lol @ Born In The USA being the most-streamed song on US Spotify on the 4th of July this year. No it's Chicken Fried (and they essentially remade the song and sent it to radio again) Shame that The Foundation (was the longest charting country album on Billboard 200) probably won't chart again because they released a Greatest Hits.

Billboard created the 52 week rule because songs were surpassing 52 weeks and clogging up the charts more often as the years went on, I wonder if they'll make a new rule and push the placement under #25 after Blinding Lights is gone. I could see it being a hard "52 weeks and you're done no matter where you're placing" rule. It would certainly make things easier since there's virtually no situation where a currently-charting song could reach a new peak after it's been charting for over a year (Blinding Lights notwithstanding). The only question is how it would affect the Christmas songs when those eventually hit 52 weeks - maybe Billboard could keep the current #25 threshold just for that (although I'd still prefer a separate holiday chart like there used to be). I can't see them changing the 52/25 rule simply because one song managed to avoid it. If this was a re-acurring thing then I'm sure they would roll something out but for now, one song out of the thousands that have charted since this rule rolled out has managed to dodge it. (Sort of, remember Christmas?)

In its 82nd week, Blinding Lights has (almost) more streams than the current #1. The list would be even more ridiculous with that rule.

The thing with Blinding Lights is that it still feels like it's going strong. It's still charting despite all the album releases. BL even charted higher than every song on the Lil Baby/Lil Durk album a few weeks ago. You never really got that feeling with Circles or I Hope. Those songs just felt like they were just holding on in their final weeks, and dropped off at the first event (Circles with Positions album and I Hope with Scary Hours 2). Even if we made a 15/52 recurrent rule, BL would have charted in 2 of the last 3 weeks.
That being said, I think the best way to deal with the increasing longevity problem is to modify the 25/52 rule to the 25/40 rule. (Making it 25/39 would have meant my ex's best friend falling off immediately after its peak week.) Under the 25/40 rule, songs like Mood and MEBF would have fallen off several weeks ago, instead of hanging on in the second quadrant of the Hot 100. Besides, there aren't many songs in the Top 25 more than 40 weeks into their run.

I wouldn't change any rules. "Blinding Lights" is the exception, not a common occurrence.

Top 5 biggest songs to not peak at #1 this year would probably be
1. Levitating 2. Kiss Me More 3. Astronaut In The Ocean 4. 34+35 5. Deja Vu

I just realized that Butter has totally collapsed on Apple Music. It's not even ranked there anymore, lol. I guess this might be the week that Good 4 u returns to #1 on the Hot 100, or maybe even Kiss Me More. Doesn't matter how much Butter collapses like the Soviet Union on streaming, those 200 BTS fans buying 90k copies of the song will keep it on top over real hits like good 4 u or the new Post Malone single. I guarantee that Butter will not get a 7th week at #1 on the 7/17 chart. It is not ranked on Apple Music, a platform that ranks over 1300 songs, for the 3rd day in a row. Plus, it will not have the physicals to fall back on, like with the 7/10 tracking week. Butter is going to lose a lot of points this week. This week is for the taking, and man do I wish Doja would have pushed back the album release one week... With the iTunes discount, that would have almost been a shoe-in #1. As it stands now, it's a very close race between Good 4 u and Kiss Me More.

As it stands now, it's a very close race between Good 4 u and Kiss Me More. you're talking like "Butter" was at any point performing well on Apple Music. the song didn't collapse on Apple Music between Thursday and Friday. as long as their deranged fanbase continues their campaign to mass download 57 copies each of the single, they don't really have a challenger this week on the Hot 100. the song is still gaining on radio, that should help with making up for the streams they lost on Apple Music. Doja's team kinda fumbled her release to be honest. where is the promo? why did they not book a spot at the BET Awards? regardless, "Kiss Me More" probably wouldn't take #1 this week either with the amount of points it managed last week. and pushing back an announced release is not a good move, and would clearly look like they have no confidence in Doja's project against Tyler, the Creator's (not the best way to promote the album).

That lil part alone sounds a LIL like "Dynamite". But, I will give it a fair trial.

BTS coming for BEPβs record! As I said in the other thread, there may be another Beatles 1964, MJ 1983, Usher 2004, or Drake 2018, but no one is ever going to dominate a year like the Black Eyed Peas with just 2 songs. The Peas record of 26 straight weeks at #1 is going to be safe forever.

Earliest goal is to be #1 until September the earliest to secure "Song of the Summer 2021 title" achievement for "their boys"

To put into perspective how hard it is to get 26 straight weeks at #1, not even Blinding Lights could do it on radio songs. (It got to 26 overall, but only 23 consecutive.) Itβs never going to happen with just one song. It may happen with two songs, as the BEP did. To break it, someone will need to follow up an Uptown Funk with a See You Again, and not have a Bad Blood interrupt in the middle. Good luck with that!

Or have a string of 3-5 singles ready to roll out and a flock of fans using money raised from an international fundraiser to buy literal dozens of copies of the same song week after week with no need for buy-in from anyone else via radio, streams or sales.

i really wanna see soemthing else go number 1 this week but i want to warn ya'll, the mass buying is going to be even worse this week.
if they get it this week, it would be 7 weeks at number 1 and ARMY go insane for the number 7. i am already seeing things on my timeline.
let's see how this shakes out.
I doubt they keep it after because people are gonna get confused about buying Butter or Permission To Dance.

Website sales just need to go the way of bundles. Itβs honestly the only way out of this, but will billboard listen?

If Billboard got rid of bundles last year, then maybe website sales will be eliminated from the formula. It's not impossible but it'll only happen if s**t really gets outta hand.

It's certainly possible if PTD is mass-bought so much that Post ultimately gets blocked from ever taking the #1 (even though most of his hits tend to take a month or so to really catch fire). Good 4 U getting screwed out of multiple weeks at #1 sucks, but I don't think Billboard has cared to fix the issue immediately since it did debut at #1. Motley Crew could change all that if it fails to go to the top for that reason.

Is the new BTS song all in English too? It was written by Ed Sheeran, so I'd imagine so Ed Sheeran also wrote Make It Right which was then in Korean but given that it's on the Butter single cd, I am thinking maybe English but i'd really love a Korean song.

This whole phenomenon is really fascinating to me. Is there an estimate on the number of people participating in mass-buying? Is this just 10k die-hards, or fewer?
