purchase only count for one chart week and a one-time revenue generation. Streaming is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

As long as they are in the top 50 and gaining in at least 2 different segments (e.g. streaming, radio, sales).

Yeah, but the real question being asked is why more holiday songs are charting this year in particular, and at higher positions than ever. Because Billboard has a way of measuring that theyβve never had before. Itβs only Billboard that sees holiday songs as more popular. I doubt thereβs too much difference year after year overall.

Breathin' is killing it on airplay considering that "Thank u next" is competing with it.
I wonder how well it'd do on radio if "Thank u next" was released a bit later

I think the placement of Holiday playlists on the streaming services is a major factor. If those playlists were not prominently on display, I don't think some people would be out searching for the song.

Waiting for Santa Tell Me to return t o Hot 100. It doesn't look like it will happen this year. "Underneath the Tree" isn't on the Hot 100 (and is low on Bubbling Under if I remember right) and is #18 on the Holiday 100. "Santa Tell Me" is #28 on the Holiday 100, so it isn't even close to the Hot 100.

I feel like it's featured on a lot of holiday playlists too, wonder what's lacking for it to at least be more near the list. With Grande's popularity right now I would have imagined it in the Top 40 for Christmas.

This is all true to an extent, but the streaming positions for holiday songs are higher than ever so they do seem to be more popular this year than the past few years. Along with streaming's growth in numbers, its demographics are also expanding/diversifying. The age of the average streamer is ticking upward with each passing year, which, to me, makes it logical that holiday music would have a stronger presence on the streaming charts because of it. The holiday playlists on platforms like Spotify are undoubtedly very popular with holiday parties and businesses/workplaces - often replacing radio or "owned" music plays in these scenarios, thus increasing streams and chart power of holiday songs - specifically in relation to current hits. ...that, and Billboard changed the rules to allow these songs to chart in the past few years. As long as they are in the top 50 and gaining in at least 2 different segments (e.g. streaming, radio, sales). Yeah, but the real question being asked is why more holiday songs are charting this year in particular, and at higher positions than ever. lol. *shrugs* I'd also add to my previous posts on this topic that this year's strong holiday song showing on the H100 isn't out of nowhere. Holiday songs have been performing better for a few years now, increasingly so, give or take how strong the current hits are. This growth - especially this year - is in-line with streaming's growth and diversification. There is research on streaming growth and demographics out there if anyone needs some convincing. Maybe it'll take until next year to convince some that this isn't a fluke or a random Christmas miracle - and it will likely continue until streaming plateaus - or if and when (god forbid) there's some tinkering with the formula and/or chart rules again.

Spotify play alone can't get most songs on the chart; it's getting 4-5 million streams a week from Spotify, but probably not much at all from YouTube. How does she do at Apple Music and others? Also "STM" is in the 80s at iTunes, and its airplay is probably minimal (Top 40 radio doesn't play much holiday music until the week of Christmas, and I doubt it has support from AC).
