Kenny Chesney Goes To Heaven: By Way of Stadiums, Fans, Fun + New Music Kenny Chesney Goes To Heaven With 2nd Half of Poets & Pirates Underway, New Songs Arrives 8/10
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 07.24.08
Nashville: Everybody knows Kenny Chesney is the hardest working man in show business. Midway through his wildly successful Poets & Pirates 2008 Tour, though, any doubts should be allayed by the arrival of “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven,” a brand new song from the 4-consecutive Academy of Country Music and 3-time and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year.
With his Corona Extra-sponsored tour being #4 in any genre according to Pollstar - and the biggest tour in country music in spite of its late start, Kenny Chesney releases his first new music in over a year with the calypso-leaning “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven.” The Sunday August 10th release date may be unusual, but it follows the song's thematics.
“I think, you know, everything in that song is everything we all think,” Chesney admits with a laugh. “I don't know anyone who doesn't want to go to heaven, but nobody wants to go today. If you could pick, you wouldn't pick right now… you'd want to live, to do more things, to have more fun…
“And that's sort of the point of the song, too. It's one of those songs that says I'm not only not ready, I've got a little but more fun to have. It's certainly the way me and the people around me try to live, to pack as much as we can into every day… and it's the way I think our fans are living. You can tell when you get out in the parking lot, these are people who have come to have fun, to make a few memories with their friends… and I think that's a great way to live.”
Obviously, Chesney gets the most out of life. In addition to his own platinum-plus Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates, Chesney and co-producer Buddy Cannon helmed Willie Nelson's critically-acclaimed Moment of Forever and band member Tim Hensley's acoustic-bluegrass Long Monday - and he's been writing songs on the road, in the islands, on the shores of Mexico.
“Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” is a taste of what's to come. Having been in the recording studio with his usual crack session players, friends, band mates and myriad special guests, Chesney is putting final touches on an album he's calling “more personal than anything I've done yet.” Given the lead single's feel, it's quite possible the upcoming album will again have more of an ocean-grounding.
“I have been lucky to write with some of the best songwriters in the world… to play with some of the best musicians there are… to share stages with legends and friends,” Chesney says. “Sometimes if you take a moment, just pause and consider where you are, you want to capture that moment, to bring people inside. We're figuring out the best way to do that, because this is some of the very best music I've ever made.”
Look for Chesney to kick off his XM No Shoes Radio channel at noon, July 26th, with a live from the parking lot broadcast from Boston's Gillette Stadium, which Chesney sold out in less than 15 minutes for the fourth year in a row. With a big tour, a new single and a whole lotta fans, no wonder he's not quite ready to go…

Frogglyand.com has a (very short) clip of "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" (thanks to 1hotwheel of the CMT message board for finding this!). The website also says the album is titled "Lucky Old Sun," and it will be released on October 14th. It appears that "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" will be sent out to radio this Monday (7/28) since the Froggy website is saying they'll play the full-length version at that time. According to this USA Today article written by Brian Mansfield back in February, Kenny "initially worked with [Willie] Nelson after inviting him to record the Frankie Laine hit "That Lucky Old Sun" for a future Chesney project." Looks like that "future project" is Kenny's upcoming album. Judging by a Google search I just did, there used to be a video of Kenny and Willie singing "That Lucky Old Sun" on YouTube, but it's been removed. I'm hoping to hear "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" when I see Kenny in concert tomorrow (well, technically today) night, but I doubt if Kenny will play it since he doesn't like playing songs that the fans don't know. And now I'm rambling, so I'm going to go to bed to prepare for about 4 hours of tailgating and 7 hours of live music. :)

Thanks for the link. Guess it's back to the Jimmy Buffett-style songs...unfortunately.

I think T10 is asking a little bit much. I'm gonna say it'll debut at #16. There's a pretty big gap right now between Darius and Julianne, so my guess is he'll end up in there.

Hopefully we'll get some poster reviews of it shortly, if it's any good, or if it makes everybody want to go heaving...

Lyrics:
Preacher told me last Sunday mornin’ Son, you better start livin’ right You need to quit the women and whiskey And carrying on all night
Don’t you wanna hear him call your name When you’re standin’ at the pearly gates I told the preacher, “Yes I do” But I hope they don’t call today I ain’t ready
Everybody wants to go to heaven Have a mansion high above the clouds Everybody want to go to heaven But nobody want to go now
Said preacher maybe you didn’t see me Throw an extra twenty in the plate There’s one for everything I did last night And one to get me through today Here’s a ten to help you remember Next time you got the good Lord’s ear Say I’m comin’ but there ain’t no hurry I’m havin’ fun down here Don’t you know that
Everybody wants to go to heaven Get their wings and fly around Everybody want to go to heaven But nobody want to go now
Someday I want to see those streets of gold in my halo But I wouldn’t mind waitin’ at least a hundred years or so
Everybody wanna go to heaven It beats the other place there ain’t no doubt Everybody wanna go to heaven But nobody wanna go now
Everybody wanna go to heaven Hallelujah, let me hear you shout Everybody wanna go to heaven But nobody wanna go now I think I speak for the crowd Nobody wanna go now, yeah

You need to quick the women and whiskey quick them ? yeah baby !! Whoops. Fixed. As for the debut of this song, I don't think there's any way it will debut in the top 10. It would need to accumulate about 3 million AIs every day, and I don't see that happening. I'm guessing it will debut at #23.

I don't much care for this lyrically or sonically. Kind of a letdown after his last cd.

I really like Kenny, and usually don't mind his island-feel songs, but that clip was mediocre at best. I haven't a clue why a song about a man talking to a preacher would be recorded with beach music. The lyrics weren't the problem, they just didn't seem to match the music.

Those aren't beach type lyrics. What's up with that music!? ???

I don't care for the clip or this particular Kenny style, but I don't think it's a misfit for the lyrics. Adding the calypso feel to the song brings out the whimsy and the slacker feel in the lyrics (for example, in these lines: "Said preacher maybe you didn’t see me/Throw an extra twenty in the plate/There’s one for everything I did last night/And one to get me through today"). I think it's a credible interpretation, especially coming from a guy who hasn't settled down into the family life and is still living it up in his live shows and whatnot.
But I'm now curious to hear George Strait's version, which would probably feel very different coming from a man who has more of that reflective "lived a long life's journey" feel to some of his songs. Or maybe he went for a wry interpretation, too.

DEVELOPING: Strait to release Chesney singleCountry On-Demand has learned that George Strait is planning to release to digital outlets his version of "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven." The song was released just today as Kenny Chesney's debut single from his upcoming album, due in October. Strait's version is expected to hit digital outlets on August 5. No word from UMG Nashville, Strait's label, on whether the song will also be pitched to country radio. Strait's current single there is the title track to his latest album, "Troubadour." STAY TUNED . . . . --COUNTRY ON-DEMAND

I had the opposite reaction of a lot of posters here -- based on the title and some of the quotes, I wasn't optimistic. But I heard the full song today, and I really liked it. Very fun song with a good beat, and also some depth to it. Not at all preachy like I feared.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the whole "Shiftwork" debacle... Edit: Or maybe even the "Every Other Weekend" situation. But here's what I don't understand....Kenny, George and Reba are not exactly lightweights at their respective labels. If the Strait version does get released, I gotta think that the artists would step in. It's one thing for a label not to cooperate with a single release because they have a competing single (EOW) but to release a single that the other artist has released is just going too far. (Or BNA letting Kenny record and release a single that Strait had just recorded is also going too far.)
