What if "Just For Now" and "Takes Two" were released to kinda test the waters for how they would potentially be received as singles? "Takes Two" really shouldn't be anywhere near radio imo, but it has made it onto Spotify/Apple Music playlists so that might be an indicator. While "Just For Now" sounds like something that could potentially do really well as a single! It wouldn't necessarily involve ending the era, since she kinda just shoe-horned those songs onto the end of GIRL on streaming services, lol. According to this thread, "Just for Now" was at #1 on the main Apple Music country playlist a week ago; I don't see "Takes Two" listed on either major playlist though. But yes, I think "Just for Now" would certainly be a viable single option if throwing those onto the end of the record was an indication of them wanting to try something fresh. There's several better selections on the original record, however, and I'd rather any of these be issued instead: The Feels All My Favorite People A Song for Everything Flavor Gold Love I still don't get releasing this over "A Song for Everything" if they wanted a slower one. That just sounded like a big smash to me. It's more appealing to radio, has a strong more relatable hook, and already had moved the needle upon release more than "To Hell & Back" ever did. At this point though, an uptempo is probably the way to go and while I'd prefer the Brothers Osborne duet as it + "A Song" sounded like the two most obvious hits on the record, them launching a new era might hinder its chances. I still think it might be ultimately worth it though because personally I can see "All Night" co-existing with it just fine and that one might flame out early like many of their singles often do, whereas I think "All My Favorite People" would probably give them their first #1 hit and up their radio momentum. If not, any of "The Feels," "Flavor," and "Gold Love" are catchy bops that are just sitting right there.

Yeah this song needs to be pulled asap, as Maren Morris is back another spot to #46 on Mediabase and has the second lowest bullet of all the songs being promoted in the Top 50 with only Jon Langston having a higher bullet

Send this one to hell and don't bring it back.
Kidding - I like the song. But it does need to get pulled.

Crazy how she went from the success of the Bones to this. I did not like this single choice at all and neither did radio apparently
I keep hearing Just For Now as youtube randomly plays songs and I think they should go with that as her next single and drop this

Good news: "To Hell & Back" sets a new peak of #44 on Mediabase
Bad News: Everything Else, this song got no adds last week on Mediabase, this song only gained 3 spins having the 5th lowest bullet of all the songs in the Top 50. Unlike with say a Tenille Arts, the label stands nothing to gain by keeping this song alive since I imagine with the correct single choice Maren Morris could easily be in the Top 40 within a couple months at most, but this single unfortunately just isn't it.

This song is a total non-event and a bad single pick so none of this is shocking

Yeah, they need to pull this ASAP. On MB, Tenille entered Top 40 with a bullet of 146 while Maren only has a bullet of 3 and still is struggling to get in. Kelsea is also climbing quickly with a bullet of 104 and will jump ahead of this very soon (the audience is also already much higher).
On BB, Maren dropped down to 47 while Tenille and Kelsea jumped several positions (41 and 45).
This song is basically on lifeline right now and I'm dismayed/annoyed at her team/label for not pulling it already when it's clearly not clicking. Hole in the Bottle was immediately sent at the end of May after her team/label realized TOG was flopping massively and it's already above this and Kelsea was also coming off an underperformance with HQ. That speaks volumes tbh. The Bones' strong performance is simply not an excuse anymore at this point. Sad to see this straight-up flopping but...it's time to move on.

This is getting the "I'd Be Jealous Too" treatment. Radio wouldn't stop playing "Small Town Boy" and completely kicked its follow up even as recurrent play went down. The only difference here is that "To Hell & Back" is actually a good song.

This is my least favorite track on the album and it's clear radio isn't into it either.
I don't get why they haven't released All My Favorite People, The Feels or Flavor. All upbeat and very catchy.

I was thinking maybe they tried this at radio just to see what happened and once Bluebird peaks for Miranda their duet Too Pretty for Prison will be released?

"Prison" could be a single, yes, but I don't think it really factored into the promotion for Girl. It's not like it would be beneficial for Maren to only be on radio as part of Miranda's song when she has her own album that's only a little over a year old to promote, and we're only on single #3 from it. My guess is that "To Hell & Back" was something Maren lobbied for as a single pick and the label went along with it for her, but it's obviously not panning out. She's at a point in her career where even if "Prison" is released, she could still have her own single out concurrently.

I agree, I think this was Maren's pick and honestly everyone probably thought anything they would release would do atleast OK (as all of her other singles have and her momentum is better than ever after 'The Bones') but this just didn't work. Radio clearly wants some tempo from her after two ballads.

