"And the obese milking welfare Well God, if you're 5 foot 3 and you're 300 pounds Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds"
Ohhhh fuck this, there's tonnes of artists making way more potent and interesting critiques of capitalism than this (especially in rap!) that don't use the same harmful trope of "evil people use YOUR tax money and STEAL money from the less fortunate to be lazy on welfare!" and also fatphobia in general, let's hope it doesn't last more than a day

Hey guys just stepping in to say a certain user will be dealt with so don't feel the need to reply to their "interesting" commentary in the thread, just ignore that particular user for the time being and thanks! I see... You're a moderator as well as a Taylor Swift fan, like your website clearly shows. "Interesting" combo indeed. I wonder if you put your foot down in the same way when someone criticizes an artist that you don't like. As a moderator, you should be neutral, shouldn't you?

I know BS has been on the cusp of re-entering for a few weeks, but... The irony that BS OG + Style OG may re-enter the H100 because TS is trying to devalue the OGs with the release of '1989 TV' is a mindbending. It's really exciting to see BS and BS TV charting in the future at the same time. And I'm hoping that BS TV will be the carrier of the album and will reach number 1. Insannne. Only TS my Gawddd!

The way Taylor gets under people's skin is reaaaaally something lmfao I think it's natural for anyone who is not a big fan of someone to get annoyed if they have to constantly hear songs by that artist, hear about that artist, see them take over the charts, come across them in media, etc. Taylor is obviously having a level of coverage and success most of us haven't seen in our lifetime. For people who love her that is of course going to be great, but for people who don't love her it's of course going to be obnoxious because they want a break from her and/or want to see other artists get some of that radio time/press coverage/whatever. More so I'm just saying anyone with this level of success is going to get some negative reaction. The Beatles had detractors, Michael Jackson had detractors, etc. Mariah gets it during each holiday season.

I've seen the latest forecast and we won't see a certain poster in a week, so it's not necessary to reply to them. Also, I see that the thread is going back to topic, so I expect this to hopefully happen in the following days.

Currently not on streaming yet, but this song is currently outselling one of BTS member's solo song on iTunes. (Edit: It went to #1 at 11am EST) lip predictions just posted that they think it’s now a contender for number 1 next week and that it will clear 50K sales today alone ! Wowza Lol... well it is a good song.

I'm quite agnostic to Taylor Swift, but I would suggest to her fans that saying she's as big as Michael Jackson or The Beatles will get severe backlash a lot of the time. On Pulse you might get just one person, but try saying this on the Daily Mail comments section, you'll get 500 dislikes and loads of ridicule. Enjoy her success, stay humble, and her success is speaking for itself. I say this from personal experience. One of the reasons I dislike Lady Gaga is just because, after 2 singles and her being famous for like 4 months, people were saying she's revolutionised pop music, that she's the biggest artist in the past 35 years, that she's destined to be the new Madonna. It was so over-the-top to me and I felt it was unfair. So, strategically speaking my advice to Taylor fans is to avoid comparisons in success to past icons or else it might cause people to dislike her. And I'm rooting for Cruel Summer to be #1 this week because it'd be iconic. Although I love the guitar song from the first page, it's amazing. And I wouldnt mind Fast Car either. Last Night is a song I like but it's had it's time now, I hope something else can get the title.

bad idea right was designed to cater to me and me alone. it’s so messy in the best possible way and i hope it has a massive chart run
also if Taylor can get so many detractors, combined with how sold out her shows have been, the claim that she’s as big as The Beatles/MJ has to have at least a little merit, right? at the very least she’s reached the closest anybody has gotten to that claim in the age of the internet

On Pulse you might get just one person, but try saying this on the Daily Mail comments section, you'll get 500 dislikes and loads of ridicule. Enjoy her success, stay humble, and her success is speaking for itself. That's because fans of music and artists who have cemented themselves into music history hate the idea that an artist who emerged this side of 1980 could possibly have any sort of impact on the same level. These people refuse to admit that a newer* artist could possibly achieve things to such a degree because that would mean admitting that someone from a younger generation than a boomer (or a woman, or a Black artist, or whoever) could be considered on such an impossible level of greatness. It goes against everything we're all used to and that makes people uncomfortable. When I've seen recent claims that Taylor's current popularity is on levels not seen since Thriller-era Michael Jackson, I don't doubt it. Everything I've ever seen and read about Thriller paints it to be a massive point in music history and pop culture in general. While I didn't start following music and pop culture until the mid-90s, nothing that I can remember matches the level of Taylor now. Of course, it's all perception and it's impossible to compare two different points in time, but it's a reasonable claim to make and it's silly how defensive people get when they see it. I'm kinda dissapointed with the new Olivia song. Unlike Good 4 U which sounded clean and well-structured, this new song sounds messy and kind of all over the place. Hope it grows on me, and that Olivia can mantain her chart-success though. I agree. Sonically it does not sound appealing. I like to listen to fun punk rock records. But this sounds like a mess.

