At any other point in time I'd be annoyed that Imagine Dragons are in the top 10 rn but I can't be mad because it means a song entered the top 10 this week

It's surprising that despite how tired we are of ID, this is only their 5th top ten hit!! Although obviously their previous 4 were gargantuan and they've had pretty big non-top tens as well. The fact they've been around for over ten years now probably also has something to do with it, and they get almost as much hate as Maroon 5 despite the latter having far more hits.

Agreed, although Thunder has grown on me slightly over the years, it’s a decent song dragged down to mediocrity by the pitch-shifted first half of the chorus.

Yeah, that’s how I feel. I also didn’t realize people were tired of them due to overexposure. To me they kind of feel like they were kinda there, had some big hits, and now just live in the background releasing music every once in a while. And yes, Thunder is absolutely cringe embarrassing. They should be cancelled for that song alone. It’s next level, while everything else they’ve done, you either like it or you don’t, but you survive.

I completely agree with you but also, SYT became a hit 1 year after “Blinding Lights” did. There were other singles released in between that didn’t do as well. Now we are 1 year after SYT and in the same predicament again. “Out of Time” can certainly be his next single that gets played on the radio for the next year or so. I’d argue it has an even wider multi-format appeal than BL/SYT had. There’s potential R&B crossover so I can see this being a long winded hit if they play the cards right.

If the Barbz decide to do a sales campaign for the remix...15k sales would probably get her top 5, 40k would be the target for #1.
She's also got the album that week, which could give an additional boost.

I'm sure others have made this connection before but I was just thinking about the staleness of the charts and the strength of older music, and realized we are experiencing that in movies and TV too -- basically, we just keep revisiting the same characters with movies like Batman and Spiderman, while we've had reboot after reboot of old TV shows. Is "Carolina" a reference to the state since the author of the book in which the movie is based from North Carolina? If so, I am interested to see what Swift and Dessner have to say since they aren't from the Carolinas...

Considering the book takes place in North Carolina and Taylor said she read the book years ago, I'm actually curious if the song is based on the book and that explains the song length

Yeah, I can imagine an 8-minute artsy folk pop song (just assuming it's folky since Aaron Desner is back) for a movie based on a crime novel isn't going to be a massive smash hit song but who knows? Taylor has been doing what she wants for the past two years and she's been massively successful
