April 14th, and before anyone asks, no, I don't know if it's going to have an add at Alternative, but DMB used to be an Alternative type band so it must get some spins somewhere, shouldn't it? At least I hope so. It's really unfair that bands like DMB no longer get any alternative love, for no reason really. Anyway, this is the first single from Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King, which comes out June 2nd. Discuss.

It's really unfair that bands like DMB no longer get any alternative love, for no reason really.. I disagree on the for no reason part. At least for some of these bands. In the case of DMB, their last album was way more pop-oriented than any of their other albums. Bands like Live, Better Than Ezra, and Lifehouse do better at Hot AC not only because the formats have changed, but also because so have they. You don't hear Live doing anything like "Lakini's Juice" anymore, or DMB doing anything dark like "Don't Drink The Water," or Lifehouse doing anything as alt-rock oriented as anything off their first two albums anymore. For bands like Matchbox 20, I agree it's more that the format has changed to exclude them rather than them changing a whole lot.

Judging by all the soft rock ballads that get major airplay on alternative nowadays, I just don't agree with what you're saying.

Both Live and DMB's biggest hits ("Lightning Crashes" and "Crash Into Me", respectively), are the soft rock ballads that I still hear on Alternative anytime I'm listening. Yeah, they're both finished on this format--both bands I should say--yet Pearl Jam was just able to hit #1 with a recycled, old B-side.
What a difference an aura of pioneership can do for a band.
As for The DMB, like most people seem to be, I'm far more interested at this point in watching them live for the first time in ten years, playing the hits and favorites that I grew up with, than I am in hearing new material that's probably gonna end up exclusive to Triple-A anyway. Their calling card is nostalgia now.
R.I.P. LeRoi Moore. :(.

I'm an unabashed NON DMB fan. There isn't one song that I've heard that I've liked past three listens. I don't know why. I feel like I should like some of the stuff but I have zero connection at all to any of it.

I think it depends on your definition of pop ballads, but they're more alt-sounding at least than songs like Live's "The River" or Lifehouse's "You And Me," or DMB's "American Baby," all of which were lead singles on the first albums to fail to chart at alternative. Name a lead single from a major current alternative act that is as un-alternative as these.

I don't want to, because I don't want to get into a discussion about what alternative is, so I will just say I am sorry I brought it up, and let us just forget the whole thing. I will do anything to avoid another discussion about what alternative is.

Fair enough. I'm just gonna argue that regardless of what alternative is...if these bands didn't mellow out as they got older (which there is nothing wrong with, no point in forcing angst if it ain't there), they would still be doing well at alternative.

I can't go quite that far as I like "Ants Marching" and "I Did It" and, to some degree, "Where Are You Going" and "Every Day," but for the most part I agree. Their fans seem to be very passionate, so I've no doubt they're doing what they do very well, but it usually just doesn't connect with me.

It feel like I should like them because I like a lot of other bands similar to them, but I guess DMB just never connected with me either. It's weird.

I hope you don't mind if I say that you blow. lol I bought Under the Table and Dreaming in '95, didn't get around to buying Crash until 3 years after it came out. Didn't get around to burning off a copy of Before These Crowded Streets until 2002, and have just collected their singles since. It should go without saying that even collecting the singles is more of an afterthought nowadays. The one time I saw them live 10 years ago, I was on the phone for 45 minutes and wound up with lawn tickets, it rained part of the time, and I realized that their fanbase had become way more obnoxious twirling yuppies and the adult pop audience than Alternative radio listeners like me. Plus they jammed out their songs so much that my eyes and ears soon tended to glaze over until they brought them back to the familiar realm. So that was my first and last DMB concert. And I was about to publicly ask (like I did when I first heard the album title) what the f**k is (a) Groogrux, but I looked it up on Wikipedia and it apparently was a nickname of LeRoi's. :'( Good thing I didn't just brazenly ask it.

(Although admittedly, the Hip's newest song is great)

I am actually a huge DMB fan (they don't really fit in well with the rest of my collection, with the exception of John Mayer maybe). I just fell in love with their individual talents as musicians and their cohesion as a band. I will miss LeRoi's contributions but at least he is on Groogrux and I can always listen to their older stuff. Their live CDs are great. I actually enjoy their jams on familiar songs.

Definitely not backing Pipa on his Tragically Hip assessment....as they are one of my faves of all time. But I believe in your right to dislike, so march on brave soldier. I'll also make a bet with you that once you enter your 20's you'll find the catalogue of the Hip a little more enjoyable. I honestly grew up with it and I didn't really like them til I was 21

Similar to DMB I think I only like John Mayer. I can't say I know all DMB stuff though, I know the singles and that is enough to say I don't like them. There's only one song I enjoy a bit and it's "The Space Between". The words I said could be used in the exact same way if we were discussing Counting Crows' music.

You're breaking my heart Fran. First DMB, now Counting Crows? Next you're going to tell me you don't like Third Eye Blind either.

I thought it spent a week at #50. Maybe that was on Pop, I don't know. It falls in that area in which I don't have the chart records.

I'll admit I was being a little too harsh, because I like "American Baby" and the singles off the album with "I Did It" that weren't "I Did It". ...Which is still more songs than I like by the Hip.
