P!nk, Kelly, and Katy Perry all do what Avril did, just better. We don't need another pop/rock girl; we already have 3 bonafide legends in the genre. I like some of Avril's music, but nothing she puts out holds a candle to the other three. I think she could have made a niche for herself if she had tried to stick out a bit more sonically, perhaps had she gone more the punk route, but I think "Girlfriend" actually did more harm than good to her career in the long run. It was literally just her trying to claim Kelly's sound for her own. So instead, she's stuck living in the shadow of Kelly and P!nk while the latter two continue to further diversify their sound and broaden their horizons.

I remember when Taylor first dove into actual pop (not country-pop crossovers but her real dive into it) with We are never getting back together and I knew you were trouble. At the time, those songs reminded me so much of Avril that it felt like Taylor was encroaching on Avrilβs sound and style and getting huge hits while Avril couldnβt. :( I do wonder whether, despite my belief they were similar, if Avrilβs sound had any influence at all on that era of Taylor.

Avril just really had mismanaged eras.
