04. "Love At First Sight" from Fever (2001)lmao totally forgot about this. Anyway hi, at number four on my list is the third single from Fever, released in mid-2002. This dance-pop jam, co-written by Kylie, is literally the perfect feel-good song. Lyrically, the song describes the emotions one goes through during the early stages of love, and the bubbly upbeat disco groove dares you not to move. This is literally Kylie at her best. The music video is pretty cute, featuring some 'futuristic' visual effects and android backup dancers. It's pretty clear they were trying to replicate the iconic "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" here. It's obviously not as good, but it's nice. American listeners might recognize the Ruff & Jam mix, which was released as the U.S. radio edit. I like that version but I definitely prefer the original. Remember when Kylie's management sent her over to the States for a weeklong pity promo tour to promote this? lmao. Carson Daly, Jay Leno, and MTV's TRL were all blessed by her presence. Song of the summer 2002 <3

Chart Exta: "Too Far" from Impossible Princess (1997)Haha, I bet you thought this was going to be "Confide In Me". I decided to feature the opening track from Impossible Princess as the final (probably) chart extra. While Kylie co-wrote ten of the twelve tracks on the album, this is one of two she wrote alone (the other being the equally amazing "Say Hey"). "Too Far" is a chaotic drum and bass tune, shifting tempos like nobody's business, occasionally backed by piano, sometimes by strings, and it all builds up to this anti-climax of sorts – a wailing high note from Kylie. But wait! I'm getting ahead of myself. The song describes being caught up in a sense of helplessness and despair amongst chaotic surroundings, a sort of 'going with the flow' all the while knowing you're f**king up. I guess a case can be made for this song being about drug addiction (" too many, too much, too hard"), but aside from that lyric, I don't really get that vibe at all. This song really seems to be written from a depressed state of mind, struggling to break free, imo. This is especially evident in the verse following the first chorus: Can I smash all of this open? Can I pass the hurt with a little pain? I want to see all of it crumble, And start afresh and over again. My eyes are wide open, But I can hardly see. Will laughter find a way around these silent tears? Having established this, after like a million " too fa-ah-ar"s, we arrive at this climax of Kylie's high note, which (in my interpretation of the song) acts as her expelling all of these negative emotions. This is followed by sighs and aaahs, a coming up for air after the emotional exhaustion just experienced. The song ends on an uptempo, slightly more uplifting chorus that sort of gives you hope that she's not lost after all. ^____^ This song became a fan favourite upon the album release, with many pushing for a single release for the track. While this never came to fruition, "Too Far" was remixed by Brothers In Rhythm and Junior Vasquez, and issued as a promo single to clubs. I first discovered this song after Kylie performed it on her 2006 Showgirl Homecoming tour. I was literally blown away.m4a; how was I not aware of this incredible song's existence before??? Anyway, it's a great performance of this song, undoubtedly full of new meaning after her battle with breast cancer. Bless her for putting on this huge, emotionally and physically draining show so soon after her recovery. I've written far too much, so let me end this now. The countdown shall resume "shortly" with number three coming up "soon". I'll be here every day, so. xx

03. "Better The Devil You Know" from Rhythm Of Love (1990)I'll be here every day, so. This is the song that made Kylie cool – the first single from Kylie's third album that introduced the world to a more mature, sexy Kylie. Previously known for her role on Australian soap opera Neighbours and cheesy girl-next-door pop, this dance-pop song written and produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman was the birth of the Kylie Minogue, superstar we all love. Released in mid-1990, six months before its parent album, the song was born out of early recording sessions from Rhythm Of Love. Initially written by SAW after learning that Kylie had broken up with fellow SAW recording artist and Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan, to date INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. Seeing potential drama ahead, the song developed from the idea that 'it's better the devil you know than the devil you don't.' After recording in London, the song was rush-released to introduce the public to Kylie's new image, which later singles from Rhythm Of Love would build upon. Featuring club-oriented production and more confident vocals from Kylie, the song naturally required an equally monumental video. With her colored love interest, bared skin, slightly provocative dance moves and that come-hither look, the video made a splash as the birth of a real pop princess. Quite rightly regarded today as a pop music masterpiece, "Better The Devil You Know" set the standard for DanceKylie and is one of her most beloved songs. Obviously it's one of my personal favourites as well, but two other songs that also marked new Kylie incarnations and left even bigger impressions, take the top two spots on my list. "Kids" and "It's No Secret" are up next. Until next time, keep fit and have fun.

How appropriate: you and Jesse both put the songs I wanted to top your respective charts at #3.
But I've seriously been enjoying this and look forward to seeing what two songs are still to come!

