Correct me if I have this wrong, but I think they actually have the dates wrong. The chart week after November 30 (which would be December 7) will cover the tracking period of the 7 days before and including Thanksgiving (November 22-28), when during the past few years, neither AIWFCIS or RATCT were even close to #1. So unless there is another challenger, ABS will likely stay #1 until then, which would give it 20 weeks, beating the record.
Yeah but as I said, last year Thanksgiving was nearly as early as it could be (one day off) whereas this year it's as late as it can be. So, the question is whether Thanksgiving being late means a lot of people will start listening to holiday music later, or whether more people still start listening to holiday music before Thanksgiving this year because it's late. "AIWFCIY" is already threatening the top 20 on U.S. Spotify, is even higher on YouTube, and is probably higher at Amazon as well. I could easily see it being top 10 at some of those by next weekend and it (and "RATCT") battling for #1 around Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving falling a little later this year shouldn't make much of a difference, I don't think it ever has, and the difference is only 5 days anyway. It's usually more that people wait until right after Thanksgiving Day. The last years where Thanksgiving fell a little later and when AIWFCIS would eventually reach #1 were 2019 (Nov. 28th) and 2020 (Nov. 26th). During the weeks that ended those days, AIWFCIS, the highest-ranking Christmas song, was only #18 and #14, respectively. Yes, Christmas music has grown a lot since even then, but I just don't see it ever reaching #1 the week before Thanksgiving.

Billboard is shooting themselves in the foot with their methodology - ABS is going to break/tie OTR's record around the time that the YE list is released.
Were it the #1, both informations would get as much traffic, but given that it won't the information about it breaking the record will probably take away traffic from the chart's release - OTR itself is much more remembered for the record than being the YE-#1

I hope this week DWAS goes #1 and AIWFCIY is next. Tired of this Shaboozey joke

It took from an old rap song and the country vibe made it cool. It was something to groove to during the Summer. Now his team is working too hard to make it such an iconic song that it is becoming a hated song. It is overrated. Now many people want it to go away. Imo, he feels like an industry plant.

UGH - There's a Billboard Music Awards again this year?!? THIS is the reason for the recent insanely early Year End Cut-off dates. When are the Billboard Music Awards? I can’t find any info about them.

Billie's "WILDFLOWER" now up to #2 on US APPLE MUSIC, a new peak. "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is at #3.

Checking kworb, seems like pop is getting affected the most from radio switching to Christmas music, meanwhile Country is stable or gaining
Wonder why though. Is Country radio allergic to anything not "bro country"?

Is Country radio allergic to anything not "bro country"? If any stations are switching to Christmas music this early it's AC, which is why those songs are the ones seeing small decreases overall. We'll see larger effects post Thanksgiving because not many stations switch this early. Most other formats don't switch to full time Christmas at all, especially not Country.

That’s what everyone says about every song that spends an extended length of time at number one. It’s loved in the beginning and then gradually people turn on it and make up negative points about it. The ‘industry plant’ one is new to me though.

The song is just skating by at this point. Radio is a slow turnover and the song is something that is just a eh its on the radio I don't really feel like changing it. It's safe. It doesn't feel like a moment at all - at least not anymore. I don't know about "industry plant" but the song has felt dead for months yet is still #1. I don't see or hear anyone talking about it. If it wasn't for this forum and being a chart follower, I would have no idea it was even a thing anymore. It is quite bizarre overall for the success of the song still but the only thing that makes sense is that it is just one of those songs that has gotten stuck in a loop for all metrics and people do not feel like bothering to change it on the radio for example or a playlist, etc.

I can’t wait for the next few Pulse threads as we close out 2024, as we all gather together in spirit and unity, with joy in our hearts, complaining about how holiday songs clog the charts, while we festively argue about recurrent rules. Tis the season!

I get that you might expect there to be a big deal made over it approaching the record, except I honestly don’t believe the Hot 100 has as much relevance in general media as it once did, and because it’s not a pop girl involved, stan twitter don’t care either. But the song is clearly still a big deal as evidence by its continued numbers.