Taylor’s been huge for far more than two singles and four months, so if you can’t see how it’s different then idk what to tell you. Also, you’re basically saying you didn’t like Gaga because everyone else loved her, which really isn’t a rational reason.

The race for the Top 3 is even more interesting because all 3 songs were driven by popular demand rather than what the label chose to promote.
1. Last Night - was sent to Pop, but label was pushing 'One Thing at a Time' to Country radio. However, Country radio jumped on LN and quickly chose it as the winner. OTAT only peaked at #8 on Country.
2. Fast Car - 'Love You Anyway' was the lead single, but when 'Gettin' Old' was released, FC was the clear winner with streaming and sales. LYA ascent slowed down, but now that FC peaked at Country, is aiming for the summit.
3. Cruel Summer - everyone knows.

NAHHH style TV deserves to be the 'single', not BS or a vault track. what happened to the promo cycle of Style was literally BS. first it got a crappy MV(feels low budgeted even) which hampered its streams (and youtube was the main source of consumption back then, especially with the album itself already released, nobody will buy the single anymore), despite that it still probably wouldve gone #1 cus taylor was gonna do heavy promo for it (rumored to be the song performed at the grammys instead of OOTW) . but then her mom got sick so all the plans were cancelled.. anyhow, with Style literally outstreaming BS right now, we can see which song is the superior one. do Style better be the anointed one come october. (also, imo there should be a Style - Shortened Version where the middle part is cut out so the song is 2:45 long. the middle part is just a repeat of the first anyway, so it's kinda unnecessary; and makes the song duller when you replay it a couple of times. by making it 2:40 long know i could replay it 20 times before feeling tired. plus, this is about how long the attention span a zoomer have anyway.)

OTAT is actually an amazing song imo; where as LN is clearly designed to be the bro-country version of the soulless fast food mega hits like JB's stay or Sunflower and others. i guess people really prefer short songs nowadays

"bad idea right?" is lower than "vampire" was on AM (#17 vs. #20) by the same update, and "vampire" had its clean/explicit versions split, so it wasn't combined. It was also fighting Uzi's album bomb. The music video is also doing much fewer views.
I don't think it's a #1 challenger.

I don't think it's a #1 challenger either, but a top 5 position would be really nice...and I'm not writing her off yet, really want to see the Spotify numbers first. At least Last Night (plus CS and FC) is much weaker this time, about 60 points less.

The Virginia resident is resonating with music listeners, thanks to his song raging against greed and injustice.
Virginia country singer Oliver Anthony, a former factory worker, is going viral thanks to his song “Rich Men North of Richmond,” a scathing tale of greed and injustice that is rapidly being embraced and promoted by right-wing pundits.
“I’ve been selling my soul, working all day/ Overtime hours for bullsh– pay,” he sings in the song’s opening lines. A video, posted by radiowv, shows Anthony offering an acoustic performance, funneling the pain, frustration and angst of the working class into lines that rage against greedy rich men. The song takes on high taxes, abuse of welfare, and selfish politicians, with lyrics that have resonated mightily with music listeners. Elsewhere, he sings, “Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothing to eat and the obese milking welfare/ Well God, if you’re 5-foot-3 and you’re 300 pounds/ Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds.”
In a YouTube video posted Aug. 7, Anthony shared that the performance video of “Rich Men North of Richmond” was his “first song to get out there that has been recorded on a real microphone and a real camera, and not just on my cell phone.” He also noted that he began writing his own music in earnest in 2021.
“Things were not good for a lot of people and in some respects I was one of those people,” Anthony said. “I had wasted a lot of nights getting high and getting drunk and I had sort of gotten to a point in my life where even things that I did care about didn’t mean anything to me anymore. This is certainly no Dr. Phil episode, but I found an outlet in this music. I started uploading a couple of songs.”
He uploaded “Ain’t Gotta Dollar” last year and notes he’s since put out approximately a dozen songs he recorded on his cell phone, including “90 Some Chevy” and “Living in the New World.”
Of “Rich Men North of Richmond,” he said it centers on the problems of the working class, noting, “The universal thing I see is no matter how much effort they put into whatever it is they’re doing, they can’t quite get ahead because the dollar’s not worth enough, they are being over-taxed. … I want to be a voice for those people. And not just them, but humans in general.” He went on to add, “As long as you’re above the dirt, you’ve got a fightin’ chance.”
Anthony’s grizzly, acoustic sound and straightforward songwriting style is already drawing stylistic comparisons to artists including Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers.
Here, five things to know about Anthony and “Rich Men North of Richmond”:
1. A Performance Video That's Become a Sensation
A performance video of “Rich Men North of Richmond,” posted by radiowv, has surpassed 2 million views, just two days after its release on YouTube. “Rich Men From North Richmond” has also surged to No. 1 on the iTunes Country chart, outpacing the former chart leader, Jason Aldean’s controversial track “Try That in a Small Town.”
2. He Has Plans to Start a Farm
Anthony lives in Farmville, Virginia, just over an hour outside of Richmond. According to the YouTube channel radiowv, Oliver lives on a piece of land with his three dogs and has plans to turn the property of land into a small farm with livestock. He also counts Hank Williams Jr. as an inspiration.
3. There's More Where That Came From
Though “Rich Men” is at the pinnacle of the iTunes chart, it’s not the only song from Oliver that is gaining traction. His previously released songs including “Ain’t Gotta Dollar,” “I’ve Got to Get Sober” and “I Want to Go Home” are also on the iTunes Country chart.
Anthony also hinted that there is a full project on the way, saying, “There’ll be a lot of positive songs, too, and there already are some — ”90-Some Chevy,’ ‘Ain’t Gotta Dollar’ and ‘Between You and Me’ — there’ll be more songs like that.”
4. He Says He's "Dead Center" Politically
In a video, Anthony discussed his now-viral song, saying, “It touches base on human trafficking and the atrocities that… I’ll say this, I sit pretty dead center down the aisle on politics and always have. I remember as a kid the conservatives wanting war and me not understanding that, and I remember a lot of the controversies when the left took office, and it seems like both sides serve the same master and that master is not someone of any good to the people of this country.
“But I think one of the worst things a human can do is take advantage of a child. I can’t begin to conceptualize what has to happen to someone in order for them to think that’s okay. I think I drew the line on being quiet when I started to see that becoming normalized and I’ll leave that at that.
“The last part of the song, it touches on suicide rates and really on mental health and depression. There’s no reason why young men and women in this country should be committing suicide. There’s obviously a problem. People talk about epidemics in this country — homelessness and drug use, lack of skilled labor and the suicide rates. Those aren’t problems, those are symptoms of a bigger, universal problem. … It’s common sense, but we don’t talk about it enough.”
5. A John Rich Connection? One social media user, entrepreneur Jason Howerton, claimed to have spoken with Oliver, and noted that country music singer-songwriter and outspoken conservative John Rich has offered to produce Oliver’s album. Billboard has confirmed that Rich has made the offer to produce the album.
The video is also gaining traction through various media personalities, including Rich, Joe Rogan and Matt Walsh, as well as Barstool Sports and conservative outlet Breitbart posting it on social media.

