I have absolutely no idea how it will do, but the Sam Smith/Madonna song "Vulgar" feels more like a followup to "Unholy" than anything on his album. But Sam's success/failures with songs lately have been utterly unpredictable to me. This could miss the Hot 100 entirely or go top ten and I wouldn't be surprised either way.

If all Sam's singles this entire decade except for 1 have flopped it's not really unpredictable on what to expect from a new Sam single. Just as Jason Derulo having 1 comeback #1 hit in 2020 but aside from that, essentially every other single he's released the last 5 years has flopped therefore you know more than likely what to expect from a new Jason Derulo single at this point.

Sure that song may somehow go viral, but we can play that what-if with any song on Earth lol.

Unpredictable is someone like The Weeknd, who has consistently a share of smash hits and flops throughout this decade. Who can flop with a new single, then somehow get a 10 year old song to smash. Who can follow-up the biggest Hot 100 hit ever (Blinding Lights) with a relative dud (In Your Eyes), then snap right back with another humongous smash (Save Your Tears).

Maluma is only 29. We all thought Miley Cyrus was passed her peak a few years ago. Maluma's highest peaking single was Hawai three years ago. Peaked at #12. I would just like to see one more top 40 hit from him.

Ok, I follow what you're saying.

So, Sam's had Unholy at #1 and then 5 other singles since 2020 which peaked anywhere from 36 to 73. I guess then we'd expect "Vulgar" to fall in that range.

But, for me the thing that's unpredictable is that Unholy was also completely different sound/subject-wise from all his other singles, and was a duet with a female gay icon. Vulgar is a similar situation, so does some of the Unholy "magic" rub off on it? Or no? It could go any direction as far as I can tell. I've seen a lot of gay friends surprisingly impressed by it today tho. But, it'd have to reach beyond the gays.

So, Sam's had Unholy at #1 and then 5 other singles since 2020 which peaked anywhere from 36 to 73. I guess then we'd expect "Vulgar" to fall in that range.

But, for me the thing that's unpredictable is that Unholy was also completely different sound/subject-wise from all his other singles, and was a duet with a female gay icon. Vulgar is a similar situation, so does some of the Unholy "magic" rub off on it? Or no? It could go any direction as far as I can tell. I've seen a lot of gay friends surprisingly impressed by it today tho. But, it'd have to reach beyond the gays.

Aside from "Unholy", Sam hasn't even had a top 70 since 2020. It's a dire situation for them.

That song was truly an isolated instance in all senses. The parent album did very badly, all the follow-ups have did nothing, and Kim also really didn't get any career elevation from it either. 

Unholy smashed on Spotify/Apple out of the gate and was #1 on both by second day. As of this afternoon "Vulgar" still isn't even top 200 on Apple Music's Pop genre chart, which places out most likely outside the top 1,000 overall. It would be very lucky if this song even debuts on Hot 100.

End of June. Travis, Olivia and Lil Uzi (maybe Drake too) all decided to drop later in the month and not now which honestly would be completely easy sweeps for them. Now they’re all going to compete with each other which is even more chaotic.

I just played the explicit and clean versions of "Vulgar" on U.S. Apple Music, so there's a couple of plays there.

We'll see if it does any better on Spotify.