02. "Confide In Me" from Kylie Minogue (1994)The lead single from Kylie's indie debut was released in mid-1994, marking the emergence of a mature, self-aware artist who uses her full name. "Confide In Me" is a lush ballad driven by strings and a drum beat – influence from many genres is evident, including R&B, downtempo and Middle Eastern pop. Written and produced by Brothers In Rhythm, who first worked with Kylie when they remixed 1992's "Finer Feelings" for single release, this song was praised by critics as one of her best singles ever – and rightly so. Lyrically, the song paints Kylie as a friend willing to lend an ear, to listen and understand. "We all get hurt by love, and we all have our cross to bear. But in the name of understanding now, our problems should be shared." The music video runs with this concept, serving as an advertisement for a Kylie help line. (1-555-CONFIDE!) With those colourful backgrounds and kitschy paraphernalia, it is eerily reminiscent of an early SAW-era video. "Hand On Your Heart", maybe. Either way, it's nice on its own merits, but aside from the literal use of the lyrics, I don't think it's the best interpretation of the song – I'd have envisioned a darker, more introspective video à la "Where Is The Feeling". This song peaked #1 in Australia and #2 in the UK, and was a moderate hit elsewhere, making this Kylie's biggest Deconstruction-era single. This was even earmarked for a North American push, with American promo vinyls issued and a French version recorded that was used as a bonus track on the Canadian edition of the album (that I want solely for the perfect cover art). Anyway, the promo records, which featured an impeccable set of remixes (including the amazing Big Brothers mix and Philip Damien Confession mix), were enough to land a #39 peak on the U.S. dance chart. Promotion then promptly ceased, as the American label, Imago, went bankrupt. Oops! Nevertheless, this is one of Kylie's most enduring hits; covered by multiple artists and performed on all but one of Kylie's tours since its release. Speaking of tours, let's get into this awesome performance from her 2009 Toronto concert (I was there!! <3) and her show-stopping rendition from the Aphrodite: Les Folies tour. Any way you slice it, this is perfection – a classic that stands above nearly all the rest.

Afraid? Jealous?
I might not be such a huge fan of its video but "Confide in Me" is undoubtedly my favorite of Kylie's singles.

01. "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" from Fever (2001)Like, duh. The Greatest Song Of All Time™, a cultural phenomenon, record-breaking worldwide smash, most-played song of the 2000s; whatever you want to call it, this is undoubtedly the song that Kylie Minogue will forever be associated with. Nothing else she's recorded before or since has left its mark on popular culture in quite this way. Undeniably her signature song – even Kylie agrees, "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" (or CGYOOMH for 'short') is pop music at its finest. I'm sure this song needs no introduction – everyone's already been infected by those la la las, the throbbing bass line and hypnotic synth melody. Written and produced by Cathy Dennis & Rob Davis (God bless), this song was originally offered to S Club 7 and Sophie Ellis-Bextor before it ended up in the hands of its rightful caretaker. I'll let Kylie take it from here: "My A&R at the time, Miles Leonard and Jamie Nelson, said, 'We've got something. Come into the office. We've got to play you something.' So I went to the EMI office, and ... about 20 seconds in, I couldn't even fathom what I was hearing. It just... did something. I was beside myself. Then at the end of the song, panic set in. I was saying 'Are you sure we've got this song? Don't tell me that we don't! Is it secured? Can we have it?' And we did! And that kick-started a whole different phase in my career." So after laying down her vocals and making the song even more amazing, Kylie premiered the song on her On A Night Like This tour in March 2001 (featuring some noise for the man giving us bass, Chris Brown). Aside from the hideous outfit, the whole thing went down pretty well, although not quite spectacularly. Little did the world know of the beast that was to be unleashed a few months later... The finishing touches were put on the song, it was released to radio stations around the world in mid-2001, and the slayage began. The world began to grasp the amazingness of this song. The music video, directed by Dawn Shadforth, is similarly amazing. Taking us back to the future with a 1960s take on an android-populated futuristic city, Kylie appears in four scenes: first, she looks sexy while driving a sports car into the city (ugh I love that sequence from 0:30 to 0:37); then we see her looking somewhat paler, dancing in a tracksuit alongside some ladies sporting some questionable fur on their chests; thirdly, we get to the most iconic part of the whole thing, that hooded dress(!) which left almost nothing to the imagination (also love that shot at 2:18, BOW) and the robotic dancers; and finally, Kylie dances on a rooftop in that short silver dress, looking slightly confused. The whole thing is well good, isn't it? September rolled around, and Kylie was set to release the physical single. The UK press hyped up a 'chart battle' with Victoria Beckham, who was releasing her first solo single on the same day. There's not much to say here, except: The chart battle between Kylie Minogue and Victoria Beckham is turning into a walkover, according to midweek sales figures. Beckham's first solo release "Not Such An Innocent Girl" sold just 9,274 copies on the first day of release, while Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" sold 77,174. (BBC) "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" debuted at #1 in the UK and remained there for four weeks, a feat which the song also accomplished in Australia. This success was replicated around the world, with #1 peaks in over forty countries and a mind-blowing sixteen weeks at #1 on the European Hot 100. Naturally, the song migrated to snatch North American wigs (by way of pop stations in Montreal), conquering Canada in late 2001 (this was the first Kylie song I ever heard!) and the United States in early 2002. She even found her way over to pack a tiny bit of promo into her already crammed schedule, namely Saturday Night Live. Anyway, I'm getting tired of writing so let me wrap this up: simply put, this is one of the best pop songs to ever grace our ears. Pitchfork, Stylus, The Telegraph, Slant and NME all agree. Whether it's dramatically string-driven for The Abbey Road Sessions, remixed by Greg Kurstin for 2007's The Kylie Show, a very chilled version for Radio 2, or mashed up with New Order's "Blue Monday" for the Brit Awards, this song is a f**king TUNE. Let us enjoy Miss Minogue's most iconic performance ever: " How does it feel?" xx