Those aren’t problems, those are symptoms of a bigger, universal problem. … It’s common sense, but we don’t talk about it enough.” 5.
The video is also gaining traction through various media personalities, including Rich, Joe Rogan and Matt Walsh, as well as Barstool Sports and conservative outlet Breitbart posting it on social media.
this and a couple of k pop songs have pushed Aldean down to #4 on itunes.

First off, that Oliver Anthony may claim to be "dead center politically," but based on the company he keeps he's not.
Now what I came to post about.
First weeks like this make me really, really wish Billboard hadn't done away with the recurrent chart this year. It would be fasciniating to see where the "1989" tracks rank.
And as someone who's been following charts longer than some of you have been alive, what Taylor has done is really extraordinary. First, there is a very, very good chance that next week she will have songs on the Hot 100 from FOUR separate albums. Secondly I think it's fair to say that the level of success she's achieving this year is of a level few have ever approached. But the truly extraordinary thing is that she's done so 17 YEARS into her career. Just for comparison, that would be like if Madonna's peak era was "Music," or if Elvis peaked in 1973, or Elton John in 1987, or Prince in 1996, or if the Beatles stayed together and were bigger in 1981 than they were in 1964. About the only ones who came close at that level of superstardom are Michael Jackson, whose peak was 14-15 years after his (truly amazing) debut in 1969, and maybe Springsteen, whose peak was 11-13 years after his first recordings (although only 9-10 years after his breakthrough). The Rolling Stones had a big 1981, but I don't think it was as big as their height of the mid-60s. And there have been big acts who had big eras, even their biggest, years, sometimes decades, after their breakthrough - Santana, Aerosmith, Cher, Aretha - but all of those were comebacks after chart slumps. Taylor's never really had a chart slump - even "Reputation" and "Lover" had their share of hits (and "Lover" of course is having its biggest hit RIGHT NOW). I can't think of anyone who has had sustained popularity for almost two decades and peaks this far into their career, both on the charts and on tour. It's truly extraordinary.

"Bad idea right" may not debut at #1 in the Hot 100 but I sure want it to have more staying power than Vampire. We are saying this as if Vampire ain't been in the top 10 this entire time and is still comfortably sitting there since release like... No, what I meant to say is that I want it to be more popular than Vampire.

Nothing more terrifying than the phrase "Matt Walsh and Breitbart have supported this song".
For the record, I have listened to this song and gone through the lyrics and I don't think it's as bad or far right as TTIAST - I do think it's at least more authentic in trying to talk about the hardships of lower class workers but it's rather clumsy in its execution (and yeah the lines about obese people and Epstein feel odd considering and out of place). A shame because I honestly wish more songs went viral that talked about low minimum wages.
I won't lie though, the support from actual far right figures is sus. The support for the song actually reminds of the support that Sound of Freedom movie is getting: sort of a middling attempt at social commentary that just so happens to be supported by some of the worst people ever

I don't get the knocking of Vampire on here when people are cheering on songs that can't even crack the top 10 or instantly fall out of the top 10. Vampire is a smash.