Radio clearly wants some tempo from her after two ballads. Spot on. Maren loves this song. But it was absolutely not the right follow up -- thematically and tempo-wise it is very similar to "The Bones"... why would a station play something new from her that sounds fairly similar when it could just play "The Bones" and know people will want to listen? Your point about radio wanting something uptempo is only exasperated by the fact that radio knows there are other options. GIRL won CMA Album of the Year for crying out loud... everyone's listened to it. They know AMFP, The Feels, etc could be singles instead. One thing I will say is I'm worried about what this flop will mean to Maren herself. She recently made a tweet in response to "The Bones" outdoing Taylor Swift on the chart where she said something along the lines of how worried she was that having a baby would mean she couldn't promote a single properly and, therefore, it would flop. She was so excited to be proved wrong by "The Bones" success... and, here we are now. (To be fair, NOBODY can properly promote singles right now)

I understand that Maren wanted this song but sometimes artists need to let the label make decisions. If Maren wanted something sentimental, they could’ve chosen The Feels. It’s lovey-dovey while being upbeat. I’m not sure how the label allowed her to choose this considering this was the third, consecutive single in a row this era that were ballads/downtempo. I know, for one, I’m tired of the same tempo and before this was chosen, I was very excited about the prospect of finally having an upbeat single. So when this was announced, I was genuinely very surprised, and unfortunately, not surprised right now to see its lackluster performance.
But...The Bones was Maren’s very first bonafide smash and it was important for them to continue that momentum. They could’ve put out another guaranteed smash instead of just throwing out a random track expecting it to stick. Since The Bones was her first smash hit, there aren’t no guarantees still that Maren would churn out hits. It’s much harder for a female artist to stay in good graces with radio than it is for a male artist. And so, we are seeing they clearly made a mistake in this.
The only issue here is that they’re still working on this when they need to issue a new single immediately so she doesn’t lose her momentum. It would suck to see her go back to square one and have slow climbing singles all over again. Maren might get disappointed but this could serves as a reminder that nothing is guaranteed AND to choose singles wisely to continue the hot streak instead of playing favorites.
If anything, Maren can just pretend this was not a single, instead a song that was put out to please the fans during the pandemic.

It's such a shame that so much time has been wasted on a single that wasn't really going anywhere from the start. If this is the end of the road for it, it will probably go down as one of the biggest country flops of all time. There are only a handful of #1 singles that had their follow-ups miss the top 40 (Sara Evans' "Tonight" and Rodney Atkins' "Invisibly Shaken" both jump out to me, and they each reached #41). There have been a number of top 5/top 10 follow-ups from big name artists to flop, but it's pretty rare for a #1 follow-up to miss the top 40.
If they do switch gears, it will have to be for something uptempo. "All My Favorite People" and "The Feels" are the best options, I think, if they do opt to go with another single from Girl. I suppose they could also ride this out, and possibly push it into the top 30 over the rest of the year.

The band Heartland still takes the cake in this department. The follow-up single to their #1 hit barely even charted at all.

Literally the only thing that can explain this flopping is the use of "Hell" in the title, and that’s really upsetting. I don’t get why country radio is so terrified of that word.

I dont think this was a bad single, I mean the song is stellar. I think radio just gave it the cold shoulder cause they wanted all my favorite people. This flopping has nothing to do with this song being bad. Quality doesn't always win at radio and that's sad. To hell and back > the bones I said what I said.

I don't think the word 'hell' is as big of an inhibitor for country radio as its often made out to be. It may not "help" in this case, but I really think the song being so lowkey and downtempo, and not one of the popular songs on the record is contributing more to it whiffing right now. Radio didn't want this one, and comparing the sales response to this one (or lack thereof) with "The Bones" is pretty telling to me that the fans didn't either.

It’s a fine song, but as a radio single it’s a big nothingburger, as evidenced by the lack of sales and streams relative to her other singles or even many album tracks. Radio has no reason to play a song that’s not connecting when they can just keep playing The Bones instead.

Oh Lord. Come on, Columbia. Cut the loss. Abandon the ship while you still can, because this clearly just is NOT going to work, even with a year-long chart climb.

Despite this one absolutely crawling, it did set a new peak of #44 on BB this week. Not really much to celebrate, but at least it moved up a little bit.

I think if we had a little housecleaning on the BB chart this would be in the top 40. Morgan, Blake/Gwen, Chase, Langston, Kane’s WW Beautiful just to name a few they could send recurrent that aren’t really moving.

I wonder if Columbia is readying to pull this...a lyrics video to Just For Now was just uploaded on YouTube/Vevo. Not my ideal choice because it's yet another midtempo (when they really need to push an uptempo) but the melody sticks in your head immediately, and tbh I'm ready to move on from To Hell & Back.
Maybe they're waiting for a Top 40 peak on BB.
