Can you imagine a full Christmas top 10 in the years to come. It's very possible as streaming becomes more and more widespread, and if Billboard keeps allowing holiday songs to chart. I could also see the rule changing again, though, especially if holiday songs truly take over. I'm not sure labels are going to want to see their current hits get overshadowed so much. Imagine current hits not getting to #1 because of holiday songs? That will lead to a rule change.

Undoubtedly it would, and while it might please the labels, it would be yet another thing making the chart inaccurate and another reason for me to not care about the Hot 100.

Anyway, as to the WHY of the Christmas overload this year: streaming is up. It's up across all Christmas songs across all platforms, and this is something that's going to continue as streaming reaches broader audiences. Christmas music is the one genre that transcends all demographics. The more people stream, the higher the streams for said Christmas songs. Plus, every stream counts. Back when digital sales ruled the roost, if you bought AIWFCIY in 2006, that's it. It only counted in 2006. You download wouldn't matter come the 2010 holidays. But streaming allows the songs to come back every single year.
Plus, I don't know about the other platforms, but Spotify has a plethora of new Christmas playlists this year and everytime you refresh the front page, you get new ones. Each time I'm on the Browse section, I have at least two Christmas playlists present and I've seen nearly 10 or so different ones. And as I'm sure you can guess, the big players are on nearly every single one.

I wonder how much better "AIWFCIY" would chart if all versions counted toward the main one. Her 2010 remix and the Bieber duet are charting separately, presumably because of label issues.

Another example of Billboard inconsistencies - there’s no reason not to join these. But for the label issues, is it that different than remixes that have different catalog numbers? I was surprised to see the ‘Extra Festive’ version on the Holiday 100. If Billboard decides to suppress Holiday songs again (due to label pressure) because they are somehow flooding chart, then I’d argue they need to something similar for album bombs - which really distort the chart. At least old holiday songs chart because they hit all 3 metrics - and hit em hard to make top 50.

I think it's standard to separate items in those cases. Well, it would be Billboard deciding it based on industry wishes. My guess would be labels would want album bombs reflected on the chart, but I could be wrong.

OMG. This bitch actually did it again. There are whistle notes in it. Imagine is definitely one of Ariana’s best songs, if not her best. I like it better than Thank U, Next and definitely see this getting the promo and attention it needs to be #1 on the 12/29 chart, and that’s the tea sis GN.

I love the song but I don’t really think it’s *number one material*. It’s not an official single and Ariana doesn’t seem to be too keen on promoting it. A top 15/20 debut isn’t out of reach though.

I think in this case, the version with Bieber would be more of a ‘cover’ of the original, even though it’s also by Mariah, rather than a remix like, for example, Cheap Thrills. This version came 16 years after the original and was part of an entirely different project.

I know you didn't - I did! LOL. It's not that big of a deal in this case because the overwhelming streaming, sales and radio are going to original. As far as comparing the Beiber version - is that really that different than merging say Bad Blood or GLY? Heck BB (remix) even counted for 1989 SPS despite the fact the version never appeared on the album - that's the kind of inconsistencies I was getting at with Billboard's rules. But that's another story. Regarding this week's chart, I'm a bit surprised that Republic didn't do anything special to try to boost "Breathin'" in to H100 Top 10 before release of Imagine. Look like another Into You. It is doing shocking well on radio considering TUN's amazing sprint up chart and that GIAW is still in Top 40 overall.

The \m/ almost leads me to believe that he’s releasing a rock song/collabing with a rock artist. He posted pics with Metallica a few days ago too.

Wow so two of the three biggest artists of the year releasing new songs in the last two weeks of the calendar year?? I guess you have to cash in while you’re “hot”, is there no such thing as overexposure in the streaming age?

Random af, but the only US #1's of the decade that didn't crack the UK top 10 are:
"Imma Be" - The Black Eyed Peas (#55) "Raise Your Glass" - P!nk (#13) "Set Fire to the Rain" - Adele (#11) "Bad and Boujee" - Migos & Lil Uzi Vert (#30) "That's What I Like" - Bruno Mars (#12) "Bodak Yellow" - Cardi B (#24)

I don’t think it’s about Billboard being inconsistent by choice; it’s about the versions being on different labels. The versions would have different “catalog numbers,” and it’s very likely each label wants to track the stats for its version.

I still don't understand posters here who are obsessed with the year-end charts. I've been following the Hot 100 for 30+ years. I rarely remember any of the year-end Top 10s. Link to Wikpedia that lists the year-end Hot 100 charts: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End2016: #6 Panda; #7 Hello.... that pretty much sums up the arbitrary (and irrelevant) nature of Billboard’s YE list. Yeah Hello was huge in 2016 but it's three biggest weeks were in 2015, while Panda had it's entire run in 2016.

Yeah, it’s not that different but what I meant was that the song was released as part of a separate campaign nearly two decades later so I think it’s totally understandable that it not be counted as the same single.

OT: I had a dream the other night that on Christmas week, All I Want For Christmas is You went #1 and High Hopes was #2 that same week. "Mariah Carey blocked Panic! At the Disco from the #1 spot" would be the craziest fucking headline ever.

Drake and Swae Lee are now credited for SICKO MODE on iTunes but not Spotify or the Youtube Audio. If Drake did get credited on Billboard at some point, I wonder whether they would count it for his #1s since it's the same song at the one that hit #1, no remixes.

It would only count the weeks he was credited, much like Beyonce on the "Perfect" remix.

The Beyonce version of Perfect was a different recording though, not just different attribution. Seems like a different case.
