Grammy's desperate for viewer numbers flash BTS on their feed. Pfft....I will boycott the Grammys. It's a corrupt trash award system...BTS should have won last year for sure. I hope Grammy ratings tank to lowest numbers EVER.
…so they kept the camera on taylor the whole night just to snub her in what is considered one of the best songs written of all time? taylor swift’s magnum opus? the grammys remain corrupt. you owe me, taylor swift, swifties and the rest of the industry transparency…

I can see why people are upset that Beyonce didn't win AOTY, especially given her past nominations in the category. However, given that she's won 32 Grammy Awards-regardless of category- I can't say her work has gone unappreciated. Artists such as Madonna, Michael, Whitney, and Mariah have all won far less than her, and she has almost as many as them combined. I also have a feeling she'll eventually win it.

Today's Grammy awards happened as usual but something unusual happened, it's happened before to the same artist and this is why it's unusual. BTS have been non-stop charting on Billboard Artist 100 chart since 2016, they mysteriously were snubbed of a nomination when they were at #33 the week before they were out, despite their album charting stable on BB200 and them being amongst the top 5 most streamed artists daily on Spotify. They returned the following week at #59 with no explanation from Billboard whatsoever. Today the same thing happened again, BTS were at #47 last week and they mysteriously got robbed from a nomination this year, AGAIN. with no explanation from Billboard. Their album "Proof" is STILL charting on BB200 and they're stable amongst Spotify's Daily Top 10 Most Streamed Artists chart. We need an explanation this time on why this keeps on happening only to BTS.

AOTY (and to a lesser extent SOTY) drama aside. The night had a ton of great moments.
The Hip-Hop 50th Performance may be one of the greatest Grammy performances ever. The energy it brought to the show was amazing.
The LGBTQ+ representation throughout the night was stunning to see!
And Beyonce making history with the most wins is such a huge accomplishment. I think regardless of her winning an AOTY one day, I would be happy to see her keep amassing a huge collection of wins that would be next to impossible to topple.
Bonnie and Lizzo's wins were a more than a little unexpected by me and I was so happy for them both! Plus their reactions were so genuine!
Also I'm happy for Harry, not my cup of tea but I figured it had a good chance too.
Overall a really great night!
Next years race for AOTY is already interesting too, could Taylor be the first to win 4?

So for the record this ended up indicating not a damn thing except perhaps a general bias against music by committee (the five went 1 for 20): ROTY - Not one of the 5 said they voted for Lizzo. One said they like her, but that's it. AOTY - Only 1 of the 5 said they voted for Harry, and even that person said they didn't listen to the album a lot. SOTY - Not one of the 5 said they voted for Raitt. One said it would be fun if she won but that no one sees it as the best song. New Artist - Not one of the 5 said they voted for Joy. One said they'd heard of her, but that's it. It's interesting ratings went up since people kept talking about the lack of hype and big names. As much coverage as there has been about Beyonce losing AOTY again, I wish there was at least half as much attention on Kendrick Lamar losing AOTY for a fourth time. I know his latest wasn't as big as his first 3, but it's still sad to see him lose AOTY for a fourth time. could Taylor be the first to win 4? The possibility of Swift breaking her tie with Stevie Wonder while at the same time beating out SZA is honestly more than I can handle right now.

What a disappointing award show as the Grammys continue to play it safe again with that Harry Styles AOTY win. Same as what happened a few years back when Melodrama lost to Bruno Mars. A Best New Artist winner that nobody has ever heard of yet again, signs of Shelby Lynne & Esperanza Spalding again. Taylor Swift only got one award for her best music video and Christina Aguilera got snubbed for Best Latin Pop Album in the pre-telecast awards. To be fair, there was no possibility of a Best New Artist this year that everyone would have known. Måneskin,Latto & Anita are somewhat known as all of them have been on major talk shows and award shows. The Grammys have shown to make mistakes and this best new artist winner will be forgotten like Shelby Lynne.

Also, what's with the idea that a best new artist needs to be "remembered"? It's not a predictions award.

Plus jazz artists often have LONG careers... Dianne Reeves, for example, is playing two shows at Lincoln Center this weekend.

