What's the record for the most weeks at #2 for a song that hit #1?

This isn't shade to "One Sweet Day" -- but damn, it was the definition of a #1 with "no strong competition" and that whole period just being insanely stagnant. The fact "Exhale" would've been a 12-week #1 if it didn't exist is mind boggling (it only reached #14 on the 1996 Year-End despite its whole chart run counting). Also, LL Cool J's "Hey Lover" spent the most weeks at #3 ever behind those two. That top 3 was the longest #1, longest #2, and longest #3 ever. The chart was just literally frozen with no competition for 3 months. I don't think any of those 3 songs were necessarily humongous once-in-a-decade smashes. They aren't anywhere close to those artists signature songs or considered some of the most iconic songs of the 90s either. Yeah they really weren't, and although Exhale's debut week at #1 actually missed the 1996 chart year, you'd still think spending a record 11 weeks at #2 and 20 total on the chart for that year would have landed it higher than #14. Many of those weeks at #2 could have been very distant from #1 in chart points, but like you said, OSD, when compared to other long-running #1s of its type, must not have been the strongest in points either, as it only sold a little over 2 million copies (when many other songs that decade sold 3-4 million+), and was only #7 on the year-end radio chart. "Many" other songs in the '90s sold 3-4 million copies? Can you give a list? All I can think of are "Candle in the Wind 1997" (11 million), "I Will Always Love You" (4 million), "Whoomp There It Is" (4 million), "Macarena" (4 million), "Gangsta's Paraside" (3 million), "How Do I Love" (3 million), "I'll Be Missing You" (3 million), and "Everything I Do." What am I leaving out? I think "One Sweet Day" is in the top 10 of the 1990s in terms of sales, but correct me if I'm wrong. It should also be noted that "OSD" had 6 weeks on Hot 100 Airplay in the previous chart year (a lot for the 1990s), including 2 weeks in the top 10. It was #2 on Hot 100 Airplay the first week of that 1996 chart year. So, it likely would have been higher in year-end airplay if all of its weeks were in the 1996 chart year. All of the songs above it on the year-end chart had their full runs counted.

Hold up, it took 10 people to write "Stay?" Is that due to a sample?

I'm not seeing any obvious samples. Both of the lead artists have a co-write credit as well as all of the song's producers, and a couple of people I don't know anything about.

August 15, 198101 02 Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie (1st of 9 weeks at #1)02 03 Theme From Greatest American Hero - Joey Scarbury I love this Top 2. I wish, though, that Theme From Greatest American Hero wasn't blocked. Believe it or not, I'm walking on air... I used to watch the TV show. Ok, now I’ve dated myself.

All of the songs above it on the year-end chart had their full runs counted. Yeah, I'm aware of those 6 weeks it charted on Hot 100 Airplay before, just didn't want to go into details that much to keep my post fairly short and concise. And yeah, as for all the songs that sold 3-4 million+, I think you got them all, we both seem to be well-learned in our 90s chart/sales history! That's 8 songs though, so I guess you could call that "many" (maybe somewhat debatable I guess), and even more specifically, I believe OSD's Soundscan total is roughly 2.3 million. I know at least one other, The Boy Is Mine, whose Soundscan total is around 2.6 million, and I'd imagine there's a couple others that sold in the 2.5-3.0 million range, which would put OSD's total maybe around 10th to 12th place for the decade. I just think that for a song that was the longest-running #1 of that decade and of all time up to 2017, and which also spent 13 weeks at no. 1 and a majority of its overall weeks on the airplay chart that year, those rankings seem much lower than many would otherwise expect, that's all.

Starting to look like Mood went recurrent. If it reached 52 weeks, they would have said so by now. Plus, one song that made the Top 50 that wasn't predicted to do so (means one less spot for songs like Mood and MEBF):

Notable dropouts: - "Wants And Needs" by Drake featuring Lil Baby (#2 peak, 21 weeks) - "Gone" by Dierks Bentley (#26 peak, 20 weeks) - "Settling Down" by Miranda Lambert (#41 peak, 20 weeks) - "Ski" by Young Thug & Gunna (#18 peak, 15 weeks) - "Minimum Wage" by Blake Shelton (#67 peak, 12 weeks) - "Wusyaname" by Tyler, The Creator featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again & Ty Dolla $ign (#14 peak, 5 weeks)
"Best Friend", "Mood", "My Ex's Best Friend", and "One Too Many" all avoid recurrency.
I expect "Build a Bitch" and maybe "Brutal" have dropped out as well.

There are still too many songs charting than are deserving. I fully expect the Hot 100 to be trimmed down to 50 or 75 songs by the end of the decade.

How does this make sense in your head enough that you can actually type it out, presumably re-read it again quickly before you post without feeling any sort of second-thought about it as you carry on planning out your next incorrect thought to post on here?

It wouldn't be a pulse weekly chart thread without some sort of inane take about how the charts should operate.

I mean to be fair, the Hot 100 Airplay chart never included 100 positions either, so there is some type of logical precedent he could be going by :)

I heard Mood on the radio this morning while I was driving to the Starbucks and I pondered its enduring success and the lack of an obvious follow-up.

Why stop at 50 or 75? Let's cut it down to just the top 1 and fuck the rest.