I don’t know why we’re defending the slow turnover of pop radio and Billboard having it really high in their formula when it’s a dying medium.

If radio’s ratings are dropping, it absolutely sound be counted less. I’m not sure how the formula has changed over the years but I assume radio’s weight has lessened in recent years to reflect the audience numbers?

I’m not sure how the formula has changed over the years but I assume radio’s weight has lessened in recent years to reflect the audience numbers? For reference, looking at last week's predictions, the songs in the top 20 averaged getting about 30% of their points from radio, and roughly 1-2% from sales, meaning streaming was more than 2/3rds of the points. (Shaboozey was on the higher end with 40% from radio.) Whether you think that's too much weight or not for radio, it's not like these long-running songs are getting awful streaming numbers, so it's not just radio propping them up.

A Bar Song -- 18 weeks at #1 actually ties the record for longest run at #1 with the same song credits Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus had 18 weeks at #1 Lil Nas X solo version was credited for the other week

I can't believe people are still focused on radio only - which counts less for the Hot 100 than ever - when many of us have pointed out that streaming has just as slow of turnover. "A Bar Song" is #5 in streaming and #2 in sales, so radio is not the only thing keeping the song high on the Hot 100.

Every person on this forum needs to remember that none of us are the typical music consumer. The majority of people like to hear familiar songs over and over. When radio plays the same songs for months on end it's because that's what their audience wants. We just aren't that audience. And as more people (outside of crazy music fans like us) embrace streaming we see songs lingering longer near the top. They don't consume as much music as we do and don't get as burnt out on ABS or Lose Control. And outside of that they are more than happy to hear the same Queen, MJ, Creedence, GnR and Fleetwood Mac songs on repeat.
It's incredibly boring for us, who look for what's new and fresh, but we aren't the majority.

Fun fact: tons of people like to listen to the same old sh!t over and over. Makes sense that streaming and radio numbers reflect that. EDIT: sorry renfield75 - I didn’t see your post until after I posted mine. Essentially the same point we were trying to make (although yours is a bit more eloquently worded than mine)

Essentially the same point we were trying to make (although yours is a bit more eloquently worded than mine) It’s kinda funny that so many people hold a grudge against radio for this while praising streaming, when the streaming charts are often just as stagnant for what sticks around in the top 20 or so. The only real difference is there are fleeting shake ups frequently with album/single bombs.

I can’t wait for A Bar song to get 20+ weeks at no.1 because the outrage here is just ridiculous. The song is top 5 on streaming and top 2 in sales. Acting like radio is the main metric fueling its success is down right delusional.

I listen to the radio. Sometimes I'm lazy af, and listening to the radio requires less movements of my hand, and only 1 finger. And I don't have to pick something up, like a phone, and then punch in a bunch of numbers to access said phone. If I can just move my hand one time and press one or two buttons with 1 finger to turn the radio on, I'm good. It's less complicated.

I adored radio back when I commuted. Ever since remote work, I almost never listen admittedly. But I for sure would if I worked in an office commute situation again. I will always be a fan of radio. Countless songs/artists I’ve discovered that way that I probably wouldn’t if left to my own streaming devices. Case and point: there are tons of songs in the current top 40 on CHR rn I’ve never heard, and I always knew almost every song that hit top 40 back when I listened to radio all the time. I also loathed the idea of always having to make my own choices for music on daily car rides. No freaking thank you, that gets tiring quickly.

What's great about this whole ABS thing is that it's coming close to tying and even beating "Old Town Road," which took over 20 years to beat the last record ("One Sweet Day"). I wonder if these types of records will be broken more often. I kinda want ABS to get 20 weeks at #1 now.

But I don’t listen to music nearly as much as I used to. And I’ve heard A Bar Song only a few times so when it comes on I crank it. Great song. I’m guessing that’s a lot of people just don’t listen to music as much as the majority here. However, as a chart geek, I get its annoying.

Espresso has been in the top 5 for a total of 24 weeks and still hasn't gone past #3, seems like it's lost its chance to go to #2, yet Taste isn't nearly as big yet did go to #2
