According to the Real Time Tracker, this has already picked up 2.335 million AIs. That's more than I thought it would have at this point.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the whole "Shiftwork" debacle... Edit: Or maybe even the "Every Other Weekend" situation. But here's what I don't understand....Kenny, George and Reba are not exactly lightweights at their respective labels. If the Strait version does get released, I gotta think that the artists would step in. It's one thing for a label not to cooperate with a single release because they have a competing single (EOW) but to release a single that the other artist has released is just going too far. (Or BNA letting Kenny record and release a single that Strait had just recorded is also going too far.) I agree. It makes absolutely no sense for Kenny and George to have the same song on the charts at the same time.

It makes absolutely no sense for Kenny and George to have the same song on the charts at the same time. I'm guessing that if the George version does chart, it will be just from a few scattered stations, probably in Texas, and would at best maybe just crack the top 50, if that much. I doubt the label wants to do anything that would distract too much from Troubadour, which might be able to make the top ten next week, and at least appears headed for a top five finish. As long as there's no distraction, I'm always for another charting song for George, to further push him up that Joel Whitburn's Top Artists list that I've been continuing to track. As for Kenny, strange choices with the single's music. You have to assume that he's headed smooth sailing to his 15th career #1, but he might not be making it easy on himself.

George may have cut the song but I doubt it will ever be released... It was not put on his latest album and I doubt we'll get another album before next Fall or later.... So I don't see how it would ever be released as a single. I wish I could hear George's version...I bet it sounds great..

I'm guessing it will debut at #23. With it now appearing on the Mediabase chart with 3.5 mill after two days, I think that debut prediction looks pretty good. Assume it will reach 12 mill or so on Mediabase, and thus 10.5 to 11 mill on Billboard. That would put it right around the #21 to #25 range. I heard the song on the radio for the first time this morning and, reggae music or not, it'll be a slam dunk #1, Kenny's 15th. I'm guessing George went with a slightly different musical arrangement, and that would be cool to hear them both, to compare and contrast. Unfortunately, once George's is released to "digital outlets", we won't be able to see if it actually gets close to charting on Billboard (from scattered radio airplay, of course), only the top 50 being shown on Mediabase.

I really like the lyrics and think Kenny sings it pretty well but the reggae/beachy music has got to go!

R&R lists the label promoting this as Blue Chair/BNA. I assume that means Kenny has become the latest to create his own label, eh?...

Oh boy, his own label now? I see his own brand of cologne in the near future and perhaps a bag of chips too ;)

Have not listened to the song and don't care to after reading the lyrics. Horrible song!
Also, why in the world is George Strait recording and possibly releasing this song? That makes no sense to me. However, this is country and anything and everything goes now days. This genre is very slowly (but surely) being slaughtered.

But I agree that the arrangements are very similar. I think the reggae feel might be a little more subtle in George's version but it's certainly still there. I think the song fits better with Kenny but I'd just as soon that neither recorded it.

I like this. The island beat is a little different but it seems to work for me. And of course, whether it's George or Kenny, they both flatten the hell out of their voices in the studio...

the music and the lyrics do not fit. that is my main problem with the song. i hate the music so much, that it ruins the song.

Kenny is set to record his own version of "Troubadour" for his new album. Should be interesting...

Kenny is set to record his own version of "Troubadour" for his new album. Should be interesting... Only he'd have to rewrite the lyrics: Sometimes I feel like Jimmy B. Still trying to be lazy A poet and a pirate, that's who I am I was a young troubadour when I rode in on the waves I'll be an old troubadour just the same

Thanks very much! I'm surprised that George's version appears to have a very similar feel to Kenny's. But I prefer George's vocal in the clip. Kenny's gets flattened out in studio to the point that it doesn't have any character. I know I've said this repeatedly about Kenny's studio recordings, but it really does leave the impression that he is doing nothing more than singing the notes in the same monotonous way, without any regard for the lyric. I know he is capable of better, because his performance of "Demons" on Poets & Pirates shows that he is. You know, the first time I heard "I Saw God Today," I thought it could easily have been a Kenny Chesney song. It's weird thinking of Kenny Chesney and George Strait choosing from the same pool of songs, though. I can't help but think that both reflects and contributes to increased homogeneity on country radio. To me, this is what makes the vocal performance all the more important -- something that might make the material more distinctive and individual.

Whats with the whole Shiftwork /Kenny George thing? I saw someone mention it a page back but I didn't go in the Shiftwork thread enough to know anything behind the scenes.
I hate the way he tries to make all his music sound like it's from Hawaii. I thought he was passed this attempt.

Wow, Family Guy in the avatar and BB10 in the signature...I think we could be best friends. haha I heard this on the radio yesterday...I liked it pretty well but I agree with everyone on the whole beach music thing. I think it would have been just as well with country music behind it.
