Yeah, the problem isn't that streaming is down, it's that streaming new music is down. That won't be a problem for the older holiday songs.

Correct. Lady Gaga's The Fame is constantly getting best ever daily numbers on Spotify (which is why it's on BB200 atm without any proper "reason" behind it). People are just listening to old music more right now.

Current music is getting good streams we just don't have a song that is smashing. From the Billboard Bulletin, streams after week 8 (thanks to oldbloke from UKMix). Catolog music is older than 18 months. . | 2022 | 2021 | diff | Current | 50,100,348,000 | 52,847,479,000 | -5.20% | Catalog | 131,968,490,000 | 109,411,510,000 | 20.60% |
And 2022 is a bit weaker than 2021 in new big releases (2021 wasn't something special either).
A stat that showcases the lack of new big songs is that only 1 song for a single day has reached 5M streams on Global Spotify - Sacrifice when Dawn FM was released and that's it, every other day the most streamed song on the platform is bellow 5M (no 10M+ like in 2021).
But it doesn't matter because sooner or later a big artist will release, a TikTok song will go viral and streaming records will start to fall.

So I would think Nirvana should be allowed to chart even outside the top 50 as I doubt they've made 20 weeks with this song.

It’s got 2 days to do it. Come Saturday morning, Sweetest Pie is almost certainly going be the Spotify #1.

I'm not trying to put lofty expectations on Sweetest Pie but let's say Sweetest Pie is a long running number 1 and tops the YE, there's a few firsts that'll happen - Dua Lipa will join The Beatles, Elvis and George Michael as the only acts to top the YE more than once
- She will join Elvis as the only ones to do it in consecutive years
- She will be the first woman to top the YE multiple times
- It will be the first time an all female collab tops the YE
- Megan thee Stallion will become the first female rapper to top the YE
- First time since Old Town Road where the YE chart topper wasn't charting in January

Something in the Way up to #13 at Apple Music. I do hope it eventually manages to debut in the Hot 100.

So I would think Nirvana should be allowed to chart even outside the top 50 as I doubt they've made 20 weeks with this song. I don't think this is a rule change. Catalog songs are allowed to *re-enter* in the top 50, but what happens the next week follows standard rules. If a song has charted for less than 20 weeks and it stays the top 100 after re-entering in the top 50, then so be it. The thing is, most songs that re-enter in the top 50 are either already at their 20 week mark or they don't have enough juice the following week to remain in the top 100, so they drop out. If you have an example that counters this rationale, feel free to share it.

sorry if this has been posted about already. Pop on Top for 2021: State of the Billboard Hot 100, According to Hit Songs DeconstructedA look at key trends in the Hot 100's top 10 throughout 2021. www.billboard.com/pro/2021-hit-songs-deconstructed-hot-100-top-10-report/
• Pop over hip-hop: Pop was the most popular primary genre in the Hot 100’s top 10 in all of 2021, with a 39% share of all top 10 hits. Hip-hop ranked second, infusing 34% of all top 10s. Pop and hip-hop have traded top honors in the Hot 100’s top 10 in each of the past three years, after hip-hop won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018: 2021: Pop, 39% / Hip-hop, 34% 2020: Hip-hop, 41% / Pop, 40% 2019: Pop, 48% / Hip-hop, 34% 2018: Hip-hop, 59% / Pop, 24% (a relative landslide thanks in part to Drake’s dominance that year) 2017: Hip-hop, 32% / Pop, 31% • Pop No. 1 … at No. 1: Pop was even more prominent among No. 1 Hot 100 hits than overall top 10s in 2021, at 56% – thanks to weekly leaders from acts including BTS (three No. 1s) and Olivia Rodrigo (two) – and doubling hip-hop’s second-place 28% share. • R&B on the rise: R&B/soul has ranked as the third-most prominent primary genre in the Hot 100’s top 10 every year from 2017 through 2021. In 2021, however, R&B/soul logged a new high share among Hot 100 top 10s over that span, at 18%. That’s up after three straight years of decline, from 15% in 2017 to 11% in 2018, 10% in 2019 and 8% in 2020. • Major hits, minor keys: Songs in minor keys were the most prominent among Hot 100 top 10s in 2021, as they have been each year since 2017. • Retro, rock roar: “Looking outside the hip-hop genre, the 1980s skyrocketed” as an influence among Hot 100 top 10s,” in 2021, Hit Songs Deconstructed highlights. Sonically, the ’80s impacted no Hot 100 top 10s in both 2018 and 2019, inched to 8% for 2020 and soared to 31% in 2021. Rock has also bounded as a notable influence among Hot 100 top 10s, up from no presence in 2017 to shares of 25% in 2018 and 2019, 38% in 2020 and 46% in 2021, helped by such as hits as Rodrigo’s No. 1 “Good 4 U.”

^Yeah I'm betting they're going to probably do a big push for the album (with a deluxe) the week the boxsets, cassettes, and vinyls drop. I feel like they're are not gonna let that opportunity slip unless a big drop is confirmed to arrive at that week. I also suspect around that time we'll probably get a music video for "Out of Time" as (at least according to the callouts) "Sacrifice" is pretty much done and the tour is going to commence soon.

Rock has also bounded as a notable influence among Hot 100 top 10s, up from no presence in 2017 to shares of 25% in 2018 and 2019, 38% in 2020 and 46% in 2021, helped by such as hits as Rodrigo’s No. 1 “Good 4 U.” This seems hard to believe. 46% of top 10 hits in 2021? If they're choosing to be very liberal with what they classify as rock-influenced, then maybe, but then it also wouldn't be 0% in 2017. If they're choosing to be very strict with what they classify as rock-influenced then 0% makes sense for 2017 but 46% doesn't make sense for 2021.

You might be right, I can't think of any examples, except maybe some Christmas songs because some of them were (or still are) less than 20 weeks but most years they would drop completely out anyway rather than into the bottom 50 but I think that would probably be the best way to determine if there's been a rule change. I did think of My Boo from a few years ago if anyone remembers that but that was a hit from the first time around so it probably had 20 weeks already. Same with Dreams I guess.

If there was a rule change, it either came into effect this calendar year or it has an exception for holiday songs, because in the tracking week that started December 24, several holiday songs got sent to recurrency that would be in the Hot 100's point range like "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" (4 weeks, BU03), Jackson 5's "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" (2 weeks, BU04), "Mistletoe" (12 weeks, BU05), and "Wonderful Christmastime" (6 weeks, BU06).

Two possibilities.
It is being allowed another twenty week run because it met some criteria we don’t know about or is charting for some other criteria we don’t know about
Or
This is A one week error that will be corrected next week

I noticed the same thing happening in Canada, but looking closer, it just leaves me even more confused: 7 songs debut, 5 survive in the top 50 in week 2, while "Family Affair" goes to #91 and "California Love" drops out (it was the lowest of the 7, so if the second-lowest is there, it's probably below the top 100), but then in week 3 2 survive in the top 50, "In da Club" goes to #53, and both "The Next Episode" and "Without Me" drop out (the latter especially has been relatively stable in streaming, only moving 46-49 in the first two weeks, so it's like it went recurrent?). Since the Canada chart is newer than the US, all of these songs were debuts on Super Bowl week.

At least the ARIA chart is still straightforward and has no bullcrap rules. That’s why I value that chart over the UK, US, and Canada charts.