I swear I see more people in here now whining about the whining of Beyoncé losing AOTY (and completely not grasping why it's a big deal) than actual people whining about Beyoncé losing AOTY. Y'all really are doing the most it's hilarious. Anyway, speaking of Beyoncé, I have stumbled across the real reason she was late to the ceremony. Stuck in traffic my ass!

in case you needed another proof of the mess this year's show was, for BREAK MY SOUL's Song of the Year nomination, they somehow left in additional names in the lower-third, presumably from last year's show. Amala (Doja Cat), Lukasz (Dr. Luke) and Solana (SZA) did not co-write BREAK MY SOUL. neither did Carter Lang, Gerard A Powell and David Sprecher.
you know what they DID write together? "Kiss Me More." :dead:

Regardless of who someone thinks should’ve won AOTY, it’s inappropriate and rude af to take away that moment from the artist who won. Harry didn’t choose to win, the Academy chose him. And it is extremely toxic how Beyonce fans at the Grammys heckled him during his acceptance speech. Oh my God, this, a million times! It's so baffling and disappointing to see all of these artists get hate trains for just winning. Most of them create work and then submit it for consideration. It's not their fault someone thought they were worthy of recognition. It was the same with Gayle getting into Song of the Year for me. Why hate her for someone else's positive opinion of her song? People clearly want someone famous and/or successful to be angry with.

Had a lot of thoughts (mostly responses to Au$tin), thought I hit send, but had a pretty bad scooter accident and turned my laptop off mid-post. Anyway, irrelevant now. Congrats to all the winners. A little salty about Omar losing BNA and Wet Legs beating legends like YYYs and Björk in the Alt category, but...you get what you get and you don't get upset! Have a blessed day!

Not sure why the wins for Esperanza Spalding and Samara Joy were questioned in any way; both are great talents, and Spalding has continued to do well including winning another Grammy a few years ago. Jazz isn't something that makes people a household name in 2023, but those artists are still creative and talented and worthy of awards.
Meanwhile, it's cool to see Lizzo say she works to improve her talent:

@ all my quotes being from Austin. Edit: Well, not quite, LOL. Also, yay that I was able to recover my post (Thanks Microsoft Edge!) The Grammys were pretty chaotic, especially the pre-show (props to all the cursing that made it past the censors, but I guess because it wasn't televised, it didn't matter!) Once again, it seemed they wanted to spread things to prevent a sweep, which is...fine, I guess. Other than the BNA and Alt categories, I am happy for all the winners. Also, props to Beyonce for making history! But, also, stop with the narrative that Beyonce's album is not a dance/electronic album because that's exactly what it is. Also, I strongly believe that Beyonce's unwillingness to "play the game" is what cost her AOTY. She really thought she could just drop an album with no videos, no live performances anywhere (even when performing live, LOL), no press to speak of, and rely on...her name? This is the GRAMMYs. Was the album one of the best of the year? Sure. Motomami was infinitely better and had to settle for a genre award. Also, the best part about music is its complete subjectivity, so while people are arguing over which was the "better" album of the AOTY, everyone is going to have their own personal feelings about it. I usually base my feelings on overall listenability. Maybe the Grammy voters went that way instead of what was more "daring," "bold," "brave," whatever other adjectives used to describe a lighthearted party album. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Ugh, I could listen to Kacey sing a phone book. Kacey literally sounds like she is singing the phone book on all her performances, live and recorded. At least she was on key, though! Must we see DJ Khaled perform? ð« I didn't, LOL. I watched the pre-show live at my friend's brewery while getting drunk and so, I watched the main event on a lag. Fell asleep before the Big 4, re-wound (thanks, YouTube TV!), and then shut it off after AOTY. How rude to compare Pepa to a cartoon pig! I get that she is thick, but...damn. "People like me don't win this very often." -Harry Styles oh Yeah...I REALLY hope he clarifies what he meant by that weird comment. Does he mean White men? LMFAO. Oh...I read that people are saying it's because he was from a talent show and a boybander. OK, Harry. Girl your last like five posts are policing and criticizing what others are posting in this thread so I'm not sure I'd be waving the "doing the most" flag. Love you, bae and fwiw, Magnus was not involved in this accident, but I am drunk in my office after a wine event and everyone was like (when I was wearing a mask to cover my "horrific" injuries, LOL #vanity) "WHY ARE YOU STILL STANDING?!" Anyway, finally finished posting my thoughts and thank you for your concern, you are a doll.

