Kenny was on Leno last night. I think you can tell that he auto-tunes his records, because I felt like he was rough last night with this song. The vocals just weren't smooth and it seemed he had a hard time hitting some of the upper register. Maybe he's just worn out vocally, I don't know.. but in my opinion, he definitely wasn't on last night.

So HDD has his sales at 177K and Billy C's at 27K. Wow, are these numbers so low because of the economy and declining CD sales in general? Looking at the Hits numbers from these 2 artists' previous releases, Kenny sold 387K and Billy 54K. Both more than a 50% decrease. Wow! I guess I am just wondering because Sugarland still managed to have an awesome debut. I forget the exact number, but I think it was over 300K and that was an increase over their last 2 CDs. Granted, that was back in July. I am just trying to understand what is really driving this trend.

maybe people were waiting for this weeks non-deluxe edition....then add the #'s together when they come in for the 2nd cd as well.
+ i would say this is his weakest 1st single in awhile which doesnt help.

The percentage drop that Sugarland had, from "1st week/deluxe only", to "2nd week/regular+deluxe", was a 45%. So using that same factor, would lead Kenny to a 96K sales performance. Still not bad, and he's certainly not hurting for cash, but maybe the days of him easily getting multi-platinum albums is coming to an end. You had:
All I Need To Know - gold Me And You & I Will Stand - platinum Everywhere We Go - double platinum No Shoes, etc & When The Sun - 4X platinum Road And The Radio - 3X platinum Poets & Pirates - Platinum, with 1.4 mill sold
So it does show a usual "bell curve", with his high point for sales being from '02 to '04, and him now on the decline. But that "decline" will probably just stretch out for the next four or five albums, with them still moving over a mill. And I think Kenny still has about ten more #1 songs left in him.

Given the Sugarland example, I don't think fans waiting for the regular edition was a significant factor. I think the biggest factor may simply be the turnaround time between albums -- Poets & Pirates was released in mid-September of last year, so it has only been thirteen months and Kenny already has a new album. Poets & Pirates also had two singles heavily showcased by the time it was released ("Never Wanted Nothing More" shot up the charts and was a multi-week #1 and then "Don't Blink" was either top-10 or close by the time the album was released), whereas this album had just "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven." I agree with dcowboy77 that it isn't exactly Kenny's strongest track.
I think it was in a Tennessean article a couple of years ago in which artist manager Jeff Rabhan suggested that albums would increasingly become marketing devices for tours. That would certainly make sense for someone like Kenny, whose tour income dwarfs whatever money he makes off his album sales. On the other hand, the material on this album doesn't quite fit the typical party atmosphere of Kenny's concerts, outside of this song and "Ten with a Two."
I'm surprised that BNA hasn't announced a second single now that this song is fading. And it looks like Kenny won't be performing that second single at the CMAs, either, since he will be joined by The Wailers.

I'm very interested in seeing what the follow up to this will be, because I don't think there is another sure-fire hit on the album. Ten With a Two and Down This Road are the likely candidates, but TWAT is this album's Shiftwork (nice idea, but not that good of a song) and DTR is plagued by extremely bland production, so I don't think either would be a surefire #1. The Life is probably my favorite song on the album, but I don't look for it to be a single. I'm really wondering if this album isn't just a bridge to a GH2. I would be surprised if this album goes more than 3 songs deep.
BTW, I think the deluxe/standard may have hurt Kenny a bit more than it did Sugarland, because Kenny's bonus tracks were merely live versions of previously recorded songs, whereas Sugarland's featured otherwise unavailable songs. Either way his first week sales were quite low, this album could struggle to even go platinum.

And both of those songs are covers, too. I would be really surprised to see the highly underrated Mac McAnally finally get another top 40 hit, even if it's a bland cover of a song that Mac himself hit #70 with in 1990.

Then I'm at a loss for what the 3rd single would be. I'm Alive I guess, but that's a pretty underwhelming single choice.

I really think "Down The Road" should be the second single. To me, it's the standout track on the album, and it's also the most country (although that probably doesn't matter). Unlike kw9461, I don't think the production on the song is bland. It certainly has a more acoustic sound to it, but I think that fits the song well. It might not be an automatic #1, but I think it would be a top 3 for sure. For the third single, I'd go with "Way Down Here." I think it's a well-written song (I especially like the chorus), and I can hear Kenny's emotions in his vocals. I don't see this album going more than three singles deep. As I speculated in the Upcoming Album Releases thread, I think we'll see a Greatest Hits 2 from Kenny next fall; he's certainly due for one.

I hope you're right about DTR, because I do really like that song, and Mac Mcanally sounds great on it. I think the acoustic feel is fitting, but I would like to hear a little more on the chorus. Way Down Here wouldn't be bad either, because as you said the lyrics are strong and seem very personal to Kenny. The music is so relaxing that it almost put me to sleep, so it took a second listen to get a better grasp on the song.

I like this album a fair bit, even if it is a continuation of Be As You Are. Given the lack of potential singles from this album, I'm surprised they didn't go with a couple more from the last album. Radio seems to like "Got A Little Crazy" and I think "Just Not Today" was also a big hit waiting to happen. Since there isn't much on this CD that would work as well as those two, I'm surprised they rushed a new album out.
As far as the next single goes, I'm not sure what I want. "Way Down Here" and "Down The Road" seem like the most obvious single choices (though I'm really not sure how radio friendly the latter is). I also wouldn't be totally surprised if they put out "I'm Alive" (especially since it's also the best digital seller). I would expect a single announcement any day now, since "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" is on its way down.

Dropped off after 16 weeks? WTF? Gee, why don't they just make a top 10 chart and skip the rest....cut cut cut cut cut. I hate it how songs have dropped off from #3, 4, 5 etc since they changed the rules. A top 10 song should be allowed to go down the chart at least part of the way, not from it's peak. It's just going to be a matter of time when a #1 drops off from #1. I wrote to BB too, my subscription is up for renewal, and I'm debating on renewing it too. Partly due to $, partly due to content not being as good as it was in the past. Would like to have just online access, but they don't offer just online.

For a #1 song to drop off the charts after 16 weeks on the charts isn't anything to be upset about; 'Ain't Nothin' About You' was #1 for the year in 2001 @ R&R despite a mere 14 weeks on the charts.
It loosens up the charts and allows for more movement on the charts, and especially for newcomers, although Mediabase's absurdly low requirement that their reporters only have to have 25% of their music is current is a major reason why the charts are so slow.
It happened all the time throughout the eighties and a large chunk of the nineties.