I usually base my feelings on overall listenability. Maybe the Grammy voters went that way instead of what was more "daring," "bold," "brave," whatever other adjectives used to describe a lighthearted party album. I like this point, and I think there is the potential for a really good but also tricky discussion here. "Subjectivity" is obviously a thing, and as we saw from those 5 Grammy voters who spoke to Variety, voters are humans and vote for things for personal reasons in the same way we all do here. For me what's interesting/tricky about it is what informs subjectivity. It makes sense to me that people who earn a living playing instruments, for example, will subjectively respond more positively to music that is instrument-based than beat-based music. Having said that, identity politics also affect subjectivity, and taste more often than not affects what wins. From what I've seen, that then more often that not affects nonwhites in a negative way. That's of course why there is a move with the Grammys, Oscars, etc to widen the scope of who is invited into the voting bodies, but the root of the issue is the subjective nature of these bodies and what informs that subjectivity. IMO anyway. It certainly is, and to me this might relate to what I wrote above because we know the subjective "Disco sucks" movement was very racist, and people saying Renaissance isn't dance makes me think of that discourse. From my understanding the entire point of Renaissance was to highlight the roots and evolution of dance music, which is also why the collaboration and sampling aspect was so integral to the project as I referenced in another post in this thread. Objectively that was the vision that Beyonce as curator was brought to life, which is separate from whether someone wants to listen to it.

an important detail that is very relevant in understanding how the general field awards went to who they went to this year.
hiphop / rap being under 10% when it has been the #1 or #2 genre in music consumption for years... 🥴 adds another dimension to the whiteness and adult-contemporary leaning choices of the Academy.

I saw a twitter thread earlier today about Beyoncé's win in the Dance album category being unfair because even if the album is primarily a dance album, she's essentially a guest to the genre and still a pop artist so her album should have been moved over to the pop category instead. So what that means to me is that an artist must remain in the field in which they are primarily known for, which comes with its own set of problems and limitations. It sucks that the lesser-known names predictably lost to a bigger name, but Beyonce also didn't win all of the genre categories she was listed in (ie, the R&B category) so it's not exactly a shoo-in either.

I'd be curious to know how people linked to each genre vote and how strong the overlap is between people's base genre and the genre of the music they end up voting for. It does suck that because of the law of averages and the idea of nominees canceling each other out that the winner(s) will almost always be something middle-of-the-road and less likely to be a statement piece or anything that ventures too far from the long-accepted norm of whatever state music has been in. As good as Harry's album might be, it's not particularly adventurous and it's not something that gets people feeling emotional over it the way Beyonce's did. So the people who loved Renaissance really felt something over it, while Harry's likely got a "this is decent" response. It's also not great from the perspective of wanting music to evolve and grow. If the Grammys were truly influential, the state of music would be pretty stagnant on that basis. I assume the voting system for the big 4 categories is a one vote per person, and I wonder what the result might look like if there was a top 3 or top 5 rank per voter.

Good points, and idea about a ranked vote. I'd also be interested to know what % of people who make music make hip-hop music. While on the one hand it sounds bad that less than 10% of voters represent hip-hop, I have no idea what % of music makers make hip-hop. I mean that literally; I have no idea. 10% of voters could be well underrepresented, or not. Also, it probably doesn't help that people like Drake have opted out of the Grammys at certain points. I get it, but opting out (and perhaps influencing others to do the same) means the representation is going to decrease. Seeing that jazz has such a higher percentage of voters tells me jazz musicians make a real point of voting (and maybe there are a lot more people making jazz music than I realize). I'm also surprised to see country is in the same boat as hip-hop in terms of that list, but American Roots is on there which is country-adjacent and probably has a lot of the same people voting as country does.

I think some genres and areas in the industry place a higher emphasis on the Grammys than others. The jazz categories, for example, and some of the orchestral/classical/big band categories probably carry a LOT more weight among their peers than other genres.
